    Finding
Asbestos personal-injury complaint (Hawaii First Circuit Court, filed 10 Dec 2020; removed to D. Haw. by Crane Co. on 28 Jan 2021) alleges that plaintiff Philip T. Solatorio 'tended and worked on boilers and other equipment while in the U.S. Navy from approximately 1956 to 1962' and 'worked in and on ships, including USS Kawishiwi (AO-146) and USS Cacapon (AO-52), where the said asbestos products were being used.' The products alleged are Crane Co. steam, gate, globe and check valves and Cochrane deaerating tanks, which the complaint says 'contained asbestos insulation, asbestos gaskets and/or asbestos packing.' Crane Co.'s notice of removal restates the allegation (Kawishiwi and Cacapon, about 1956-1962) to support a federal-officer/government-contractor defense.

    U.S. Navy enlisted, boiler/equipment work (plaintiff's allegation), c. 1956-1962
    Limitations
PLEADING-STAGE ALLEGATION ONLY. What is verified is that the court record exists and names this hull; the exposure itself was never adjudicated. The docket closed 10 May 2022, after a consolidated mediation was ordered; the text of the closing entry is not on RECAP, so the disposition is unknown (no finding for or against). The allegation does not establish that asbestos-containing Crane valves were aboard this hull, any individual exposure, causation, or quantity. The alleged exposure window (1956-1962) is the plaintiff's approximation.

    Finding
Federal district court order ruling on Daubert and summary-judgment motions in an asbestos mesothelioma action. The court's background section recites that plaintiff Michael R. Marcus 'served ... as a boiler technician and boiler repairman aboard the USS Kawishiwi from September 1966 to December 1969' (citing his deposition, Dkt. No. 435-2). Defendant Cleaver-Brooks argued its boilers were not aboard his named ships, asserting that 'the propulsion boilers installed in the USS Hancock and USS Kawishiwi were manufactured by Babcock & Wilcox Company.' The court denied Cleaver-Brooks summary judgment on that ground because Marcus served on more ships than the five he named. It did not find which boilers or asbestos products were aboard Kawishiwi. The docket later shows settlements with Eaton (4 Sep 2024) and Foster Wheeler Energy (10 Sep 2024) before the 9 Sep 2024 trial date, and CourtListener metadata shows the case terminated on 13 Sep 2024.

U.S. Navy boiler technician/boiler repairman aboard this hull, Sep 1966-Dec 1969 (deposition as recited by the court)
    Limitations
DISCOVERY-RECORD STAGE, the most developed Kawishiwi litigation found, but still not a finding. The court's recitation of shipboard service is background drawn from deposition testimony, not a factual finding. The Babcock & Wilcox boiler attribution is a defendant's litigation assertion, not a court finding and not verified against DANFS or NVR, so it is NOT carried into propulsion_summary. Denial of summary judgment means only that a genuine dispute remained; the pretrial settlements are not findings of exposure. Does not establish asbestos aboard this hull, the quantity, or causation.

    Finding
Asbestos wrongful-death/survival complaint (Spilmon v. General Electric Co.), attached to MDL-875 tag-along notices, lists among the decedent Marion Spilmon's exposure locations 'KAWISHIWI (AO-146)'. It gives his job title aboard as Chief Petty Officer, Machinist Mate/Master Chief, for 4/1960-1/1966, within U.S. Navy machinist mate service of 3/1/1950-9/30/1969. It also lists Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Naval Repair Facility Subic Bay, and ports in Vietnam and the Philippines. Both N.D. Cal. removals (4:11-cv-05256, removed by GE; 3:11-cv-05289, noticed by Huntington Ingalls) were transferred to MDL-875 in E.D. Pa. (orders of 17 Nov 2011 and 17 Apr 2012).

    Finding
Two further MDL-875 tag-along complaints list KAWISHIWI (AO-146) among many vessels in their exposure-location exhibits. (a) Nash v. Huntington Ingalls Inc. (N.D. Cal. 3:11-cv-05356-EMC; wrongful-death action by the Nash family): the vessel appears in a list of ships worked as a shipfitter for Triple A Machine Shop, Inc. (Richmond, CA; Pier 64, San Francisco), with period entries of 6/1969-9/5/1969 and 1972-1984 (off and on). (b) Dizon v. General Electric Co. (N.D. Cal. 4:10-cv-05968-PJH; wrongful death of Nellia Dizon): the vessel appears in a list of ships under employer 'US Navy (cont'd.)' and location 'Naval Repair Facility Subic Bay, Philippines', job title Electrician, with listed exposure dates in the range 2/3/1957-7/1977.

    Limitations
PLEADING-STAGE ALLEGATIONS; the vessel is one entry in long ship lists. Marked 'partial' because the OCR'd exhibit tables do not reliably line up each vessel with its date row, so the specific dates for Kawishiwi cannot be read with confidence. E.D. Pa. MDL dockets exist (Nash 2:11-cv-67777, terminated 26 Jul 2012; Dizon 2:11-cv-60069, terminated 27 Mar 2013), but dispositions were not retrieved. A court-approved Exhibit A to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet (SBRF) consent decree, 'SBRF Non-Retention Vessel Coating Condition Summary', lists KAWISHIWI (No. 35) as a Non-retention vessel at SBRF with coating condition 3. The exhibit defines condition 3 as: 'Minor coating degradation exists where rust is beginning to bleed through coatings at cracks and chips, and less than 5% of coatings has potential for exfoliation.' The Arc Ecology/SF Baykeeper/NRDC suit (California Regional Water Quality Control Board intervening) concerned discharge of deteriorating hull and topside coatings from the SBRF reserve ships.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record other than litigation allegations was located. No Navy or MARAD asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazardous-materials inventory, or disposal-contract hazmat disclosure naming this hull was found in the sources searched. The MARAD ShipHistory record has no hazmat content. The MARAD FY2014 Office of Ship Disposal annual report (which reportedly covers this sale) was blocked by the network egress proxy. No CourtListener opinion (as distinct from RECAP pleadings) names the hull in an asbestos case: the opinion index for 'Kawishiwi' returned only Minnesota river/Boundary Waters and trust-name collisions, and the hull-number query returned none.

Not locating a public survey or abatement record does not prove that no asbestos-containing material was aboard. Several key official sources (NHHC DANFS, NVR, the MARAD disposal report) were unreachable this session, so this negative finding is provisional. It neither establishes nor defeats any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

Correction: MARAD ShipHistory lists this vessel's type as 'LNG Liquefied Natural Gas Tanker'. That is inconsistent with the vessel's AO/T-AO designation (fleet oiler) carried in the same MARAD record title, and with every court record naming the hull, which calls her 'USS Kawishiwi (AO-146)' (Solatorio, Spilmon, Ramsey, Nash, Dizon) or 'USS Kawishiwi' in Navy service 1966-1969 (Marcus). The LNG-tanker type is treated as a MARAD data-entry error and is not carried.
