    Finding
NHHC identifies Kennedy as DD-306 and a Clemson-class destroyer, built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp. at San Francisco; launched 15 February 1919; commissioned 16 August 1920; design complement 95. Her San Diego-based Pacific Fleet service included West Coast operations, Caribbean exercises in 1924 and 1927, a 1925 Pacific cruise to Samoa, Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii maneuvers in 1928, and reserve training in 1929. Decommissioned at San Diego 1 May 1930; hulk sold 19 March 1931 for scrapping.

Design complement 95; actual crew counts not established
    Limitations
DANFS records identity, specifications and service. It does not document materials, asbestos, maintenance work, individual exposures or a sale-completion date for scrapping. Its complement 95 is a design figure, not a verified crew roster.

    Limitations
This source establishes participation in the squadron movement, not that Kennedy was one of the destroyers wrecked; it supplies no asbestos or exposure evidence.

§050-7.2.7, Handling and Removal of Asbestos Materials
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Navy technical guidance states that past naval shipbuilding programs made extensive use of asbestos in shipboard thermal insulation and deck tile, and lists forms including pipe covering and gaskets. This is fleet-wide historical context.

    Population
    Navy shipbuilding and inactive-ship workers
    Limitations
Retrospective fleet-wide guidance does not name Kennedy, her Clemson subclass, Bethlehem San Francisco, or the 1919–1930 installation period. It cannot establish that any listed material was aboard DD-306, or that anyone was exposed.

    Locator
    Other Records and their usefulness
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA explicitly states that deck logs and muster rolls do not directly document asbestos use or presence in a Navy vessel; logs can help identify major-work dates and rolls can identify assigned personnel.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
An authenticated CourtListener v4 exact-name docket query for "USS Kennedy" returned six hits; none of the returned index excerpts identifies DD-306. Two dockets concern asbestos (Maclachlan v. General Electric and Pitcher v. Union Carbide), but their Kennedy hull attribution is unresolved from this index. Other hits are unrelated bankruptcy, employment, Navy chaplaincy, and copyright litigation. Repeated exact-name opinion and hull-number docket/opinion requests were blocked by the helper shared pacing budget before HTTP; no results are available for these three required searches.

    Limitations
Partial sweep: the name-only index cannot identify DD-306 in either asbestos docket. This is not a finding of no DD-306 litigation. The three remaining query types were denied by the fleet pacing helper before HTTP, so the full sweep could not be completed; no exposure finding or allegation is attributed to this hull.

    historical_record
    Finding
NARA directs pre-1961 vessel asbestos research to RG 19 ship-specific holdings, including destroyer General Information Books (Entry P 9), ship and machinery specifications, and engineering drawings by hull number; S39 denotes insulation and lagging drawings. These series are follow-up leads for DD-306.
