    Finding
Archival lead: NARA's index links digitized deck logs for Kent County (LST-855) from January 1956 through January 1958, including the final decommissioning period. These are ship-specific operational records that may be reviewed for maintenance, overhaul, or material references.

    Limitations
The index demonstrates availability, not the contents of each log. No page-by-page review was performed and no inference about asbestos, repairs, materials, exposure, or disposal may be drawn until a relevant entry is retrieved and evaluated.

    Finding
NavSource's live LST-855 page reports that the LST-542-class hull was laid down 6 September 1944 at Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Seneca, Illinois; launched 27 November 1944; commissioned as USS LST-855 on 21 December 1944; decommissioned at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 15 February 1950; recommissioned 3 November 1950; named USS Kent County (LST-855) on 1 July 1955; finally decommissioned 22 January 1958; and sunk as a target 19 March 1958. Its LST-542 specifications list two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, no boilers, and a complement of 13 officers and 104 enlisted.

Chicago Bridge & Iron construction trades (1944); ship's company (1944-1958)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer historical/photo compilation, not a Navy registry or primary construction record. Its dates, specifications, complement, and disposition were not independently corroborated by a readable DANFS entry or NVR record in this pass. It contains no asbestos, material-survey, abatement, or litigation information.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Class/era inference: a wartime-built LST with the documented diesel plant falls within the period of Navy asbestos use in shipbuilding. Potential applications for a diesel LST of this era include diesel-exhaust and engine-room lagging, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, electrical insulation, and winch or windlass brake linings. The documented diesel machinery does not support boiler or steam-propulsion lagging as an application for this hull.

Construction trades (1944) and crew, especially machinery-space ratings (1944-1958)
    Limitations
This is not ship-specific documentation. No builder specification, insulation schedule, work package, survey, or sample identifies any asbestos-containing product aboard LST-855/Kent County. The applications are possible type-and-era pathways, not confirmed installations, quantities, locations, conditions, exposure, or causation.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the completed public-source review: the NARA deck-log index and NavSource page contain no asbestos, insulation-material, survey, abatement, or hazmat disclosure. The live NHHC DANFS URL for LST-855 returned 404; its available Wayback capture rendered only a fragment and did not provide usable vessel-history or materials text. CourtListener results are unavailable because the authenticated fleet helper reported a 32,845-second daily-quota wait before returning any results.

    Limitations
Absence of located material records does not prove asbestos was absent. This completed negative is limited to the listed non-Court sources; no CourtListener opinion or docket result was obtained, so it makes no litigation-negative finding. It does not establish or defeat exposure, causation, legal eligibility, or present material condition.
