- Finding
- After being placed out of Navy service, Kiasutha arrived at San Diego under tow on 23 September 1947; NHHC states a transfer to the Panama Canal Zone on 15 November, a 20 November departure under tow, an 11 December arrival at the canal, a 5 December Naval Register strike, and subsequent transfer to the Panama Canal Corporation.

- Limitations
- The 15 November 'transferred to the Panama Canal Zone' wording precedes the stated 20 November departure from San Diego; treat it as an administrative transfer, not proof of physical arrival. Final fate after Panama Canal Corporation transfer and asbestos condition are not established.

- Bureau of Ships General Correspondence; Cartographic Branch, Ship Engineering Drawings, RG 19 / 19-Hull and 19-Micro
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA identifies Bureau of Ships RG 19 correspondence filed by hull designation and ship engineering drawings arranged by hull and material group. The S39 insulation-and-lagging and S48 piping drawing groups are possible research paths for YT/YTB-463; no Kiasutha drawing or specification was retrieved in this batch.

- 1943-1947 potential records
- Limitations
- This is repository guidance, not a located hull-specific file. NARA says S39/S48 drawings are relatively rare among the paper drawings. It cannot support an assertion that Kiasutha carried asbestos.

[5]National Archives, An Introduction to Navy Deck Logs; Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]
- Locator
- An Introduction to Navy Deck Logs, opening paragraphs; asbestos guide, Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA explains that harbor tugs placed 'in service' ordinarily lacked the independent administrative identity of commissioned ships; their logs, if submitted to a parent command, generally were not retained as permanent deck logs. NARA also states that deck logs and muster rolls do not directly document asbestos aboard a vessel.

- 1940s archival practice
- Limitations
- General archival practice, not proof that a Kiasutha log is absent. A World War II exception is possible. Source for second statement: https://www.archives.gov/research/military/navy/guided-topics/asbestos. Neither guide is a ship-specific asbestos source.
