- Bethlehem-Hingham construction trades 1943-44; wartime and postwar crew (DANFS design complement 204, plus embarked UDT teams and up to 162 troops)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications - not materials or asbestos content. Entry predates the 1972 striking and 1975 sale, so final disposition comes from secondary sources. Does not establish exposure, asbestos presence, or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Official DOD test-series report names this hull: 'USS Knudson (APD-101) - A high-speed transport ship, Knudson arrived in the PPG [Pacific Proving Grounds] on 10 April and departed 23 July [1956]. As part of the Surface Patrol and Transport Unit (TU 7.3.3), Knudson operated as surface transport between Bikini and Enewetak for light freight and passengers. She ran through TEWA fallout on late 21 July while preparing for a potential evacuation of Enewetak Atoll. Exposure data for 158-man crew are summarized in Table 46.' The report also records: Knudson carried a receiver-recorder station for NRDL cloud-penetration rocket telemetry (shots CHEROKEE, ZUNI, NAVAJO, TEWA); at TEWA (Bikini, 21 July, 0546) she was in assigned area with 103 passengers embarked; washdown system operated during the series; series maximum permissible exposure set at 3.9 R with film badges for all participating personnel.

- Limitations
- Radiological context, not asbestos documentation - this source establishes hazardous-environment service and a documented fallout transit, nothing about materials aboard. Table 46 crew dose values exist in the report but were not transcribed verbatim (scan table). Full text reviewed via sonicbomb.com mirror of DNA-6037F; DTIC accession page confirms public release.

[4]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data U.S. Naval Vessels Vol. 1 (Jan 1945), DE design-group table + BuShips Standard Nomenclature/List of Naval Vessels hull-type table (TEV block DE 579-606); NavSource APD-101 spec card (boiler detail) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era inference: the BuShips hull-type table assigns DE-591 to the TEV design block (DE 579-606) - the Rudderow type: turbo-electric drive with 2 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750 deg F superheat feeding GE machinery, 12,000 shp, 2 shafts; the NavSource APD-101 spec card reads Babcock & Wilcox 'D' Express boilers for this hull's plant (secondary). A 1943-44 steam-plant combatant of this type would have carried era-standard asbestos insulation on boilers, steam lines, and machinery (lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, deck coverings, electrical insulation). The during-construction DE-to-APD conversion added troop accommodations and four LCVP davits. Builder Bethlehem-Hingham was a wartime emergency yard (~23,000-24,000 peak employment, 16 ways, built 1941 for DE construction, operated by Bethlehem's Fore River organization); the corporate parent Bethlehem Shipbuilding is a documented Atlas yard-level asbestos site - no Hingham-specific yard entry exists.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific finding. The BuShips table assigns design groups by hull number and does not describe this hull's materials; NavSource boiler attribution is secondary. Does not establish that asbestos products were installed on this hull, quantities, or any exposure outcome.

[5]NARA archival lead: USS Knudson deck logs in RG 24 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations 1941-1992'; BuShips RG 19 records incl. General Information Books (per-vessel material specifications); WWII action reports/war diary [other_primary]

- Finding
- Hull-level primary records exist in NARA holdings but are not digitized/located in public form: RG 24 deck log series covers 1941-1992 (this hull's commissioned periods 1944-46 and 1953-58 fall in scope; the VA digitization partnership prioritized Vietnam-era logs), and RG 19 BuShips 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are the standard archival lead for hull-level material documentation of WWII combatants. War diary/action reports for the 1945 Okinawa period would also exist in RG 38.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for this hull: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, shipyard hazmat disclosure, environmental record, or docketed asbestos litigation naming USS Knudson (DE-591/APD-101/LPR-101) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping 10 January 1975 - before abatement-era documentation regimes - and no museum or in-service survey pathway exists.

- Limitations
- Sweep coverage limited to CourtListener indexes via the fleet-authenticated helper; PACER-only dockets and state-court filings outside CL coverage are not swept. Two planned queries ('"Knudson" asbestos' opinion; '"DE-591"' RECAP docket) were repeatedly blocked by shared fleet pacing and are logged as residual gaps in the search ledger. A null result does not prove no litigation exists - it establishes no qualifying indexed record was located on this date.
