    Finding
DANFS entry for Lagrange (APA-124): laid down under a Maritime Commission contract 26 June 1944 by California Shipbuilding Corp., Wilmington, Calif.; launched 1 September 1944 (sponsor Mrs. Albert Krutcher); acquired by the Navy 10 November 1944; commissioned 11 November 1944, Capt. Frank R. Walker in command. Service: departed San Diego 1 January 1945; Manus 18 January; Hollandia/Philippines; Transport Squadron 17; Kerama Retto landings from 26 March 1945 and ~30 days off Okinawa; Saipan 6 May; Eniwetok 11 July; Buckner Bay ~5 August. On 13 August 1945 a kamikaze carrying a 50-pound bomb crashed into her superstructure and a second suicide plane struck a kingpost and splashed 20 yards off - 21 killed, 89 wounded, considerable damage. Repaired, departed Guam 6 September, arrived San Francisco 21 September; decommissioned 27 October 1945 and returned to WSA. One battle star.

    Limitations
Official Navy history, but DANFS names the commissioning CO as Capt. Frank R. Walker while the NavSource CO list (from operational records) gives Capt. Howard D. McIntosh, USNR - conflict logged, not resolved (see correction row). 'Returned to WSA' is DANFS phrasing; MARAD custody record shows NDRF entry the same date. Contains no asbestos, materials, or insulation information.

    Limitations
Secondary archival compilation, not an official record; specs are class-typical data displayed on the hull page. Internal typo ('16 November 1975' for the 1955 repair-program return) and 'TransDiv Forty-Nine (flagship)' label - the contemporaneous division order lists USS Chilton as flagship (see correction row). Era/design inference: the VC2-S-AP5 is a single-screw geared-steam ship (Westinghouse turbine, 2 superheated B&W boilers, 465 psi/750 deg F) built in 1944 at peak wartime asbestos use; period-typical asbestos applications for such a plant were boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, accommodation insulation, and brake linings. Attack-transport outfitting (troop berthing, mess, galley) added interior insulation/joiner scope.

Documented disturbance windows aboard this hull: (a) kamikaze battle damage to the superstructure on 13 August 1945 ('considerable damage' per DANFS) followed by field repairs at Guam August-September 1945; (b) withdrawal from the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet 23 August 1955 to Coastwise Line under a repair-program general agency agreement, returned November 1955. Both are documented events; any asbestos-containing-material disturbance within them is inference only.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming the LaGrange hull was found in the public sources searched - DANFS, NavSource, and the MARAD record contain no asbestos or insulation-material statement; CourtListener opinion searches for all ship-name spellings and the hull number returned zero hits or non-ship name collisions (see search_ledger).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 geared-steam hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials. County-name spelling variants (LaGrange/La Grange) under-cover litigation filings that omit hull numbers; docket-index sweeps returned only surname/place collisions (see ledger). Does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Source discrepancies documented: (a) Commissioning CO - DANFS names Capt. Frank R. Walker; NavSource's CO list names CAPT Howard D. McIntosh USNR (to 28 Jul 1945) then CDR Preston S. Tambling - unresolved, both reported. (b) Stricken date - NavSource 15 November 1945; NavalCoverMuseum 23 November 1945 - unresolved. (c) Launch date - DANFS/NavSource 1 September 1944 vs shipbuildinghistory (MC-record-derived) 27 July 1944 - DANFS adopted. (d) MARAD record lists 'General Type: Training (School)' - data artifact for an attack transport. (e) NavSource styles LaGrange 'TransDiv Forty-Nine (flagship)' - the 11 March 1945 division order names USS Chilton as flagship. (f) Name spelling - DANFS 'Lagrange', MARAD 'LA GRANGE', builder's plate 'SS LA GRANGE', county spelling 'LaGrange'.
