    Finding
Documented for this hull: laid down 22 February 1944 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., Manitowoc, Wis.; launched 18 June 1944 (sponsor Mrs. W. T. Nelson); commissioned 17 November 1944, Cmdr. William T. Nelson. Three war patrols - lifeguard duty off Formosa and Hong Kong; Java Sea patrol; Siam Gulf patrol with 28 May coordinated gun attack with BLUEBACK (SS-326) damaging a 60-ton escort; Singapore-area gun actions August 1945. Entered Mare Island Navy Yard, decommissioned 3 June 1946, into reserve. Transferred on loan to the Government of Argentina 21 July 1960; serves as SANTA FE (S-11). Four battle stars. Bauer & Roberts supplement: Santa Fe broken up in 1971 for spare parts; former Lamprey stricken from the US Navy Register 1 September 1971.

Construction trades 1944 (Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co.); Mare Island inactivation trades (1946); crew (1944-1946; Argentine service)
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. NavSource swaps the Argentine names of Lamprey and Macabi - DANFS names (Santa Fe for Lamprey) carried; see gaps.

    Finding
NavSource: laid down 22 February 1944 at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co.; decommissioned 3 June 1946 at Mare Island Navy Yard; transferred on loan to Argentina 21 August 1960 - entry names her 'Santiago Del Estero (S-12)', which is ex-USS Macabi's Argentine name per DANFS; returned to US Navy custody 1 September 1971, struck from the Naval Register and sold outright to Argentina; broken up in 1971 for spare parts. CORRECTION: NavSource transposes the Argentine names of Lamprey and Macabi - DANFS assigns SANTA FE (S-11) to Lamprey and SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO (S-12) to Macabi, and this record follows DANFS. NavSource's transfer date (21 August 1960) also differs from DANFS (21 July 1960).

    Limitations
Secondary compilation, not an official record. The Argentine-name transposition is a documented NavSource defect - DANFS names carried. The 21 July vs 21 August 1960 transfer-date conflict is unresolved.

  3. [3]Era inference built on: DANFS spec block (diesel-electric drive, no boilers); BuShips Ships' Data 1945 submarine machinery tables (shipscribe.com SDB1945v1); documented yard-period events above [other_primary]

    Finding
A diesel-electric fleet boat built 1944 at Manitowoc sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. Diesel-electric boats carried no boilers/steam plant: era-consistent asbestos applications are diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley/refrigeration insulation, and battery/electrical materials. Documented yard event for this hull: 1946 Mare Island Navy Yard inactivation - a second, limited asbestos-relevant work window (inactivation/preservation work).

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for this hull. Names era-standard diesel-boat applications, not confirmed installed materials; inactivation scope is not documented per-hull. No quantities.

GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - covering this hull's construction, service-era insulation, and 1946 Mare Island inactivation.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS Lamprey (SS-372) was found. Google Scholar exact-name "USS Lamprey" returned zero published-opinion hits; hull-number "SS-372" produced 10 hits, all name collisions ('SS' litigant-initials cases, NJ family-court opinions, citation fragments). No NVR detail page extant for this hull. CourtListener sweeps blocked this session - public search UI bot-challenged (HTTP 202) and v4 API throttled (HTTP 429, shared 125/day quota); Google Scholar substituted for published opinions.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Scholar covers published opinions only - RECAP/docket-level text was not searched (CourtListener blocked); an unresolved sweep limitation, logged in the ledger.
