- DANFS record for this hull: 'Lansdale (DD-766), a Gearing class destroyer was laid down 2 April 1944, by Bethlehem Steel Co., San Francisco Calif.; launched 20 December 1946; Sponsored by Mrs. Ethel S. Lansdale; and delivered 30 December in partially completed status to the 12th Naval district for berthing at Suisan Bay. Lansdale saw no active service. In May 1956 she was towed to Long Beach Naval Shipyard where her bow was removed to replace the damaged bow of Floyd B. Parks (DD-884). Her name was struck from the naval register 9 June 1958.' Establishes: never commissioned, never in active service; incomplete-hull custody at Suisun Bay 1946-1956; bow cannibalized for DD-884 repair 1956; stricken 9 June 1958.

Spec block describes the Gearing class design - not what was actually installed in this incomplete hull. No materials or asbestos content.

[4]DANFS, Floyd B. Parks (DD-884) entry - verbatim transcription via hazegray.org (Wayback capture 2022-09-10) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- hazegray.org DANFS mirror, dd884txt.htm - paragraph on 1956 collision and Long Beach repair
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS record for USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884) documents the transfer of this hull's bow into active fleet service: on 11 March 1956 Floyd B. Parks 'collided with Columbus (CA-74), losing 2 men and a 40-foot section of her bow'; after temporary repairs at Subic Bay she returned to Long Beach Naval Shipyard, where 'Floyd B. Parks damaged bow was replaced with that of the uncompleted destroyer Lansdale (DD-766).' Approximately 40 feet of DD-766's structure therefore remained in service aboard an operating Gearing-class destroyer until that ship's 1973 decommissioning (sold for scrap 29 April 1984 per NavSource).

- Long Beach Naval Shipyard workers performing the bow removal/graft, 1956; crew of USS Floyd B. Parks 1956-1973 (aboard a section originally built as DD-766)
- Limitations
- Documents hull-component transfer, not materials. The printed DANFS text dates the Long Beach return '14 May 1966' - internally inconsistent (collision was 11 March 1956; NavSource dates the tow May 1956) and carried as a 1956 typo in gaps. Whether the grafted bow section carried any asbestos insulation is undocumented - bow structure is generally uninsulated, but no materials survey exists either way.

- destroyerhistory.org Gearing class page - canceled-hull paragraph
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Destroyer History Foundation class history records the cancellation sequence: 'Keels for Lansdale (DD 766) and Seymour D. Owens (DD 767) were laid down at Bethlehem Steel, San Francisco, April 2 and 3 1944. Launched 20 December 1946 and 24 February 1947 respectively after further construction was canceled, their incomplete hulks were berthed at Suisun Bay, California. In 1956, the two were towed to Long Beach, where their hulls were used to repair Floyd B. Parks and Ernest G. Small. In 1959, their remains were sold for scrapping.' Confirms launch-after-cancellation and the paired reuse of the two incomplete Bethlehem SF hulks.

- Foundation-maintained secondary compilation; corroborates DANFS/NavSource but is not a primary source. Names DD-767 (Seymour D. Owens) as the parallel hulk whose bow went to Ernest G. Small (DD-838) in 1952 - recorded here as class context only; DD-838's DANFS entry independently confirms the Owens graft.

Class project history lists DD-720/721/766/767/791 as suspended/incomplete members.

- Finding
- Class/era inference for this hull: a Gearing-class destroyer laid down April 1944 carried a design plant of 4 Babcock & Wilcox superheated boilers and 60,000-shp GE geared turbines in the peak Navy asbestos era - consistent with boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe lagging, turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets, packing, and accommodation insulation. Litigation recital supports the class design: the Goodrich omnibus opinion recites that 'an engineering drawing for the insulation and lagging of forced draft blower turbines for the class of destroyers (DD 692, USS Allen M. Sumner class), within which the USS Harlan Dickson fell, specifies the use of amosite felts and asbestos cloths,' and quotes an expert partial tally of 30.3 tons of asbestos-containing thermal insulation/lagging in fire and engine rooms of Sumner/Gearing destroyers. Builder yard context: Bethlehem Steel San Francisco resolves to the Atlas 'bethlehem-shipbuilding' record (tier 3; enterprise-documented asbestos products incl. Unibestos, Marinite, Transite, lagging, gaskets, packing).

- Limitations
- INFERENCE ONLY - and weaker than for a completed class member: this hull was canceled 7 January 1946 and launched in 'partially completed status' (DANFS), so whether boilers, machinery, or insulation products were ever installed is undocumented. The Goodrich recitals are litigation-record quotations of an engineering drawing and an expert report, not adjudicated classwide quantities; the underlying exhibits were not retrieved. Yard products are enterprise-documented, not tied to this hull. Establishes no quantities and no individual exposure.

Madoff, S.D.N.Y. Bk. 08-01789 - 'DD-' is a docket-entry numbering artifact); 'Lansdale' - 1,652 opinions, top-20 all collisions (Lansdale Borough PA litigation, TIC Philly Landsdale real estate, Jill Lansdale Title VII employment); 'Lansdale asbestos' - 34 opinions, all Pennsylvania asbestos litigation where 'Lansdale' is a Montgomery County locale or attorney address, none naming a vessel; 'Lansdale' - 3,949 dockets, top-20 all surname bankruptcies/criminal and Lansdale Borough; 'Lansdale asbestos' - 251 dockets, top-20 all collisions (PA entities; asbestos-bankruptcy debtor dockets with incidental 'Lansdale' matches). Structural note: the hull was never commissioned, so no crew-exposure claim pathway exists; any service-based 'USS Lansdale' claim would most plausibly refer to DD-426, the commissioned second Lansdale sunk 20 April 1944.

- Limitations
- Sweep coverage is bounded by the RECAP/opinion index - unindexed complaints and settled cases are not visible, so this records 'none located,' not 'none exists.' Name-collision risk is real in both directions: DD-426 (sunk 1944) and DD-101 (decommissioned 1931) share the name, and 'Lansdale' collides heavily with a Pennsylvania borough and a common surname.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Disposal-venue context: the incomplete hulk was sold 9 June 1959 to National Metal & Steel Co., the ship-breaking firm operating on the former California Shipbuilding property at Terminal Island, Los Angeles Harbor. The Los Angeles Times (1991) documented that after the leaseholder departed, testing found serious site contamination (heavy metals and PCBs) and a county-supervised cleanup was performed at roughly $12 million cost to the Port - consistent with an unregulated-era breaking yard. Company operations on Terminal Island ceased 1 January 1986.
