Oldendorf, wife of Rear Admiral Oldendorf); commissioned 23 January 1943, Comdr. O. G. Kirk. Eight war patrols: first patrol in the Sea of Okhotsk/Sea of Japan - first U.S. submarine to slip through a mined strait into the Sea of Japan (3 July 1943); second off Honshu sinking Taichi Maru (18 Oct); Mare Island overhaul winter 1943-44 refitted with four new engines; third patrol sinking Toyokuni Maru, Nichirei Maru and Hokuroku Maru (Mar 1944); fourth sinking Wales Maru and Bizen Maru (24 May); fifth sinking Kyodo Maru No. 36 and tanker Tinshin Maru (Jul); sixth wolfpack with Flasher and Bonefish sinking Shun Yuan and tanker Hokki Maru and cargo ship Ejiri Maru (Sep-Oct); seventh on the Mindoro/Leyte scouting line - last submarine out of Lingayen Gulf before the invasion landings; final patrol lifeguard for British carrier strikes and B-24/B-29 missions. Navy Unit Commendation for patrols three through six; four battle stars. Decommissioned in reserve 25 July 1946 at New London; recommissioned at Portsmouth, N.H., 13 April 1957 (NavSource: snorkel and partial 'Guppy' conversion); decommissioned and struck 10 August 1957; transferred to Greece under the Military Assistance Program 8 August 1957 as Poseidon (S-78).

    Finding
Machinery fit for this hull per NavSource 'as built' spec block: diesel electric reduction gear with four Hoover, Owens, Rentschler Co. main generator diesel engines (5,400 hp), four Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co. main motors (2,740 hp), two 126-cell main storage batteries, twin propellers. NO BOILERS and no steam plant. Two documented machinery-disturbance events: refit with four new engines at Mare Island Navy Yard (winter 1943-44, DANFS) and a 1957 snorkel plus partial 'Guppy' conversion at Portsmouth (NavSource) - yard work that would have disturbed era-standard engine/exhaust insulation.

    Limitations
The NavSource spec block is a class-standard spec sheet, not a per-hull machinery survey - actual installed equipment is presumed class-typical and unverified for this specific hull. No hull-specific machinery or material list was located. Establishes propulsion type only, not fiber content.

  4. [4]CourtListener API v4 (opinions type=o, RECAP dockets type=r) exact-name and hull-number searches; site:courtlistener.com index sweep as throttling fallback [court_record]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows for this vessel
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Litigation sweep for this hull: CourtListener API queries were throttled at the daily cap (HTTP 429; 'Expected available in ~17.3 hours'), so the sweep ran on the site:courtlistener.com index fallback for "USS Lapon" and "SS-260". The fallback surfaced only unrelated material (Mingo surname litigation; Fitzgerald; Thresher/Liberty FOIA) - nothing naming this hull. No qualifying asbestos litigation - and no litigation of any kind verified as naming this hull - was located.

    ship_specific
    Accessed

    Limitations
A negative result is bounded by the search mechanism: CourtListener coverage is not exhaustive for state-court pleadings, and the API throttle meant docket-text and opinion queries could not complete - the site:-index fallback is corroboration, not a substitute for docket search. Does not prove no litigation exists.

  5. [5]Negative finding: no qualifying non-litigation ship-specific asbestos record located across DANFS/NHHC (via transcription sources), NavSource, NARA guided topic, and ACM-survey/abatement/disposal sweeps [other_primary]

    search_ledger rows for this vessel
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, transfer-hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding naming this vessel was located anywhere in the research sweep. Two Mare Island yard periods (1943-44 four-engine refit; Jan 1945) and the 1957 Portsmouth snorkel/partial-Guppy conversion are era-material disturbance events, not asbestos evidence; Greek custody (1957-76) and the 1976 target sinking have no located material documentation.

    Finding type

    Finding
Postwar custody and terminal disposition for this hull: decommissioned in reserve at New London 25 July 1946 into the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; recommissioned at Portsmouth, N.H., 13 April 1957 for snorkel and partial 'Guppy' conversion (NavSource); decommissioned and struck 10 August 1957; transferred on loan to Greece under the Military Assistance Program 8 August 1957 - commissioned HS Poseidon (Y-16/S-78), the first U.S.-built submarine in the Hellenic Navy. U.S. name canceled 22 March 1965 to clear it for SSN-661; struck from the U.S. Naval Vessel Register 31 December 1975; purchased by Greece April 1976 for spare parts; sunk as a target in the Aegean Sea April 1976 (NavSource). Greek-service (1957-76) material history undocumented.

GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-management regime covering this hull's postwar custody: the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s; standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades unless a yard period disturbed it.

    Locator
NARA guided topic page, RG 19/RG 38 series description
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's guided research topic 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' identifies where hull-level material records would live if they exist: Record Group 19 (Bureau of Ships) general/confidential/secret correspondence filed by hull designation (this hull: 'SS260') and Record Group 38 (Board of Inspection and Survey reports, written before trials/after conversions/before demilitarization). No digitized per-hull asbestos material was located in the public sweep; these series are not digitized and require in-person or hired-researcher access.

    Limitations
A research-pathway pointer, not evidence about this hull: the RG 19/RG 38 series may contain hull-level material records but are not digitized and were not searched for this batch. The guide itself documents that per-vessel asbestos determination requires correspondence-level research, not that any record exists.
