- DANFS carries a full entry for this hull under 'Lapwing' (YMS-268): spec block 'dp. 236; l. 136'; b. 24'6"; dr. 10'; s. 15 k; cpl. 32; a. 1 3", 2 20-mm, 2 dep., 2 dct.; cl. Service narrative: after west-coast shakedown, YMS-268 trained minesweeper crews out of San Pedro, Calif. through most of the war; arrived Pearl Harbor 26 May 1945; assigned to the 7th Fleet and operated out of Guam, the Philippines, and Okinawa July-August; after the Japanese surrender removed mines from Tokyo Bay and around Honshu; departed Kobe 9 March 1946, reached San Francisco 24 April; steamed to the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence River, arriving Chicago 25 July for the 9th Naval District Reserve Training program; decommissioned and placed in service 1 November 1946; reclassified AMS-48 and named Lapwing 1 September 1947; recommissioned 12 February 1951 at Orange, Tex., LT Charles M. Kirkham in command; arrived Charleston, S.C., 18 March; operated along the east coast developing new mine-warfare techniques until 1957; reclassified MSC(O)-48 7 February 1955; decommissioned 15 November 1957 at New York into the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; struck from the Navy list 1 November 1959. One battle star for World War II service.

- DANFS documents identity, construction, and service narrative only - it contains no materials, insulation, or asbestos information and supports no asbestos claim. The transcription mirror carries OCR artifacts (e.g., 'Robe' for Kobe, 'pros gram' for program); the NHHC live page was unavailable (404 on modern path, empty body on legacy path - standing link-rot defect). NavSource conflicts on the two decommission dates are carried in gaps.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The Colton shipbuilding table for Kruse & Banks Shipbuilding, North Bend OR, independently lists this hull: 'YMS 268 / US Navy / Minesweeper / 278d / 136 ft / delivered 28-Jun-43 / Reclassified 1947 as Lapwing (AMS 48/MSCO 48), sold 1960 as fishing vessel Weems, later Endeavor' - the delivery date agrees exactly with NavSource's completion date (28 June 1943), and the AMS-48/MSC(O)-48 reclassification and Weems/Endeavor fishing-vessel chain match NavSource's disposition. Yard history per Colton: Kruse & Banks was founded by Knut V. Kruse in 1902, joined by Robert Banks in 1905, moved from Marshfield to North Bend c.1909, and closed in 1946 with the land sold to Weyerhaeuser - a small yacht/fishing-boat yard that built four YMS hulls visible in the same table block (YMS 265, 266, 267, 268) plus ATR rescue tugs.

- Finding
- NARA's digitized Navy deck-log index lists this vessel under all three designations - 'Lapwing (MSCO/AMS-48/YMS-268)' - with commission windows 'Commission: July 1943, Decommission: November 1946; Recommission: February 1951, Decommission: November 1957' that match the DANFS milestone dates. Digitized log months verified in the index: January-December 1956 (NAIDs 179692618, 179692750, 179692874, 179692998, 179693048, 179693086, 179693134, 179693202, 179693270, 179693336, 219676400, 219676466) and January-November 1957 (NAIDs 219676534 through 219677222) - 23 months of deck logs available in the National Archives Catalog for the MSC(O)-48 period. NARA's own asbestos-research guide cautions that deck logs 'do not provide any information on the use of or presence of asbestos in Navy ships or ship components and therefore provide no direct evidence of asbestos' - their use is to date overhauls or significant work aboard.

- MSC(O)-48 crew and anyone researching work periods aboard, 1956-1957
- Limitations
- The index establishes that a deck-log series for this hull exists and that 23 months (1956-01 to 1957-11) are digitized - it does not establish wartime (1943-46) digitization, and per NARA's own guide the logs 'provide no direct evidence of asbestos' regardless. Wartime monthly file units under YMS-268 in RG 24 series 594258 are an unverified paper-holdings lead (catalog search is key-gated this session). Commission/decommission windows printed in the index are catalog metadata, not independent commissioning evidence.

- Finding
- Era/class context: the Navy's own disposal EIS states asbestos-containing material 'is found throughout Navy ships in insulating materials on piping systems, in electrical cables, and on ship structures,' and the 2012 companion EA states 'asbestos insulation is commonly found in older ships' - era-generic statements covering a 1942-43 Navy build; Corn & Starr document extensive asbestos use as fireproofing and insulation in WWII-era U.S. shipbuilding and the Navy's 1943 'Minimum Requirements for Safety and Industrial Health in Contract Shipyards' regulating asbestos work at every yard building or repairing Navy vessels - terms covering small contract-yacht-yard construction such as Kruse & Banks's YMS hulls, not only large combatants; NAVSEA's FOIA index lists the qualified asbestos product categories in force during this hull's era (asbestos-rod packing; metallic-asbestos spiral-wound gaskets; asbestos-fiber thermal insulation felt; magnesia-aggregate deck covering; thermal pipe covering; preformed cable packing); and NARA's official research guide treats 'the use of asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941-1961' as a documented topic, with insulation/lagging engineering drawings filed by hull number under filing code S39. This hull was a YMS-1-class wooden-hulled motor minesweeper with a diesel plant (two GM 8-268A diesels, twin screw - no boilers, no steam system), so the era-typical asbestos footprint is materially smaller than a steam combatant's - principally engine exhaust lagging, valve/flange gaskets, pump and shaft packing, electrical cable insulation, deck coverings, and winch/windlass brake linings.

La. 1944, an in-rem admiralty proceeding against a private vessel; U.S. public vessels were not subject to in-rem arrest under the Public Vessels Act) plus shipping/street/surname and bird-name collisions - and 44 'Lapwing' docket hits, all name collisions (bankruptcy, unrelated civil dockets, street/personal names). - Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era materials in a 1943 diesel minesweeper would still be consistent with class inference. CourtListener coverage: all executed queries returned; one combined designator RECAP-docket query was not completed (timeout, then fleet pacing budget momentarily spent) - logged as a coverage gap, not a result. Unindexed, settled, or unreported matters naming this hull could exist. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
