- Documented for this hull: 'laid down 18 October 1940 by Marietta Manufacturing Co., Point Pleasant, W. Va., launched 2 July 1941; and placed in service 13 December 1941, Lt. C. B. Coale, USNR, in command.' After shakedown assigned to the 3d Naval District, ASW patrol out of New York harbor; departed New York 12 April 1942 for Trinidad, arriving two weeks later, for patrol and net-laying operations in the West Indies. 'Larch was placed in full commission at Trinidad 13 December 1942, Lt. C. C. Dilcer in command and was reclassified AN-21 on 20 January 1944.' She 'laid, maintained, and removed antitorpedo and antisubmarine nets in the West Indies throughout World War II.' On 10 January 1945 she 'helped salvage a Pan American Clipper which had crashed in the Gulf of Paria, Venezuela, recovering six bodies and the plane fuselage.' Departing Trinidad 25 September (1945, by sequence), arrived Norfolk 12 October; 'She was struck from the Navy list 5 March 1947, and transferred to Turkey under the Military Assistance Program 10 May 1948. She serves the Turkish Navy as AG-4 (P-304).' Spec block: 'YN-16: dp. 560; l. 157'8"; b. 30'6"; dr. 10'6"; s. 14.5 k. cpl. 48; a. 1 3", 2 .50 cal AA, 1 Y-gun; cl. Aloe.'

The transcription reads 'decommissioned there 28 June 1948' - internally inconsistent with the same entry's 5 March 1947 striking and 10 May 1948 transfer; treated as a transcription typo for 1946 (NavSource's date; see correction row ev-10 and gaps). 'Departing Trinidad 25 September' omits the year; 1945 inferred from narrative sequence. - NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track DANFS/NVR but specification figures conflict with DANFS and ShipScribe class data on displacement, length, draft, speed, and complement (see gaps). [4]ShipScribe (S. S. Roberts), USS Aloe (AN-6) Class - Navy YN-1/AN-6 design data and construction table compiled from official BuShips/BuC&R records [other_primary]

- Finding
- The construction table names this hull: AN-21 LARCH, ordered 27 July 1940, builder Marietta Mfg., keel 18 October 1940, launched 2 July 1941, in service 13 December 1941. Class data: Aloe class (AN-6 through AN-37, originally YN-1 through YN-32; 32 ships, FY 1941, steel hulls), design 'Navy YN-1/AN-6'; displacement 560 light / 805 limiting tons; 163.2' oa x 146.0' wl x 30.5' e x 11.7' lim; diesel electric, 1 screw, 800 HP; 12.5 kts; complement 46 (1944). Class notes: in late 1939 the Navy developed a net-defense program; on 28 Nov 1939 BuC&R forwarded British net-laying (HMS PROTECTOR) and boom-defense (HMS BARRIER) designs, and on 12 Dec 1939 CNO recommended adhering to British designs to expedite the program. Marietta Mfg. built four class members (AN-18 Gum Tree, AN-19 Holly, AN-20 Elder, AN-21 Larch).

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA inventories deck logs for YN-16 covering 4/1/1942-5/31/1944 - the physical logs sit within the RG 24 logbook series at NARA College Park. These logs are the primary undigitized source for her West Indies operations, availabilities, and any recorded injury/material events. As of this session the hull is absent from NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' index (the fully-digitized list), while sister ship Elder (AN-20/YN-15, same builder) appears on it - so Elder's WWII logs are readable online and Larch's are not yet.

- Finding
- NARA-held Bureau of Ships photography documents this hull's pre-commissioning trials in the Kanawha River (adjacent to her builder's Point Pleasant yard) on 14 November 1941. An NHHC-held photograph (ZP-51 Historical Files) documents Larch at Blanquilla Island on 6 August 1943 recovering the gondola/car of non-rigid airship K-68 after its forced landing - an operational event additional to the DANFS narrative. - Finding type

- Finding
- Builder context: Marietta Manufacturing Company (chartered in West Virginia 1915; 42-acre Point Pleasant site with marine railway and building ways) was a major inland shipyard; during WWII it built four Navy net tenders - the group including this hull per the ShipScribe construction table - plus 16 Army mine planters and 53 Army landing tugs, employed up to ~2,200 workers (a substantial share of them women as 'Rosie the Riveters'), and received the Army-Navy 'E' Award in 1944. The company went bankrupt and closed February 1970; the site later operated as Point Pleasant Marine until 1984.

[8]Era inference built on: DANFS spec block and NavSource specifications for this hull (diesel-electric net tender, steel hull, 1940-41 build); ShipScribe class data (Aloe class design); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy asbestos-era documentation (see ev-08) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A steel-hulled diesel-electric net tender built 1940-41 for the FY1941 Aloe-class program sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small combatant of this type and period were exhaust-system and machinery lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined hull volume, plus insulation in accommodation spaces. As a diesel-electric ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; net-handling machinery (12-ton boom, winches) adds friction-material (brake/clutch lining) inference at era level.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-larch-yn16-01 through -14
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Larch (YN-16/AN-21/TCG AG-4) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener status this session: exact-name opinion query "USS Larch" (type=o) returned zero hits; the remaining three base queries (exact-name docket, hull-number opinion, hull-number docket) could not be run - the fleet-wide pacing limiter reported its hourly budget spent; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. A secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos' material is law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com yard page for the builder and similar) - excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (partially run, mostly pacing-blocked). Deck logs (NARA, 4/1942-5/1944 coverage), Marietta Mfg. work packages, and Turkish-service/disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- CORRECTION: the hazegray DANFS transcription for this hull prints the decommissioning date as '28 June 1948' - a date that postdates her striking from the Navy List (5 March 1947) and is adjacent to her transfer to Turkey (10 May 1948), an impossible sequence. NavSource and Wikipedia both carry 28 June 1946, which is consistent with the sequence (decommission 1946 -> strike 1947 -> transfer 1948). The 1948 figure is treated as a transcription/typographical error and 1946 is carried.
