- Action report, serial 19-44 dated 6 December 1944, signed by commanding officer T. R. Larson: USS LCI(L)-1018 sailed with Task Unit 78.3.10 (8 LSMs plus LCI(L)s 1014, 1017, 1018 of Group 24, LCI(L) Flotilla 8) carrying troops and mechanized units from Dulag to Baybay, Leyte; beached at 0010 on 5 December, unloaded, retracted at 0032. During ensuing Japanese air attacks a Val-type plane attempted a crash dive on this vessel, was hit by its gunfire, broke apart, and crashed within about 50 yards off the port bow; the craft expended 632 rounds of 20 mm, jettisoned one gun barrel after a jam, fought fires aboard the crash-dived USS LSM-23 alongside, sent pharmacist's mates to treat LSM-23 wounded, and stood by when USS Mugford (DD-389) was crash-dived off Cabugan Grande Island. USS LSM-20 was sunk in the same action. No casualties aboard this vessel.

- NARA Special List 44 ('List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947'), page 358, records two logbooks for LCI(L)-1018 spanning 18 April 1944 - 30 June 1945. The coverage start equals the commissioning date; the 30 June 1945 endpoint marks the end of the archived log run and is not a decommissioning or strike date. The logbooks are held in textual form at Archives II, College Park, and are not digitized in the National Archives Catalog.

Log coverage endpoints are not commissioning/decommissioning evidence; the start date here coincides with commissioning only because the first log opens at commissioning. Albina yard list corroborates: hull 168, LCI(L)-1018, delivered 18 April 1944, 'to Argentina 1948 as BDI No. 13 (Q-52)'.

- Secondary compilation, not a primary or official source - NavSource itself credits a 1995 published book, and ShipbuildingHistory is an independently compiled yard list. Construction dates and the commissioning date are corroborated by the NARA commissioning muster roll (ev-01); combat operations are corroborated where located by NARA action reports (ev-02 through ev-05); Leyte (Nov 1944) and Mindoro attributions, the LCI(G) conversion, all 1948 transfer/strike dates, Argentine service, and the battle-star count rest on secondary sources alone.

- Finding
- Department of Labor Benefits Review Board decision documents asbestos exposure at this hull's builder yard: in K.M. v. Lockheed Shipbuilding et al. (BRB No. 08-0403), a shipyard carpenter employed 1956-1960 at three Portland yards (Lockheed/Puget Sound Bridge & Dry Dock, Albina Engine and Machine, Willamette Iron & Steel) died of mesothelioma in 2002; the administrative law judge found 'clear, credible, and unrebutted evidence' of asbestos exposure during that employment and found Albina Engine to be the last employer to expose the decedent to asbestos, making Albina the responsible employer for death benefits.

- Limitations
- Builder-yard litigation, not hull evidence: the decedent's Albina employment was 1956 repair-era work, not the 1944 construction of this vessel, and the decision identifies no vessel. - Finding
- Era-level inference only: a 1944-built U.S. Navy welded-steel landing craft with diesel machinery falls inside the documented era of extensive Navy shipboard asbestos use (ev-11), and its builder is an adjudicated asbestos-exposure workplace (ev-10). Era-typical applications for a craft of this size and plant would be limited relative to steam vessels - engine exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical and sound insulation, deck coverings; no boilers or steam-line insulation exist on this plant. No class-level asbestos product schedule for the LCI-351 class was located.
