Albina construction trades (1944); crew (1944-46); embarked troops during operations
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but the commanding-officer table prints '19 May 1944' for Bartley vs the 19 June 1944 commissioning date in the body (one-month variant, see gaps). The NARA log-holdings filing designation for this hull is LCI(L)(R)-1026. Page last updated 27 October 2023.

    Finding
NARA's own logbook holdings list records deck logs for this hull under the filing designation 'LCI(L)(R)-1026' covering 6/19/1944 through 6/30/1945 - a dated operational record establishing service from commissioning day through the Okinawa campaign window. Neighboring Albina-built sister hulls (LCI(L)(R)-1024, -1028, -1029, -1030) appear in the same block with the same 6/30/1945 endpoint, consistent with batch log transfers to NARA.

    Population
    Crew during log coverage (1944-45)
    Limitations
Holdings-coverage entry, not a log content: establishes that deck logs for this hull exist in NARA custody for 6/19/1944-6/30/1945, not what the logs contain. Log coverage endpoints are NOT commissioning/decommissioning dates - 6/19/1944 coincides with the documented commissioning date but the 6/30/1945 endpoint is a holdings-transfer cutoff, not end of service. Post-June-1945 logs (occupation service through decommissioning) are in the post-1941 series at Archives II, College Park, undigitized. Logs sit in RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel), Entry 118 family. No asbestos content.

    vessel_history
    Finding
Albina yard list names this hull: yard hull no. 176, 'LCI(L) 1026', U.S. Navy Landing Craft, 246 gt, 159 ft, delivered 19-Jun-44, 'To USMC 1946'. The surrounding rows document Albina's block of LCI(L) contracts (yard nos. 163-183+, hulls 1013-1033+), situating this hull inside Albina's wartime landing-craft production line. Yard corporate history on the same page: founded 1904 as a repair yard; sold to Dillingham Corp. ~1971 (became Dillingham Ship Repair); shipyard division became Cascade General after Dillingham's 1986 liquidation; the original Albina yard on N. River Street, upstream of Portland's Fremont Bridge, was closed.

    Albina construction trades (1944)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation, not a government record - the author (Colton) is the standard reference for US shipyard production lists and his entries track builder/Navy records, but the 'To USMC 1946' disposal note conflicts by one year with NavSource's 'transferred to the Maritime Commission 10 January 1947' (see gaps). Yard-number and delivery-date data corroborate NavSource. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A welded-steel amphibious assault craft built in 1944 at a working shipyard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel-powered small combatant of this type and period were engine exhaust and machinery-space thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in a compact hull volume. As an all-diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the asbestos-relevant systems are the diesel exhaust/manifold lagging, auxiliary machinery insulation, piping gaskets, and wiring insulation of a small engine-driven craft.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for this hull. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; austere landing craft carried far less insulation than fleet vessels, and nothing located documents which (if any) asbestos products were fitted on hull 1026. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

Opinion, No. 09-70592 (9th Cir., decided 2010-12-10) - Background section (1956 Albina employment; stipulations) and disposition
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Builder-level litigation documenting asbestos exposure at this hull's construction yard: claimant was the widow of James R. McAllister, a shipyard carpenter who in 1956 worked first for Willamette Iron & Steel and then for Albina (Portland, OR) before moving to Seattle in 1957; he died of mesothelioma in 2002. ALL PARTIES STIPULATED that his death was due to mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos during shipyard employment, and that any level of exposure can cause mesothelioma. The record further states 'WISCO admitted that Decedent was exposed to asbestos in its employ, and that Decedent had done essentially identical work for Albina as he did for WISCO.' Disposition: the Ninth Circuit GRANTED Albina's petition for review, rejecting the Benefits Review Board's simultaneous-evidence approach in favor of a sequential last-employer analysis, and held Lockheed Shipbuilding (the last employer) liable for death benefits under the LHWCA - an appellate ruling on employer allocation, not on whether exposure at Albina occurred.

Albina shipyard workers (1950s era documented; yard operated 1904-c.1971)
    Limitations
Yard-level litigation, not a hull record: documents a stipulated asbestos-caused death at Albina but the decedent's Albina employment was in 1956 - twelve years AFTER this hull's 1944 construction - and no vessel is named. The appellate holding concerns which employer pays, not whether Albina workers were exposed (the parties stipulated exposure; the court's reversal addressed allocation only). Reporter pagination confirmed as 627 F.3d at 1304 via DOL OALJ reference works; first page not independently verified (CourtListener lookup pending - fleet pacer throttled at session time). Does not establish materials aboard this hull, individual exposure, or legal eligibility.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS LCI(L)-1026 / LCI(R)-1026 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion index searched by hull designation variants (authenticated, 2026-09-29): zero results. CAVEAT: the RECAP docket index could not be queried - the fleet-wide request budget was momentarily spent (pacing stand-down, not a quota failure); logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; generic 'asbestos on Navy landing craft' material is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The docket-index gap is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). NARA deck logs (1944-45 coverage) and any LCI(R) conversion work packages are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
