    Limitations
Ship-specific history and specification record; contains no asbestos or material content. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation whose milestones track official records - the commissioning date is independently corroborated by the NARA Special List 44 deck-log window start (18 April 1944) and the builder table. Decommissioning and striking dates are not documented anywhere located. Philippine-era identity and final fate undocumented.

    Finding
NARA's official deck-log inventory lists 'LCI(L)(M)-1058' with a logbook date span of Apr. 18, 1944 - June 30, 1945, comprising 2 logbooks. This confirms NARA holds deck logs for this hull covering commissioning (18 April 1944) through the end of the Okinawa campaign window - a dated operational record establishing service in that interval, and the authoritative lead for reconstructing her movements, availabilities, and the February 1945 drydock noted in crew memoir.

Establishes existence and date span of the deck logs only - the logs themselves are textual records at NARA II (College Park) and do not appear in the digitized navy-online catalog list; page is a scan of the 1978 finding aid, not the logs. Log coverage endpoints are not commissioning or decommissioning dates. The '(M)' designation in the entry reflects the ship's latest known status at list compilation, not her 1944-45 configuration sequence. Contains no asbestos content. catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered and could not be independently fetched; SL44 scan verified via ACPL mirror image (narasl44/385.jpg, printed page 359).

    Limitations
Independent compilation confirming builder and disposition only. The table's 'Delivered' date of 1-Apr-44 precedes NavSource's launch date of 7-Apr-44 - internally inconsistent for this LCI series (sister hulls 1055-1060 all carry the same 1-Apr-44 figure), so it is treated as an approximate ledger marker, not a delivery date; milestone dates carried from NavSource/NARA. No asbestos content.

    Finding
Named crew member documents service aboard this hull: Frank D. Weaver of Garland, Texas, was assigned to the 1058 in February 1945 as a Seaman (Gunner's Mate striker), relieving Army mortar crews; the ship was then at Saipan awaiting Iwo Jima but instead 'went into drydock for propeller repairs,' then proceeded to Samar and to Okinawa, where operations consisted of shore bombardment, smoke-making, and firing at kamikazes. Weaver recounts that around 26 May 1945, anchored bow and stern off a small island north of Ie Shima (he believes Kure Shima) on picket/radio duty reporting low-flying kamikazes, a lone kamikaze dived at the ship and hit the water a few feet off the bow after the skipper (LTJG Purdy, or XO J. K. Pounders) ordered full speed ahead with both anchors out.

Crew member Frank D. Weaver; LCI(M)-1058 crew Feb-May 1945; drydock trades at the unnamed facility (Feb 1945)
    Limitations
Veterans-association memoir, not an official record - details are recollection (Weaver himself hedges the island name and which officer gave the order). He calls the ship 'LCI(M)' in February 1945 though the official reclassification to LCI(M) is dated 30 April 1945 (she was LCI(G) at that date; mortar crews were already embarked, consistent with the conversion being staged). The drydock-for-propeller-repairs episode explains her absence from the Iwo Jima campaign list but its location is not stated. No asbestos content. Newsletter scan is JS-rendered on yumpu; text verified via indexed extraction.

    Finding
Contemporaneous July 1945 documentation of this hull's builder: DeFoe Shipbuilding Co., sprawled on the Saginaw River at Bay City, Michigan, employed some 4,000 workers and produced nearly 135 naval vessels since Pearl Harbor, including forty-seven LCI(L) landing craft - of which this hull (yard no. 311) was one. The article describes the yard's roll-over construction method and documents the delivery route for Great Lakes-built craft: under their own power down Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Chicago, through the drainage canal and Illinois River to the Mississippi, reaching New Orleans (~2,100 miles) for drydocking, refit, and final Navy acceptance.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered steel landing craft built in early 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a small diesel landing craft of this type were: engine exhaust lagging and thermal insulation in the engine compartment; gaskets and valve packing in the fuel, lube-oil, and cooling systems; asbestos-containing electrical cable insulation and components (GAO: 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables'); and asbestos-containing cement and sheet products used in wartime construction. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and asbestos loading aboard an LCI was far lighter than aboard a steam-driven ship.

    Finding
GAO documented that thermal insulation was 'the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships'; that 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables'; that product specifications for thermal insulation were not changed to require asbestos-free materials until 1973; and that ships were still being delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978 - spanning this hull's entire 1944 construction and 1944-48 U.S. service era. The Navy's formal policy to eliminate asbestos where alternates existed dates to October 1975.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-1058 / LCI(G)-1058 / LCI(M)-1058 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched this session - opinion index 0 hits, docket index 0 hits for all designation variants (a class-context query for 'LCI asbestos navy veteran' returned one name collision, In re Silica Products Liability Litigation, MDL 1553 - unrelated). No law-firm or marketing content asserting asbestos aboard this specific hull was located either - the type is largely absent from the asbestos-ship listicle corpus. Decommissioning and striking are undocumented in every source found.
