LCI-351 class Landing Craft Infantry (Large): laid down 31 May 1944 at Defoe Ship Building Co., Bay City, MI; launched 16 June 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-1072 on 21 June 1944. Assigned Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Campaign table: Leyte operation - Leyte landings 28 and 29 November 1944; Borneo operation - Tarakan Island operation 27 April-5 May 1945, Balikpapan operation 26 June-6 July 1945. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown; two battle stars for WWII service; transferred to the State Department January 1947; sold to Chile 12 January 1947, named 'Grumete Tellez No.1'; deleted by the Chilean navy circa 1958; final disposition fate unknown. Class specifications: 236 t light / 264 t landing / 419 t loaded; 158'5.5" x 23'3"; 16 kt max / 14 kt continuous; complement 4 officers + 24 enlisted; troop capacity 6 officers + 182 enlisted; cargo 75 tons; five single 20mm guns; two sets of 4 GM diesels (printed '6051 series 71'), twin variable-pitch propellers, 2,320 shp; two diesel-drive 30 kW 120V DC generators; endurance 4,000 mi at 12 kt. Ship's crew (class spec 4 officers + 24 enlisted) plus embarked troops (up to ~188)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation (Turner Publishing unit history via NavSource), not a primary Navy record - the canonical per-hull public reference for this craft type. Decommissioning, striking, and final-disposition details are absent ('date unknown'/'fate unknown'). Complement and capacity figures are class specifications, not hull rosters. Leyte credit dates (28-29 November 1944) reflect the late reinforcement phase, not the October assault landings. The spec block's '6051 series 71' is a typographical error for GM 6-71 (see gaps). No asbestos or material-condition content.

    Finding
The hull's own action report for the Tarakan operation (1-3 May 1945), examined from the scanned images: routed via Commander Task Unit 78.1.13 / CTG 78.1 / CTF 78 / CTF 77, with 'ComLCI(L) Group Seventy-One's message reference 031636I' cited and copy to ComLCI(L)Gr. 71 - documenting the hull's assignment to LCI(L) Group 71. She 'participated in the amphibious assault on enemy held Japanese positions at Tarakan, Borneo, Dutch East Indies with 153 men and 15 officers of the 9th Australian Infantry Division.' On 1 May 1945 she arrived with Echelon O-1-F; at 1006 dispatched to the objective beach; at 1033 'moored starboard side to U.S.S. LST 590, beached on Red beach, and commenced unloading troops'; on completion cast off and retired at full speed to the transport area; no enemy fire observed during beaching or retirement. On 2 May she assisted salvage of the stranded USS LST 590 until a receding tide forced operations to cease; on 3 May 'U.S.S. LST 667, U.S.S. LCI(L) 1076, and this vessel succeeded in salvaging the U.S.S. LST 924.' No material or personnel casualties; the ship 'did not open fire on the enemy and no ammunition was expended'; no own-vessel hits observed.

    Limitations
Primary operational record examined in full (2-page scan). Documents the troop lift, the beach approach, and follow-on LST salvage work - proximity operations with material disturbance potential - but contains no material-condition, insulation, or asbestos data. Finding
NARA holds a digitized personnel record covering this hull's commissioned life: file unit 'LCI(L) 1072 - Muster Rolls' (NAID 120220845, RG 24), 115 scanned images via the Ancestry-NARA partnership; the first roll's forwarding sheet is dated 30 June 1944 (nine days after commissioning) and the last substantive document is a monthly change report for the period ending 1 September 1946 (NAVPERS 605a Rev. 2-46 form), BuPers-received stamp 10 September 1946, signed W.E. Glenn, Ens., USNR, Commanding Officer - establishing the craft was still in commission at September 1946. Unit-level operational records surfaced on the hull name: COM LCI(L) GR 71 war diaries for 26 June-30 September 1944 (NAID 139755427; cover page examined - 'Copy to: ComLCI(L)Flot 24' establishes Group 71 under Flotilla 24), 1-31 October 1944 (NAID 78671757), and 1 April-31 May 1945 (NAID 101753002); COM LCI(L) FLOT 24 war diaries for November 1944 (NAID 139779801, covering the Leyte credit window) and October 1945 (NAID 77595539); COMTASKUNIT 78.2.6 report on the Balikpapan assault landings 1-2 July 1945 (NAID 83557435); and the COM 7th PHIBFOR war diary 1 July-15 August 1945 (NAID 77491927).

Ship's crew (named individually in the muster rolls); embarked 9th Australian Infantry Division troops (see ev-02)
    Limitations
Personnel and unit-level records - they establish service dates, embarked units, and unit assignments but contain no material-condition or asbestos data. Muster rolls would answer hull-level crew strength but are not yet transcribed (the 4+24 figure remains a class spec). The unit war diaries are indexed to the hull by the catalog; per-hull pages were not individually examined beyond the Group 71 diary cover and the two action-report pages.

    historical_record
    Finding
NARA records Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-1072 spanning 21 June 1944 to 30 June 1945 - a dated operational record interval for this hull, opening on the documented commissioning date. Per the batch's PRIMARY note, log-coverage endpoints are not claimed as commissioning/decommissioning dates: the 30 June 1945 end falls inside the credited Balikpapan operation (26 June-6 July 1945), and the craft remained in commission into September 1946 (muster-roll evidence), so the surviving log run is partial and does not bound her service life.

    Finding
The LCI(L)-351 class is diesel-powered - two sets of four General Motors diesels (class documentation: GM 6-71 series; NavSource's page for this hull prints '6051 series 71'), four per shaft, ~2,320 shp, twin variable-pitch propellers, plus two diesel-driven 30 kW 120V DC ship's service generators - with no boilers or steam plant. Asbestos-relevant applications for a small welded-steel diesel craft of this era concentrate in engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, thermal/acoustic insulation in accommodation spaces and the deckhouse, deck coverings, and brake linings on the ramp winch.

HAER AK-52 documents sister hull LCI(L)-653's construction and post-Navy Alaska service.
