    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation citing the Turner Publishing LCI history, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but no DANFS entry exists for this hull to verify against. Spec-block armament lists 'six 5" rocket launchers' while the page's own US Navy photo captions describe Mk 7 launchers firing 4.5-inch rockets - caliber discrepancy carried in gaps and the correction row. Finding
US Navy photographs date 29 December 1944 place this hull 'pierside at San Francisco Navy Yard... after completing her conversion to a rocket-firing support craft' and 'off San Francisco... newly converted, but not yet redesignated, LCI(R)-1078.' Captions describe Mk 7 rocket launchers firing 4.5-inch rockets (maximum range 1,100 yards, elevating 25-40 degrees) fitted at the break of the forecastle and abaft her forward 20mm mounts. A chart of LCI(R) rocket targets for L-Day of Operation Iceberg (Okinawa invasion) assigns her to Task Group 52.20.2 with LCI(R)-651, -708, -1028, -1029, and -1030 - one of the six six-ship rocket task groups (TG 52.20) drawn from LCI Flotilla Sixteen for L-Day. 'San Francisco Navy Yard' was the wartime name of the Hunters Point facility (Atlas alias 'San Francisco Naval Shipyard').

    Limitations
Photographic placement documents presence and conversion completion at the San Francisco Navy Yard in late 1944; it does not document the work performed aboard or materials installed - a pierside photo is not a work record. Chart and captions via NavSource transcription of the Friedman design history; contains no asbestos content. The Hunters Point yard association rests on the yard's own documented alias, not on the caption text.

The ship's own anti-aircraft action report (CominCh form F-01 AA-1), forwarded 8 April 1945 by commanding officer Wayne H. Lewis, Lt. USNR: on 1 April 1945 'after completing fire support assignment in the invasion of Okinawa Jima' she proceeded at sundown to a night screening station in the East China Sea; at 0547, 2 April 1945, about 10 miles on bearing 120 (T) from Aguni Shima, Okinawa Gunto, a low-flying Japanese plane identified as a 'Hamp' approached on her starboard quarter headed for a minesweeper; her #5 and #2 20mm guns engaged (60 rounds expended, 100% of service allowance), the engine was seen to flare, and the plane crashed about 50 yards off her port beam and sank almost instantly - claimed as one 'sure' (assist). The report names the firing gunners (a coxswain at the #5 gun, an S1c at the #2 gun).

A second ship-specific file unit of her anti-aircraft action reports on CominCh form F-01 AA-1, covering actions off Okinawa Jima on 28 May and 3 June 1945. The digitized forms locate the ship at Makagusuku Wan, Okinawa for both actions; the 3 June report records one plane observed, one attacking own ship, one taken under fire with tracer-controlled fire (aircraft type and item-time fields handwritten, not cleanly machine-readable).

A diesel-powered amphibious landing craft built mid-1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but carries no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-typical applications aboard a WWII amphibious landing craft of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and interior fireproofing in the confined hull volume. Her documented late-1944 rocket conversion at San Francisco Navy Yard places her inside a yard with an Atlas-documented asbestos product list during a documented work event.

CourtListener was queried through the authenticated fleet helper on both indexes: opinion search '"LCI(L)-1078" OR "LCI(R)-1078" OR "LCI 1078"' returned 0 results; opinion search '"USS LCI" asbestos' returned 0 results; RECAP docket search on the hull variants returned 0 results / 0 documents - a verified negative on the litigation side. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (mesothelioma.com, mesothelioma.net, asbestos-ships.com and similar pages asserting asbestos at Defoe Shipbuilding and aboard LCIs without primary sourcing) - excluded by source policy.
