C. L. Bryner USNR in command; assigned Asiatic-Pacific Theater, LC(FF) Flotilla Twenty-Three (LCDR R. H. Brazeal USN), LC(FF) Group Sixty-Nine (LT T. T. Brooks USN), LC(FF) Division One Hundred Thirty-Nine; occupation duty in the Far East 20 September to 5 December 1945; decommissioned date unknown; laid up Reserve Fleet, Pacific, March 1946; struck from Naval Register date unknown; final disposition fate unknown. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; its history text is credited to a 1995 Turner Publishing veterans' volume. Milestone dates match uboat.net's independent entry. The flotilla assignment (Group 69 / Division 139) conflicts with the NHHC 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization listing (Group 68 / Division 136) - carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos or material content.

Crew under Lt.(jg) Bryner; flotilla staff (1 May 1945)
    Limitations
Ship-specific for identity and assignment only; contains no asbestos or material content. Conflicts with NavSource/Turner on intermediate echelon (Group 68/Division 136 here vs Group 69/Division 139 in NavSource) - one or both may reflect a reassignment between redesignation (Jan 1945) and 1 May 1945, or a source error; unresolved, carried in gaps. The list does not mark 1083 with an (FF) or (GF) flag note though sister 1080 carries (FF).

    Finding
NARA's logbook holdings index lists 'LCI(L)(FF)-1083' with coverage 8/24/1944 - 6/30/1945 - a dated operational deck-log span held in RG 24 Entry 118 at College Park. The span opens on the same date NavSource/uboat.net give for commissioning (24 Aug 1944) and covers the first ten months of service including the LC(FF) redesignation period.

Per batch convention the coverage endpoints are not claimed as commissioning/decommissioning dates (though the start date coincides with the documented commissioning date). Post-June-1945 logs - covering occupation duty, decommissioning, and 1946 reserve-fleet entry - are not listed in this index.

Separately, the TracesOfWar index names LC(FF) 1083 on three pages of a scanned 'Occupation report Kure - Hiroshima - Matsuyama', placing the craft in the Inland Sea (Kure/Hiroshima/Matsuyama) occupation force.

officialmilitaryribbons.com is a private reproduction of the Navy eligibility list, not the official document itself; TracesOfWar is a secondary index whose report pages are image scans (Cloudflare-gated, not independently read this session) - the Kure-area presence is corroborated-by-index, not read verbatim. Locator

    Finding
The Defoe yard build list assigns this hull yard number 336, delivered August 1944, and records disposition 'Sunk as target 1956' - the same entry recorded for Defoe-built sisters LCI(L) 1080, 1081, and 1082. This is the only located source asserting a specific final disposition for the hull.

    Limitations
Single secondary source (shipyard-data compilation), not a primary disposal record; directly conflicts with NavSource's 'final disposition, fate unknown'. No sinking location, date, ordnance, or disposal-contract documentation located; 1956 target sinking would predate modern ACM-handling rules but no hazmat/disposal survey record exists. Carried as the best available disposition claim with the conflict flagged in gaps.

    Finding
Class context: the LCI(L)-1-class entry documents the type as a ~158-160 ft, ~387-ton-full-load steel landing craft with GM diesel engines on twin variable-pitch screws, complement ~3 officers + 21 enlisted, troop capacity ~188 - ocean-going infantry landing craft of exactly this hull's design family. The same index lists LC(FF)-1079 through LC(FF)-1083 as a 1943-44 flotilla-flagship group, corroborating that the 1083 hull was among the LCI(L)s converted to carry flotilla command staff.

Class-level document, not a hull record; figures describe the LCI(L) design family generally (1083's NavSource spec block shows 419 t loaded, complement 4+24, 2,320 shp for the later 351 series). Confirms the type and the flagship conversion program; contains no asbestos content.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A 1944-built Navy diesel landing craft sits squarely inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine-room thermal insulation and exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and insulation/fireproofing of accommodation spaces in the confined hull. Because the plant is diesel with no boilers or steam lines, the dominant steam-vessel pathway (boiler and steam-line lagging) does not apply; the diesel-exhaust and machinery-insulation pathways do.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, work package, or survey located for LCI(L)-1083/LC(FF)-1083. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. Small landing craft carried far less insulation than steam combatants - the inference applies to a materially smaller installed base.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-46, reserve to claimed 1956 disposal).

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lci-l-1083-01 through -13b
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-1083 / LC(FF)-1083 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned count 0 on both indexes for every name variant queried - opinions (type=o) for 'LCI(L)-1083', 'LC(FF)-1083', 'LCI-1083'/'LCFF-1083'/'LCI(L)(FF)-1083', and dockets/RECAP (type=r) for 'LCI(L)-1083' OR 'LC(FF)-1083'. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing material (mesothelioma.com, mesothelioma.net, mesotheliomalawyercenter.org, leewdavis.com, mesowatch.org, asbestos-ships.com) asserting asbestos use at the Defoe yard or aboard LCI-type craft without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. No museum custodian exists for this hull (disposed); the restored sister LCI-713's project publishes no asbestos/abatement disclosure located in public sources.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull is sunk/disposed with no surveyable remains. The litigation negative covers only CourtListener's indexes (opinions + RECAP dockets as searched 2026-09-29); state-court and non-digitized filings are out of scope. Deck logs, Defoe build/inspection records, and any disposal-contract or target-preparation records are undigitized archival leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
