- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation sourcing the USS LCI Association's Turner Publishing history, not a primary registry; milestone dates (launch, commission, sale) are stated without document-level citation. Contains no asbestos content. Theater/flotilla assignment does not by itself establish participation in any named operation; the deck-log series is the primary record of actual movements.

[3]ShipbuildingHistory (Tim Colton compilation), Defoe Shipbuilding Co. yard list - hull 337 = LCI(L)-1084 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Defoe yard list table, hull 337 row (columns: O/N, Name, Customer, Type, GT, LOA, Delivered, Notes)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Defoe Shipbuilding yard list records hull number 337 as LCI(L)-1084, US Navy landing craft, 236d tons, 158 ft LOA, in the August 1944 contract batch, with the note 'struck 1951.' Corroborates the NavSource build record and supplies a 1951 striking year consistent with the April 1951 sale.

- Limitations
- Secondary compiled yard list, not a primary registry. The table's 'Delivered' column carries contract-batch month markers ('1 Aug 1944' for the whole August group), not per-hull event dates - granular dates come from NavSource. 'Struck 1951' is a notes-field summary, not a register entry; NavSource records the striking date as unknown. No asbestos content.

[4]National Archives catalog, series 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1978' (NAID 594258, RG 24) - deck-log file unit listed for LCI(L)-1084 covering 25 August 1944 - 30 June 1945 [other_primary]

- NARA deck-log inventory entry for LCI(L)-1084; series NAID 594258, RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Navy deck-log inventory lists a file unit for this hull: 'LCI(L)-1084,' coverage 8/25/1944 - 6/30/1945. This dated operational record establishes commissioned service within that window and is the primary-source lead for her actual movements, availabilities, and any yard periods in the interval. The coverage start coincides with the NavSource commissioning date (25 August 1944); the coverage end (30 June 1945) is a catalog breakpoint, not a decommissioning date.

- Limitations
- Archival lead, partially verified: the coverage line comes from NARA's deck-log inventory for this hull, but the NARA catalog is JS-rendered and its records API returned the app shell rather than data on 2026-09-29 - the file-unit NAID and digitization status were not independently pulled. Log coverage endpoints are not commissioning/decommissioning evidence. Deck logs document movements and events, not materials - no asbestos content expected.

- Locator
- ships-lc.html, 'LCI(L) -- Landing Craft, Infantry (Large)' table, LCI(L)-1084 row
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The wartime U.S. Navy inventory (HyperWar transcription) lists LCI(L)-1084 in the 1942-44 build group with no loss notation - corroborating that the hull entered the wartime fleet and was not a wartime loss. Sister-hull notations in the same table show the inventory does record losses and special dispositions (e.g., Lend-Lease transfers, sunk-by-date entries) where they occurred.

- Finding type

- Finding
- A diesel-powered landing craft built July-August 1944 at a Navy contract yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were thermal insulation of machinery spaces, diesel engine exhaust lagging, pipe-system gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation - in a 158-foot hull where embarked troops and crew lived inches from machinery. As a pure diesel plant she carried no boilers or steam turbine - the boiler/main-steam lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply, and the volume of installed insulation was far smaller than a steam ship's.

- Finding
- The Navy/USPHS wartime health survey of pipe-covering operations documents that 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels is amosite' - South African asbestos fiber - used as felt and pipe covering for its thermal conductivity, light weight, and refractoriness, alongside asbestos cloth and asbestos cement. Investigators X-rayed 1,074 pipe coverers at two Government navy yards and two Navy contract yards during the 1944 construction window and measured dust counts across seven pipe-covering operations; three men (all 20+-year pipe coverers) showed asbestosis. This hull was built in exactly that window at exactly that yard category (Navy contract yard), in August 1944.

- Pipe coverers and insulation trades at Navy yards and Navy contract yards (wartime)
- Limitations
- Era/program documentation, not a hull record: the surveyed yards are anonymized (A, B, C, D) and Defoe Shipbuilding is not identified among them. Documents asbestos as standard Navy-vessel construction material and elevated dust in pipe-covering trades - does not establish materials aboard, exposure aboard, or any condition of this specific hull. PubMed record confirmed via index search; automated fetch of pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov returns a cookie challenge to non-browser agents.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-1084 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero hits in both the opinion index and the RECAP docket index across all hull variants ('LCI(L)-1084', 'LCI-1084', 'LCI(L) 1084', 'LCIL-1084') on 2026-09-29 - a genuine negative, as the hull string is too unique for name collisions. The only 'asbestos' material surfacing for the builder yard is law-firm marketing content (mesothelioma.net, mesothelioma.com, mesotheliomalawyercenter.org, mesowatch.org Defoe yard pages) asserting asbestos use without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era and no deconstruction/material record was located. The 1944-45 deck logs (NARA) are the untapped primary lead. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
