    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (history credited to the USS LCI National Association's Turner Publishing volume), not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but see gaps for two conflicts (Group 41/Division 82 listing vs. the ship's own action report placing her in LCI(M) Group 55 / Mortar Division 7; struck date 'unknown' vs secondary '1946'). Finding
The ship's own action report, dated 20 April 1945, Commanding Officer USS LCI(G) 1088 (W. M. Perry, Lt.(jg), USNR) to Commander in Chief U.S. Fleet: covers 'the operation of LCI(G) 1088 during the initial attack on Okinawa Shima on 1 April 1945.' Target objective: a beach section adjacent to the circular reef off the village of Sobe, four miles southwest of Zanpa Misaki on the western side of Okinawa; mission to destroy beach defenses 'by intensive bombardment with 4.2 chemical mortar high explosive projectiles and the use of 40 mm fire on spot targets,' per the 'Preferred Plan' ComPhibGrp 4 No. A405-45 Attack Order. LCI(G) 1088 was attached to Mortar Division 7; firing run began ~0805 on signal from division guide LCI(G) 810; mortar fire opened at 2,500 yards, continued to ~1,800 yards where the reef halted the division, then rapid fire ~10 minutes until the first assault wave entered the fire zone. Expended 375 rounds of 4.2-inch HE mortar and 432 rounds of 40mm; all fire placed within the target area; no ordnance casualties or misfires. Enemy return fire 'very light' - three mortar-type projectiles ~40 yards off the port bow; no hits on the ship, no personnel casualties. Endorsement chain documents assignment: via ComLCIGrp 55 - first endorsement on LCI(M) GROUP 55 letterhead, 11 May 1945, R. E. Hunnicutt, Lt. Comdr. USNR - and second endorsement by ComLCIFlot FOURTEEN (CTG 52.24), 30 May 1945, Theodore W. Rimer (CAPT), subject styled 'LCI(M) 1088 - ACTION REPORT - OKINAWA Operation,' noting 'the performance of all mortar units was notably excellent'; further endorsements ComPhibGrp FOUR (CTF 53) 6 June, ComPhibGrp ONE (CTG 51.19) 15 June, ComPhibForPac (CTF 51) 8 July, CincPac 23 July 1945.

    Limitations
Ship-specific operational record; contains no asbestos or material content - establishes combat employment and command/organization facts only. Notable: the hull fired the mortar mission on 1 April 1945 while still designated LCI(G) - the 4.2-inch mortar battery was installed and operational before the formal 30 April 1945 LCI(M) redesignation (endorsements already style the unit LCI(M) Group 55 and the ship 'LCI(M) 1088'). Finding
The commissioning muster-roll cover sheet (NAVPERS 605, from the LCI(L) 1088 file unit) is captioned 'MUSTER ROLL OF THE CREW OF THE U.S.S. LCI(L) 1088,' dated 'On the 6th day of September, 1944,' forwarded 7 September 1944 from 'USS LCI(L) 1088, Bay City, Michigan,' and annotated with the service span 'Com. 9-6-44 to 4-16-46.' Certified by E. A. Lindley, Ens., USNR, Executive Officer; approved by W. M. Perry, Lt.(jg), USNR, Commanding Officer - the same officer who signed the April 1945 Okinawa action report. The three designation-specific file units document the crew across the LCI(L), LCI(G), and LCI(M) configurations.

Personnel records only - no asbestos or material content. The cover sheet establishes the commissioning date/place, the commanding and executive officers, and the crew's existence as a population; individual roster pages were not transcribed for this record. The '9-6-44 to 4-16-46' span corroborates the NavSource decommissioning date of 16 April 1946.

    Finding
NARA records Navy deck logs for this hull under the combined designation LCI(L)(G)(M)-1088, with coverage 6 September 1944 (the commissioning date) through 30 June 1945 (the close of the Okinawa campaign). This dated operational record establishes service in that interval - log coverage endpoints are not claimed as commissioning/decommissioning dates (commissioning is independently established by the muster-roll cover sheet at ev-03). The hull is absent from the NARA published list of fully digitized deck logs, so the logs themselves remain at Archives II, College Park, in the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations series.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered LCI-351-class landing craft built August-September 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard diesel amphibious craft of this period were thermal insulation around machinery, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. She carried eight GM 6051-series-71 diesel engines in two quad sets on twin shafts - a diesel plant with no steam system, so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the confined-hull diesel-craft exposure dynamic applies instead.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The class spec block's '2-inch plastic splinter protection on gun turrets, conning tower and pilot house' was NOT an asbestos product: wartime 'plastic armor' / Plastic Protective Plating (PPP) was 'made of asphalt and gravel or similar material' (Preload Corp. v. United States, describing the Maritime Commission's 1944 shipset program) - a bituminous matrix impregnated with stones, invented to replace steel armor (NavWeaps). The splinter-protection material on this class is therefore documented as asphaltic, not fibrous-asbestos.
