    Defoe construction trades (Aug-Sep 1944); ship's company 28-70 depending on configuration (1944-45); embarked troops; post-war occupation-era crew
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone and disposition data generally track official records but decommission/struck dates are unrecorded here ('date unknown') and shipbuildinghistory.com conflicts (see ev-04 and gaps). The underway-off-Okinawa photo is captioned 'LCI(R)-1089' while her documented designation at that date was LCI(M) - a caption wrinkle, not a designation change (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's official logbook inventory lists a deck-log holding for 'LCI(L)(G)(M)-1089' covering 9/9/1944 - 6/30/1945 (ship-number list, PDF p. 16): National Archives holds this hull's logs (RG 24, Entry 118 series coverage for the period), documenting in-scope wartime service from commissioning through the Okinawa campaign window. These are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates.

    ship's company during the log-coverage window (1944-09-09 to 1945-06-30)
    Limitations
Inventory-level record only: establishes that deck logs exist in NARA custody covering the stated window; the logs themselves are not digitized in the SL-44 context and their contents were not reviewed. The 6/30/1945 end date is the inventory cutoff common to the list, not the end of her service. Digitization status in the National Archives Catalog could not be verified this session (catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered; API requires a key). No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Official-derived designation corroboration for this hull across all three configurations: 'LCI(L)-1089' appears in the LCI(L) roster (1942-44 commission group); 'LCI(G)-1089' is listed 1944-45 with the note 'Converted to Landing Craft, Infantry (Mortar) -- LCI(M)'; and 'LCI(M)-1088-1089' appears in the 1945 mortar-group block. Independently corroborates the NavSource designation chain.

    Locator
    Defoe yard table, hull-342 row
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The Defoe yard's own production table lists hull 342 as 'LCI(L) 1089,' US Navy landing craft, 236d tons / 158 ft, delivered 1-Sep-44, disposition 'Struck 1946.' Confirms the builder attribution (Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City MI) against NavSource, and supplies the builder hull number.

    Limitations
Secondary compilation; the row's 'delivered 1-Sep-44' precedes NavSource's 5-Sep-44 launch date - likely a different milestone definition or a table slip, unresolved (see gaps). Its 'Struck 1946' conflicts with NavSource's 'date unknown' (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
A crew member's wartime materials (letters, photos, a poem) described in the LCI veterans'-association newsletter place this hull at Hutchinson Creek, Florida Island, Solomons, on 19 February 1945 (ship nicknamed 'The Gravel Gertie'); document Amphibious Training Base, Coronado, California en route to the Pacific; and restate the Okinawa assault/occupation and September 1945 Nagasaki-area minesweeping service, with photographs of Hiroshima taken after the war. Ens. Gerber's discharge was 2 March 1946.

    Limitations
Veterans'-association newsletter, not an official source - used as corroborating context for the service narrative only. Individual-crew detail is anecdotal; the nickname and Solomons photo-date rest on family-held materials described by the editor. No asbestos content; no exposure claim is made for Ens. Gerber or any individual.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built August-September 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine-room and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and accommodation/habitability insulation. As an all-diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her 158-ft hull carried a materially smaller insulated-piping volume than a steam combatant.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-1089. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-47).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-1089 / LCI(G)-1089 / LCI(M)-1089 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched on the ship's exact name and all hull-designation variants in both opinions (type=o) and dockets (type=r) - zero results in each; secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm 'asbestos aboard' page specific to this hull.
