    Finding
NARA inventories Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-17 covering 1 March 1944 through 30 June 1945 - in-scope wartime service documentation for this hull (Anzio aftermath through the Mediterranean departure and into the Pacific assignment; the window ends two weeks before the LCI(G)-17 redesignation). Log-coverage dates are inventory dates, not commissioning or decommissioning dates. No separate LCI(G)-17 log entry appears in Special List 44.

The ship's own contemporaneous war diary: for January 1944, USS LCI(L)#17 is 'flagship of LCI(L) Flotilla One' (Eighth Amphibious Force), moored at Bizerte, Tunisia 1-9 January, operating under Commander Northwest African Waters Operation Order 9-43; on 10 January she embarked Commander O. F. Gregor, USN (OTC) and the LCI(L) Flotilla One staff and sailed with a 16-LCI force (LCIs 3, 4, 10, 17, 19, 32, 39, 40, 47, 189, 190, 191, 194, 219, 220, 231 plus SC and PC escorts) for Nisida/Naples - the Anzio staging period. Entries signed by H. G. Stender, LT., USNR, commanding.

    Finding
HAER documentation of the type via preserved sister LCI(L)-713 (LCI-351 group): welded 1/4-inch steel plate construction to a Bureau of Ships standard design; engine room on the lower deck containing four pairs of General Motors 6-71 diesel engines connected to two shafts and variable-pitch propellers; approximately 1,051 ships of the type built in ten shipyards during WWII. The written data pages contain no insulation-materials detail and no mention of asbestos.

    Limitations
Documents the LCI-351 group sister, not LCI(L)-17 (LCI-1 group - earlier square-conn/side-ramp configuration); hull form and diesel machinery architecture are common across groups. Absence of asbestos detail in a 3-page data sheet is descriptive silence, not a finding about materials aboard any hull.

    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built September-November 1942 at New York Shipbuilding sits inside that yard's documented asbestos-use era and product set (thermal block insulation, magnesia, Transite panels, gaskets, packing, asbestos-coated welding rod, wire insulation, felts) and inside the wartime period when asbestos materials were standard in naval-vessel construction. Era-standard applications aboard a landing craft of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery/engine-room insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-17. Names era-standard applications and the builder yard's documented product set, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Small shallow-draft amphibious craft carried less installed insulation than combatant steam vessels - inference may overstate actual fit-out.

Documents the regulatory backdrop of this hull's construction period: government and Navy awareness of asbestos hazards in shipbuilding across 1900-1970, including the wartime-era minimum safety requirements applied to contract shipyards - the category covering New York Shipbuilding, where this hull was built.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming LCI(L)-17 or LCI(G)-17 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinions index: zero results across all name variants ('LCI(L)-17', 'LCI(G)-17', 'LCI-17', 'LCI(L) 17', 'LCI(G) 17', 'LCI 17'); CourtListener docket index: zero results for the hyphenated variants, and the spaced-variant docket query returned hits consisting of non-vessel name collisions (e.g., Plagens v. Deckard, N.D. Ohio 1:20-cv-02744, a securities class action matching the 'LCI' acronym) - no qualifying vessel-related docket identified. No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NHHC slug checks return 404); no NHHC photo page; no hull-specific page at the LCI National Association site. The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced for LCI-type vessels generally is law-firm marketing content - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's undigitized deck logs (RG 24 Entry 118), New York Shipbuilding work orders, and any post-sale conversion or breaking records are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
