- Documented for this hull: LCI-1 class Landing Craft Infantry (Large); laid down September 1942 at George Lawley & Sons, Neponset, MA; launched October 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-212 on 20 October 1942. Assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater with credited campaigns: North African occupation - Tunisian operations 27 March - 9 July 1943; Sicilian occupation 9-15 July 1943; West coast of Italy operations - Anzio-Nettuno advanced landing 22 January - 19 February 1944; Invasion of Normandy 6-25 June 1944. Four battle stars for WWII service. Decommissioned and leased to the United Kingdom 31 October 1944; returned to US Naval custody 17 May 1946; struck from the Naval Register in 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission at Claremont, VA for disposal (PDX-225, 27 September 1946); sold 13 November 1947; 'Final Disposition, fate unknown.' Photo captions (US Army Signal Corps photo #176486, in US National Archives collections) place her among LCI(L)s massed at Bizerte, Tunisia, 6 July 1943 loading troops for the Sicily invasion, and among 'LCI Flotillas Two and Four' sailing to North Africa with the Third Infantry Division; a winter 1943-44 Pozzuoli photo identifies her among seven LCIs with LCI(L)-215 and -231. Page credits the Turner Publishing 'USS LCI Landing Craft Infantry Vol. II' (1995) as history source. Specs: disp. 236 t light / 264 landing / 419 loaded; l. 158'5.5"; b. 23'3"; two sets of 4 GM 6051-series-71 diesels, 4 per shaft, 2,320 shp, twin variable-pitch propellers; 16 kts max / 14 kts continuous; complement 4 officers + 24 enlisted; troops 6 officers + 182 enlisted; five single 20mm + two .50 cal; call sign NBKM.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's logbook inventory lists exactly one holding span for LCI(L)-212: 10/1/1944 - 10/31/1944 - the vessel's final month under US flag, ending the day she was decommissioned and leased to the United Kingdom (31 Oct 1944). Anomalous relative to sister hulls: nearby transferred sisters carry multi-year spans (e.g., LCI(L)-213: 10/28/1942-12/20/1943 and 1/14/1944-8/31/1944). Her October 1942 - September 1944 US-service logs - the period covering North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and Normandy - are NOT in the inventoried holdings for this hull. Whether the October 1944 volume is digitized in the National Archives Catalog could not be confirmed this session (catalog is JS-rendered; the online digitized-log index is name-indexed and lists no numbered landing craft).

- Limitations
- Inventory confirms existence/span of holdings, not content - the log itself was not reviewed. The single-month span likely reflects the October 1944 custody transfer, but the inventory does not state why earlier US-service logs are absent (lost, never transferred, separately held, or not yet inventoried). RN-era logs (Nov 1944 - May 1946) would be UK holdings outside this inventory.

- Locator
- usslci.org/combat-awards/ - citation block for 'Quartermaster Second Class Stanley James Sharp, Jr.'
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- A transcribed official award citation documents a crew member's heroism aboard this hull: 'Quartermaster Second Class Stanley James Sharp, Jr., United States Navy - For extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action against the enemy while serving on board the U.S.S. LCI (L) TWO HUNDRED TWELVE (LCI(L)-212), during an enemy air raid on the harbor of Palermo, Sicily, on 1 August 1943. When hostile bombs closely straddled his ship, setting fire to gasoline stored on the dock to which she was moored, and to ammunition loaded in a nearby merchant vessel, Quartermaster Second Class Sharp was seriously wounded by flying bomb fragments. Although in great pain and bleeding profusely, he manned the helm and engine room telegraphs and courageously remained at his station over an hour without revealing the extent of his injuries until his ship was anchored in a safer berth.' This places the ship at Palermo, Sicily, on 1 August 1943, moored alongside a dock during an enemy air raid.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The association's memorial roster carries an 'LCI(L) 212' block listing: theater 'Normandy'; 'KIA Peter Edmond James'; 'KIA Edward James Martin'; and a 'Bermuda 2/27/1943' marker followed by names J. A. Ryman, W. A. Light, and Stafford - before the next block (LCI(L) 213) begins. The 'Bermuda 2/27/1943' marker also appears under sister hulls (LCI(L) 213, 218, 219, 232) and a 'FLOTILLA 2 STAFF' section - consistent with a shared Flotilla 2 loss event en route to the Mediterranean in February 1943.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The official USCG history documents the LCI(L) flotilla operations at Sicily and Salerno in which this hull's theater system took part; its Appendix B list of Coast Guard-manned ships entitled to stars does not include LCI(L)-212 (full-text check, zero occurrences of '212'). Photo captions associate the ship with 'LCI Flotillas Two and Four'; absence from the CG-manned list is consistent with a Navy-crewed hull, though the volume itself never names her.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious landing craft built in 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-insulation era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type and period were engine and diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her insulating load was correspondingly lighter than a steam combatant's.

CourtListener opinion search on the canonical spelling "LCI(L)-212" returned zero results (authenticated HTTP 200, verified negative); "USS LCI(L)" also returned zero. Variant spellings ('LCI-212', 'LCI 212', 'LCI(L) 212') and the docket search could not be run to completion - attempts returned the fleet-wide pacing stand-down (shared ~114/hr budget spent); logged as blocked, not as a negative result.
