Official Navy tabulation for this hull: 'LCI(L) 222 (ex-APY222)' - built by George Lawley & Son, Neponset, Mass.; keel laid 17 Oct 42; launched 20 Nov 42; date of first commission 3 Dec 42. The class spec table for LCI(L) 1-350 gives 158'6" length overall, 23'8" extreme beam, 387 tons full-load displacement, 14.4-knot trial speed, and 4 x 20mm AA mounts. The 'ex-APY222' tag preserves the pre-launch APY transport-series designation applied to the type before the LCI(L) designation was adopted.

Contemporary official compilation (published April 1945) - highest-authority source in this record for construction milestones. Its launch date (20 Nov 42) conflicts with NavSource/Wikipedia's 29 Nov 42 - see gaps; the official date is carried. NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 17 October 1942 at George Lawley & Sons Corp., Neponset, MA; launched 29 November 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-222 3 December 1942, LTjg. H. S. Thompson, USNR, in command (May 1945). Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as LCI Flotilla Five flagship (CDR. M. V. Milton), LCI Group Fifteen (LCDR. E.S. Dulcan), LCI Division Thirty. Campaigns: New Georgia Group operations - New Georgia-Rendova-Vangunu occupation 1-4 July 1943, Vella Lavella occupation 15 August 1943; Treasury Island-Bougainville operation - Treasury Island landing 27 October 1943, occupation and defense of Cape Torokina 3-4 December 1943. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register 5 June 1946; earned two battle stars; sold 7 November 1946; final disposition unknown. Spec block: GM 6051-series-71 diesel quad-packs (two sets of 4, four per shaft), GM main reduction gears, twin variable-pitch props, 2,320 shp, two 30kW 120V DC ship's service generators; complement 4 officers/24 enlisted; troop capacity 6 officers/182 enlisted; five single 20mm guns. Photo captions place the hull loading New Zealand 3rd Division troops 25 October 1943 for the Mono Island landing, beached at Mono Island 27 October 1943, and at Florida Island B.S.I. 30 April 1944 for the Iron Bottom Sound plaque dedication at Lyons Point (NARA photo 80-G-240319).

NARA's official deck-log inventory lists one holding line for this hull: 'LCI(L)-222 ... 5/1/1944 ... 6/30/1945' - Navy deck logs held covering May 1944 through June 1945. These are log-coverage dates in the Record Group 24 inventory, not commissioning or decommissioning dates: the hull commissioned 3 December 1942 and was still operating in July 1945 (see ev-05), so both earlier and later log material falls outside this inventoried coverage.

    Limitations
The inventory confirms holdings, not content - the log volumes are not digitized (this hull is absent from NARA's online deck-log index) and were not read. A log listing establishes the hull's existence and operating period, not conditions aboard; contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
NARA-held photographs place this hull in the Solomon Islands during 1943-44 - including the 30 April 1944 Iron Bottom Sound plaque dedication at Lyons Point, Florida Island - corroborating the Solomons operating record independently of the NavSource narrative. These are physical-presence documentation, not work or material records.

Thompson, USNR, commanding - corroborating NavSource's Thompson command attribution and documenting continued Pacific operations two weeks after the NARA-inventoried log coverage ends (30 June 1945). Entry's 'History' line agrees with NavSource: sold 7 November 1946.

    Finding
A 1942-built LCI(L) sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but its propulsion profile differs from steam vessels: two sets of four GM 6051-series-71 diesel engines drive twin variable-pitch props - there is no boiler and no steam plant, so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a Navy amphibious craft of this period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery thermal/acoustic insulation in the confined engine room, flange and valve gaskets, machinery packing, electrical insulation, and period deck coverings and adhesives. Wartime construction at George Lawley & Sons (1942) falls inside the Navy's documented asbestos-insulation era (see ev-07).

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-222. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. No manufacturer attribution for this hull. LCI(L)s were small craft (~387 t full load) with correspondingly smaller installed material scope than large combatants.

    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LCI(L)-222 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero hits across the exact name and spelling variants in the opinion index ("LCI(L)-222", "LCI-222", "LCI(L) 222", "LCIL-222", "LCI 222") and zero for "LCI(L)-222" in the RECAP docket index - classified no result, not merely absent. The remaining docket-variant query ("LCI-222") returned one hit, classified name collision: the match is OCR noise inside a 502-page scanned exhibit in Reed v. United States (E.D. Tenn. 3:18-cv-00201, an FTCA matter) - not the vessel and not asbestos litigation naming the hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - wartime small-craft construction is consistent with retained era materials. The hull's post-sale fate is unknown, so no disposal-phase hazmat record exists to find. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
