LCI-1 class Landing Craft Infantry (Large): laid down 26 October 1942 at George Lawley & Sons Corp., Neponset, MA; launched 3 December 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-225, 12 December 1942. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, LCI Flotilla Seven, LCI Group Nineteen, with campaign credits: Eastern New Guinea (Lae 4-6 September 1943; Finschhafen 22 September 1943), Bismarck Archipelago (Cape Gloucester 26-27 December 1943), Hollandia (21-25 April 1944), Western New Guinea (Biak 27-28 May and 29 May-1 June 1944; Morotai 15 September 1944), Luzon (Lingayen Gulf 9 January 1945; Lubang Island 1 March 1945), Manila Bay-Bicol (Zambales-Subic Bay 29-31 January 1945; Mariveles 15 February 1945; Corregidor 16 February 1945), Consolidation of Southern Philippines (Zamboanga 10 March 1945; Saoroc Point, Basilan 16 March 1945; Cotabato/Polloc Harbor 17-19 April 1945), and Borneo (Balikpapan 1 July 1945). Reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Rocket), USS LCI(R)-225, 10 July 1945. Decommissioned, date unknown. Struck from the Naval Register 12 March 1946. Transferred to the Maritime Commission 19 May 1948 for disposal; final disposition unknown. Earned eight battle stars. NARA photograph caption: LCI(L)-225 and LCI(L)-226 landing in April 1944 at Humboldt Bay, Hollandia, carrying units of the U.S. Army 41st Infantry Division (NARA ID 17572, Local ID 111-ADC-3769).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained private archive, not a government publication; build dates here agree with the Lawley yard table and uboat.net, and the Morotai/Zambales/Lingayen reports in the NARA Catalog independently document her 1944-45 operations. The 10 July 1945 reclassification date is contradicted by the ship's own action-report letterheads reading 'USS LCI(R) 225' in January 1945 (see ev-04, ev-05) - the conversion preceded the administrative redesignation; uboat.net gives 15 July 1945. 'Decommissioned, date unknown' and 'fate unknown' are this source's own admissions. Contains no asbestos information.

An inventory entry, not the logs themselves: it establishes that one deck logbook for this coverage window exists in NARA custody (RG 24, College Park) but says nothing about its content; the logs are not digitized in the National Archives Catalog's online deck-log list. Coverage begins 20 January 1945 - earlier logbooks (commissioning through the Lingayen operation) are not in this inventory. The ship-generated action report, letterhead 'USS LCI(R) 225' dated 18 January 1945, documents the Lingayen Gulf operation: assigned to Task Unit 78.5.8(A), Blue Beach Attack Group, San Fabian Attack Force; departed Sansapor, New Guinea 30 December 1944 in TG 78.5. On 8 January an enemy plane dive-bombed a transport in the formation and the ship's 40mm expended 6 rounds. At dawn 9 January she took station 500 yards shoreward of the Line of Departure, third of six rocket ships from starboard, ran in at 5 knots on course 137 degrees True, and fired twelve 44-rocket salvos of 4.5-inch rockets (eight covering the beach to 400 yards depth at 20-second intervals beginning 0921, four into the area behind to 900 yards), ceasing as the first LVT wave passed. She stood by off Blue Beach, engaged enemy aircraft on 9 and 12 January, laid smoke screens over the transport area 10-11 January, and posted armed deck guards against enemy swimmers and boats. Part III lists her armament as 44 rocket launchers each holding 12 4.5-inch rockets, one 40mm gun, three 20mm machine guns, and two twin .50-cal machine guns; 12 of 528 loaded rockets failed to fire and were disposed of in deep water; no gun casualties.

The ship-generated action report, letterhead 'USS LCI(R) 225' dated 30 January 1945, documents the Zambales-area landing: the ship was assigned to Task Unit 78.3.8 providing close support for the XI Corps landing (38th Infantry Division with an RCT of the 24th) on Blue Beach; departed Leyte 1100 on 25 January 1945 convoying via Surigao Strait, the Mindanao and Sulu Seas, and the South China Sea; on Baker day (29 January) proceeded toward the beach with LCS(L)-27 to port and LCI(R)-226 and LCS(L)-49 to starboard; no hostile fire was observed and, per orders, no rockets were fired. Endorsements in the file (Commander LCS(L) Flotilla One aboard USS LCI(L)-778, 3 March 1945; Commander Task Group 78.3, Amphibious Group Nine, 9 April 1945) both address her as 'LCI(R) 225'.

Class-design context for the LCI(L) type: 923 LCI(L)s built by ten shipyards to a common design; the first 350 boats (which include hull 225) were 158.5 ft and 216 tons light; variants included LC(FF), LCI(D), LCI(G), LCI(M) and LCI(R) conversions. The HyperWar ships table carries the hull inside rows 'LCI(L)-224-228 | 1942-44' and 'LCI(R)-224-226 | 1945', corroborating the service window and 1945 conversion year. Establishes that hull 225 was one of the first-design boats built en masse to the Lawley design shared across the ten construction yards.

    Finding
The vessel was a 158-ft diesel-powered landing craft of 1942 U.S. Navy construction - squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. With no steam plant, the characteristic asbestos pathways of larger combatants (boiler and steam-line lagging, turbine insulation) do not apply; the era-consistent applications for a diesel landing craft are machinery and exhaust insulation, engine-room gaskets and flange packing, valve and pump packing, electrical insulation, and insulation felts in accommodation spaces. Asbestos presence aboard this specific hull is an era-consistent inference, not a documented fact.

    Limitations
Inference only - no spec sheet, contract, survey, or crew account identifies any asbestos product aboard LCI(L)-225. LCIs were austere, mass-produced landing craft; the quantity and extent of any asbestos aboard would plausibly have been far below that of a steam-driven combatant. The hull's mid-service conversion to a rocket craft (in evidence by January 1945) and post-war disposal are undocumented for materials. Does not establish quantity, exposure of any individual, or present-day condition.
