- Limitations
- Volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates corroborated against the official BuShips Ships' Data 1945 roster (ev-02), which conflicts on keel-lay (6 Jan) and commissioning (1 Feb) dates; see ev-11 and gaps. Campaign listing reproduces the CNO-approved format but is not itself a primary combat record. Contains no asbestos content.

[3]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. II, NAVSHIPS 250-011 (April 15, 1945) - official LCI(L) design table and per-hull roster (shipscribe.com scan with text layer) [other_primary]

- SDB1945v2 LCI(L) design table and hull roster, 'LCI(L)236 (ex-APY236)' row (Lawley & Son block)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official BuShips roster lists 'LCI(L)236 (ex-APY236)' under the George Lawley & Son, Neponset, MA builder block: keel laid 6 Jan 1943, launched 26 Jan 1943, commissioned 1 Feb 1943. The LCI(L)-1-350 design table gives: 158'6" overall / 153'0" waterline, 23'8" extreme beam, ~387 tons full-load displacement, ~14.4 knots trial speed, GM diesel engines driving two shafts (diesel-only plant - no boilers or steam machinery), 4-5 x 20mm AA armament, magazine/antenna and fuel data, and per-hull construction dates. The original APY designation confirms the class's pre-LCI(L) 'APY' numbering.

- SL44 printed p.335 (ACPL Genealogy Center scan narasl44/361.jpg); SL44 Introduction (printed p.1): records are part of RG 24
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The SL44 entry for this hull reads, verbatim: 'LCI(L)-236 / Mar. 1, 1944-June 30, 1945 / 2' - two deck logbooks covering 1 March 1944 through 30 June 1945 held in Record Group 24 (Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel) at the National Archives. Coverage is continuous within that span (SL44 prints all gaps of one month or more, and none are shown). Coverage does NOT reach back to the 27 Jan 1943 commissioning - the logbooks for Jan 1943-Feb 1944 (the Tunisian, Sicilian, Salerno, and most of the Anzio window) are not in the SL44 inventory, and no post-30 June 1945 logbooks (covering the LCI(G) conversion and lay-up) appear either.

- Population
- Crew and embarked troops, Mar 1944-Jun 1945 (the logged window)
- Limitations
- An inventory of physical holdings, not the logbooks themselves - the logs are not digitized (the NARA online deck-log index covers mostly post-1961 and Vietnam-era material; this hull does not appear in it). Deck logs record positions, weather, personnel, and events - they are unlikely to contain asbestos-specific content, but are the ship-specific primary record that exists. Batch brief described this entry as 'PDF page 22'; the verified page is printed page 335 of the published volume (ACPL scan display 361).

- Finding
- The roster row for hull 236 reads: LCI(L), variant G, Lawley & Sons, Neponset MA, delivery 1 Feb 1943, 'To NDRF 1947' - consistent with NavSource's 24 Feb 1947 Maritime Commission transfer and with the BuShips commissioning date. Class data on the same page: the LCI(L) was originally to be designated APY (the 'big Y-boat' of the AP/APA/APc family); 923 LCI(L)s were built by ten shipyards; the first 350 boats (including 236) were 158.5 ft / 216 t light; LCI(G)s carried two 40mm guns and ten Mk.7 rocket launchers; surviving U.S. examples are LCI(L)-713 (Astoria OR) and LCI(L)-1091 (Eureka CA) - hull 236 is not among survivors.

- Finding
- The MIT Museum documents the builder: three generations of the Lawley family built yachts and working vessels at Neponset, Massachusetts from the 1860s to the 1940s; the yard 'built both wood and steel vessels, including dozens of World War II landing craft, before closing in 1946.' Secondary literature credits the Neponset yard as the LCI(L) primary design yard whose drawings were shared with the other nine LCI(L) builders, and the same yard pioneered the LCS(L) design.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Asbestos-relevant systems aboard a 1943 diesel-powered landing craft were limited compared to steam combatants: diesel exhaust-system lagging, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck covering, and winch/brake linings are the era-standard applications for the type. The LCI(L)'s small crew (24) and open-deck configuration reduced below-deck insulation scope relative to larger ships, but the compact machinery space concentrates any exhaust-lagging disturbance work.

- Finding
- CourtListener searches for this hull returned zero qualifying results: 'LCI(L)-236' type=o count=0 and type=r count=0; 'LCI(G)-236' type=o count=0 and type=r count=0; 'LCI-236' type=r count=0; 'LCI 236' type=r count=0; 'LCIL-236' type=r count=0. No opinion or docketed case naming this hull under any checked spelling was located. PARTIAL COVERAGE: the loose-spelling opinion-index queries ('LCI-236', 'LCI 236', 'LCIL-236' type=o) could not be completed - the API returned HTTP 429 under the fleet-wide pacing budget on repeated attempts; those are logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as negative results.

- Limitations
- Zero hits in a public-case index does not prove no claim was ever filed - many asbestos filings settle without opinion text, and hull-number landing craft are named in litigation far less often than capital ships. The type=o loose-spelling gap is a real coverage limitation. No asbestos-specific query term was added; results are designation-exact searches.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-236 / LCI(G)-236 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). No law-firm or marketing listicle asserting asbestos aboard this specific hull was located either - unusually clean for a WWII hull. This hull was never a museum ship and was disposed to MARCOM in 1947, so no present-day ACM questions exist.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1943-era naval construction at a yard of this type is era-consistent with asbestos use in the limited applications listed in ev-08. The undigitized deck logs (SL44 inventory) and any Lawley yard work packages are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

Commissioning - NavSource and uboat.net give 27 Jan 1943; the official BuShips roster and the shipbuildinghistory delivery column give 1 Feb 1943. The pattern (sister hull LCI(L)-235 commissioning 27 Jan 1943 in the same rosters) is consistent with either a one-row transcription slip or a delivery-vs-formal-commissioning distinction for the class. Both dates are carried in the record fields with attribution rather than silently picked.
