    Finding
The ship's own operational war diary for 28 June-31 August 1943 survives digitized (forwarded to Commander-in-Chief U.S. Fleet under cover letter dated 11 September 1943, signed H. Townsend, Lt., USNR, Commanding Officer). Diary content read at full resolution: on 28 June 1943 she was moored port side to LCI T728 at Hutchinson Creek, Florida Island, got underway 1639 'proceeding to Russell Island in accordance with secret orders,' and at 2100 was 'steering in column formation this ship guide ship of the column' - the staging move for the New Georgia-Rendova landing of 30 June. On 2 August she lay moored at Poko Plantation, Rendova Island 'in companied with LCI Groups Fourteen and Fifteen,' and at 0700 'Commander Group 15 shipped his flag to LCI(L) 333 temporary' - the ship briefly served as the group commander's flag; she beached at Poko Plantation at 0836. The file includes her action report for 15 August 1943 (Vella Lavella run): Enclosure (B) is a hand-drawn formation diagram captioned 'Action Report of L.C.I.(L) 333, Time: 20:55 L' showing a convoy of LCI(L)s 222, 330, 331, 21, 333, 22, 67, 68, 332, 334 and 64 on course 090 deg T at 12 knots; a torpedo plane 'approached convoy on course approximately 180 deg T, launched a torpedo broad on port bow at approximately 100 yards' and 'torpedo passed between LCI(L) 21 and LCI(L) 333.' On 16 August she steamed in cruising formation with 11 LCIs and 5 DDs (LCI 222 guide, this ship fifth in column), passed Russell Island and Savo Island, and anchored in Hutchinson Creek; on 31 August she lay anchored there 'in companied with LCI(L) Flot. Five.'

    Limitations
Primary wartime record authored aboard the ship and signed by her commanding officer. Establishes Solomons presence (Florida Island/Russell Islands/Rendova June-August 1943), temporary Group 15 flagship duty on 2 August 1943, the 15 August torpedo attack with the torpedo passing between this ship and LCI(L)-21, and LCI(L) Flotilla Five association. The action-report text pages were not individually transcribed - only Enclosure B's diagram was read; narrative detail beyond the diagram is unextracted. The ship's November-17 December 1943 war diary continues the Hutchinson Creek base period ('Beached at Hutchinson Creek, Florida Island ... in company with LCI(L) Com Flot Five' on 1 November) and then documents a repair availability in Sydney, Australia: on 16 December she lay 'At Marine railway Morts Dry Dock Browns, Sydney, Australia ... Ship is on dock for repairs,' and on 17 December she came off the marine railway at 1012, fueled at Gore Cove, moored starboard side to LCI(L) 329 at Woolloomooloo dock, Sydney, and recorded a change of command: '1500 Lt. H. Townsend D-V(G) 117582 USNR was this day relieved of the Command U.S.S. LCI(L) 333. 1510 Lt. (jg) Jens H. Steen D-V(S) USNR, 144049 took over Command of U.S.S. LCI(L) 333.'

    Finding
NARA's digitized muster-roll file unit for this hull ('LCI(L) 333 - Muster Rolls,' 117 images, Ancestry partnership scans) opens with the standard transmittal sheet for the 31 December 1942 muster roll: a handwritten annotation reads 'Comm. 11-24-42 to 12-1-45' - indicating the digitized rolls span commissioning through 1 December 1945. The sheet was certified by the Executive Officer (Lt.(jg) J. L. O'Leary, USNR, per the signature), approved 30 January 1943 by H. Townsend, Lt., USNR, Commanding Officer, and forwarded 30 January 1943 from Galveston, Texas - consistent with her Gulf Coast commissioning at the Houston builder's port. The roll pages themselves were not transcribed (crew names recoverable on request).

The LCI(L) Group Sixty-Four war diary for March 1945 places LCI(L)-333 in the Philippines at Lingayen Gulf: 'LCI(L) Group SIXTY-FOUR of LCI(L) Flotilla TWENTY-TWO, attached to SEVENTH Amphibious Force, is composed of LCI(L)s 62, 63, 328, 333, 334, 335, 357, 358, 359, 360 (Group Flagship), 443 and 444.' Paragraph 3 records 'Commander LCI(L) Group SIXTY-FOUR in command all LCI(L)s present at Lingayen Gulf, Philippine Islands on 3 March 1945. LCI(L)s 333, 335, 357, 360, 443, 616, 777, 1033 present 1 March 1945. LCI(L) 358 arrived Lingayen Gulf 1400 1 March 1945 from Subic Bay.' Paragraph 5 assigns smoking stations for 3 March 1945: 'LCI(L)s 333 and 616 - Liberty ships anchored off Bud River Area ... All LCI(L)s present lay smoke screen when so ordered by SOPA during Air Raid Alerts' - the ship's documented duty at Lingayen was screening anchored shipping. NARA's Special List 44 inventory (List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947) records Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-333 covering '7/1/1943-6/30/1945' (Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, series NAID 594258, RG 24) - the full wartime span from the Rendova operation through the end of the war. The coverage start falls about seven months after the 24 November 1942 commissioning - the ship's November 1942-June 1943 logs are not in this inventory line. These logbooks are not on NARA's list of fully digitized Navy deck logs; digitized ship-specific content for this hull instead sits in the RG 38 war-diaries series and the RG 24 muster-roll series.

  13. [13]Class propulsion per NavSource specifications block (ev-08) and Bureau of Ships Ships' Data transcription (HyperWar, ev-09); Atlas shipyards.json checked - no 'brown' or 'brown-shipbuilding-houston' yard record exists among 37 yard_ids [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Class/era assessment: the LCI(L)-1 design was diesel-powered (two banks of GM series-71 engines, 4 per shaft) with no boilers and no steam distribution, so the steam-system insulation (boiler lagging, steam-line covering, turbine insulation) that dominated asbestos load on steam vessels of the era was absent from this class. Remaining era-typical applications possible aboard include gaskets, machinery packing, exhaust-system insulation, electrical and wire insulation, joiner and deck coverings, and brake linings. The hull was built in 1942 at Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, Texas - a yard that does NOT appear in the Atlas shipyard dataset, so there is no yard-level asbestos-product documentation to weigh; the yard linkage is simply undocumented.

    Limitations
Design- and era-level inference only - the class specification lists machinery type, not insulation materials, and no period spec sheet for LCI(L) insulation was located. The absence of a yard record in the project dataset is itself a gap, not evidence of absence. The BuShips drawing set for this hull (ev-11) is the undigitized primary source where material callouts would appear. Does not establish asbestos aboard this craft, nor quantity, condition, exposure, or causation.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II, the era and program under which this 1942 landing craft was mass-produced, and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard naval and merchant hulls.

WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarship on WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, and the study population centered on steam-driven tonnage - applicability to a small diesel landing craft is unquantified. Does not establish quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or material specification naming USS LCI(L)-333 was found in the public sources searched (NARA catalog - including 115 file units surfacing on the hull-number query, NHHC/DANFS, NPS, MARAD, naval-history transcription sites). No DANFS entry exists for this hull at all. The undigitized BuShips drawing set (ev-11) and the physical deck logs (ev-07) remain the unmined primary leads.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1942 wartime construction is era-consistent with possible asbestos-containing materials in gaskets, electrical insulation, and joiner work. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

CourtListener sweeps via the authenticated helper: exact-name docket search '"USS LCI(L)-333"' returned zero hits; exact hull-number docket search '"LCI(L)-333"' returned zero hits; opinion searches '"LCI(L)-333"', '"USS LCI(L)-333"', and variant '"LCI-333"' each returned zero hits - no qualifying asbestos litigation, other litigation, or name collisions were returned at all (all five queries completed HTTP 200). The docket search for variant '"LCI-333"' and the remaining variant queries ('LCIL-333', 'LCI 333', 'LCI(L) 333') could not be completed before the fleet rate-limit stand-down; logged as gaps.

    Limitations
CourtListener coverage is not exhaustive of PACER/state filings; the five completed queries (two docket, three opinion) returned zero results (no collisions to classify), but the variant docket search and remaining hull-variant queries were not completed within the fleet rate-limit window, so the sweep is partial rather than exhaustive. Absence of litigation naming a hull does not establish absence of exposure; LCI-class claims would typically be pleaded by class name or not at all given the craft's size and diesel plant.
