    Finding
NARA Special List 44 (ship-number section) inventories surviving Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-340 covering 3 January 1943 through 30 June 1945 - i.e., an in-scope wartime log run exists in physical NARA custody at Archives II, College Park. These are log-coverage dates, not commissioning/decommissioning dates; the list entry begins three weeks after the documented 12 December 1942 commissioning.

Establishes that deck logs exist in RG 24 custody for 1/3/1943-6/30/1945 - not their contents, which were not read. Logs after 30 June 1945 (occupation/China service, decommissioning) are not listed in this SL44 entry and their survival is unverified. SL44 predates the deck-log digitization program; LCI(L)-340 does not appear on NARA's list of deck logs digitized in the online catalog (checked 2026-09-30). No asbestos content.

Secondary warship reference confirms milestones (laid down 1 Oct 1942; launched 31 Oct 1942; commissioned 12 Dec 1942; reclassified LCI(R) 10 July 1945; sold 5 December 1946; builder Brown Shipbuilding, Houston) and places the hull in transcribed wartime orders of battle: Cape Gloucester landings (Operation Dexterity, 26 Dec 1943) in Task Unit 76.1.32 for Beach Yellow Two, Lt.(jg) H.F. Eckenrode, USNR, commanding; Operation Straightline, Arara/Wadke Island (17-18 May 1944) in Task Unit 77.2.3, Eckenrode still commanding; Cebu City landings (Operation Victor II, 24-28 Mar 1945) in Task Unit 78.2.6 close-support unit - listed there as USS LCI(R)-340, Lt.(jg) J.O. Luby, USN. The March 1945 order of battle already styles her LCI(R)-340, months before the 10 July 1945 official redesignation date, corroborating the photographic record that the rocket conversion was in operational use by February 1945.

uboat.net is a secondary compilation (editor Guðmundur Helgason) transcribing official action reports - the OOB texts are near-verbatim from COMTASKGR/COMTASKFOR reports (sources cited at page foot) but the site is not a primary source itself. Commanding-officer attributions come from the transcribed OOBs, not a muster roll - a command change between May 1944 and March 1945 is shown but not dated. No asbestos content.

    Finding
The wartime official listing carries LCI(L)-340 among commissioned LCI(L)-1 class craft (commissioned 1942-44 window) with no loss annotation, and separately lists LCI(R)-340 (with LCI(R)-341, -342) under the Landing Craft, Infantry (Rocket) section commissioned 1945 - independent confirmation that the LCI(R) conversion was an official Navy redesignation, not a field nickname. Class spec block: displacement 387 tons full load; length 160'; beam 23'3"; draft 5'4" fwd, 5'11" aft full load; speed 15.5 kt; armament 4x20mm; complement 3 officers + 21 enlisted; capacity 6 officers and 182 troops or 75 tons cargo; '2 sets G.M. diesel engines; twin variable-pitch screws, 1600 BHP.'

    Finding
Official Australian War Memorial collection record documents troops of the 29th Australian Infantry Brigade loading stores at Gili Gili, New Guinea, 15 July 1943, for the brigade's move to Buna; NavSource's caption identifies the ship in this photograph as USS LCI(L)-340. The AWM caption itself says 'American LCI's' without a hull number - the hull attribution comes via NavSource identification. Related NavSource-captioned photography (NARA USMC photo 72064, contributed by NHHC) places Marines boarding LCI(L)-340 at Oro Bay, New Guinea, 24 December 1943, for the Cape Gloucester landing.

    Finding
Ship-specific combat record: on the morning of 16 February 1945 at Mariveles harbor, Bataan, Japanese suicide boats hit four LCS(L)s - sinking LCS(L)(3)-7, -26, and -49 (73 killed) and forcing LCS(L)(3)-27 to beach. The LCI(R)-340 photograph (with shell damage visible) was taken shortly after; two hours later, while firing rockets on Corregidor, LCI(R)-340's mast was shot away and the ship took numerous small-arms hits. corregidor.org's USN losses table independently lists the three LCS(L)(3) sinkings at Mariveles/Corregidor Channel on 16 February 1945 and records 'LCI(R)' wounded for that date. Documents that the hull was in rocket-launcher configuration under fire at Corregidor, and that the crew absorbed battle damage.

    Finding
A steel-hulled amphibious landing craft built in late 1942 at a Gulf Coast yard under Navy contract sits squarely inside the documented Navy asbestos era: GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substitution until the early 1970s. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel amphibious craft of this period: exhaust and engine-room thermal insulation/lagging, gaskets and flange packing, valve stem packing, electrical insulation and wire coatings, and joiner/cabin materials. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam turbines - the boiler-room lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the residual pathways are machinery insulation, gaskets/packing, and electrical/joiner materials.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, work package, or survey located for LCI(L)-340. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Small-craft practice differed from fleet combatants - the small size and diesel plant mean less insulation scope than a steam combatant, which this inference does not establish either way. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

CORRECTION: one NavSource caption on the hull's page reads 'USS LCI(L)-72, USS LCS(L)-340 and USS LCI(L)-342 beached while embarking troops of the 1st Bn, 163rd Rgt, 16 May 1944.' No LCS(L)-340 existed - the LCS(L)(3) series numbered only into the 130s - and the paired caption for the same photograph correctly reads 'USS LCI(L)-72, USS LCI(L)-340 and USS LCI(L)-342 beached at Aitape, New Guinea.' The 'LCS(L)-340' string is a caption typo for LCI(L)-340.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming LCI(L)-340 or LCI(R)-340 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search returned zero results for every spelling variant ('LCI(L)-340', 'LCI-340', 'LCI 340', 'LCI(R)-340'). The hull was sold in 1946 with fate unknown, so no museum-era or modern hazmat documentation exists to find. No DANFS entry exists (numbered LCIs were not individually covered); NVR coverage predates its scope (disposed 1946).
