    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation sourcing Turner Publishing's LCI history, not a primary registry - dates generally track official records but carry no document citation per datum. Contains no asbestos or material content. The 'date unknown' decommissioning and the single post-sale disposition line ('fate unknown') are the limits of the public record for this hull.

    Limitations
Documents flotilla-level unit citation including this hull; describes combat fire-support operations (preceded assault waves, close-range rocket and gunfire, smoke screens, UDT/reconnaissance support) - not material or asbestos content. NavSource transcription reproduces the citation text; the underlying SECNAV citation is a primary document this transcription mirrors.

The HyperWar U.S. Navy landing ships/craft compilation lists LCI(G)-372 in commission 1944-45, corroborating the gunboat designation window in NavSource; no loss/damage notation is carried for this hull (the table's dagger marks and notes flag lost or damaged craft, and 372 has none).

Secondary compilation; the 'Comm. 1944-45' column reflects the LCI(G) designation window, not original commissioning. No asbestos or material content. Corroborative only - does not resolve the LCI(M)/LCI(R) conversion-table discrepancy (see gaps).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Special List 44 inventories two logbooks for this hull, styled LCI(L)(G)-372: date spans 'Sept. 24-30, 1943' and 'Jan. 1, 1944-June 30, 1945' (2 logbooks). The first span covers her commissioning week at Boston; the second covers her LCI(G) gunboat service through the Leyte, Lingayen, and Okinawa campaigns. These are log-coverage dates held at NARA, not commissioning/decommissioning dates; October-December 1943 is not covered by the listed logbooks.

    Limitations
Inventory of records held at the National Archives (Archives II, College Park for post-1941 logs) - establishes that deck logs exist for this hull, not their content. The logs are not among the digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the navy-online digitized list contains no LCI(L)(G)-372 entry). No asbestos content. The batch tasking described the SL44 entry as a single 9/24-9/30/1943 span; the actual row lists two spans - this record carries the complete entry.

    Finding
A published operational history documents this hull twice: (1) at Okinawa, Task Unit 52.18.3 under LCDR C. J. Starkus consisted of 'LCI(G)s 366(GF), 372, 439, 440, and 475' supporting underwater-demolition-team operations at Kerama Retto beginning 25 March 1945; (2) endnote 19 cites 'USS LCI(L) 372, Serial 078, Action Report 3-44; Beach Assault on Leyte Island, 21 October 1944' - a specific wartime action report for this hull held in Navy records (RG 38 action-report series), an archival lead for her Leyte operation record.

LCI(G)-372 ship's company (~70) and supported UDT swimmers at Kerama Retto, March-April 1945
    Limitations
Secondary naval history quoting primary records; the Serial 078 action report itself was not examined - its existence and title are documented through the book's apparatus. Mirror site (erenow.org) reproduces the published text; the underlying action report is the lead worth pursuing at NARA. No asbestos content. Rielly's appendix conversion table separately lists hull 372 among both LCI(M) and LCI(R) conversions at Manus Island, which conflicts with his own LCI(G) usage here - treated as an unresolved discrepancy in gaps, not adopted.

    Finding
A steel-hulled diesel amphibious craft built in 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel landing craft of this type and period were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery and piping insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical/cable insulation in the confined 158-foot hull. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-hull confined-space exposure dynamic applies fully for crew and embarked troops.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for this vessel. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. LCIs were austere wartime construction at small commercial yards; the asbestos fraction of her outfit was likely smaller than a comparably aged steam vessel's but is undemonstrated for this hull.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-372 / LCI(G)-372 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero opinions for all three designation spellings ('LCI-372', 'LCI(L)-372', 'LCI(G)-372') and zero RECAP dockets across the same variants; the batch tasking's PRIMARY corpus check likewise reports no match at any tier under LCI/LSI spellings, same-number conversions, or documented renumbering. The only asbestos-adjacent material on this vessel type is program-level (GAO) and class/era inference.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the two NARA logbooks and the Serial 078 action report are undigitized leads that have not been examined, and a zero-hit CourtListener result covers only docketed litigation indexed there (most small-craft-era personal-injury claims were state or unreported federal filings). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
