    Finding
Identity, construction, and wartime record for this hull: LCI-351-class Landing Craft Infantry (Large); laid down 30 November 1943 at George Lawley & Sons Shipbuilding Corp., Neponset, Mass.; launched 7 December 1943; commissioned USS LCI(L)-393 on 11 December 1943; assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in LCI Flotilla Five (CDR H. V. Milton), LCI Group Fourteen (LT H. M. Mattson USN), LCI Division Twenty-Eight; LTjg. E. B. Bagby USNR in command as of May 1945; international radio call sign NJZI. A crew-donated photograph documents the craft underway at Eniwetok Atoll in August 1944 (source: Robert C. Stowe for his father LTjg. Richard H. Stowe, USS LCI(L)-393, 1944-45). Listed ribbons: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal - no campaign table and no battle stars listed. Decommissioned date unknown; struck from the Naval Register 20 March 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission 27 February 1948; final disposition fate unknown.

    Limitations
NavSource is a compiled secondary reference (transcribing Turner Publishing's USS LCI volume and Navy records), not a contemporaneous log or Navy action report. The Eniwetok placement rests on a family-donated photo caption, not a log or action report. No battle-star or campaign credits are listed for this hull. Contains no asbestos information whatsoever.

No commands, events, or postwar history are listed for this hull.

    Limitations
uboat.net is a reputable privately compiled database drawing on wartime records; it is secondary, not a primary source. The 'ordered 9 Mar 1943' date appears only here and is not carried as a record fact. The absence of operation listings means no independent order-of-battle corroboration of wartime employment beyond the NavSource flotilla assignment. Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding
The Colton production table independently lists this hull: 'LCI(L)-393 | Lawley & Sons | Neponset MA | 11 Dec 1943 | to NDRF 1948' - consistent construction/disposal data with NavSource and uboat.net, and specifically placing the hull into National Defense Reserve Fleet custody in 1948 following the 27 February 1948 Maritime Commission transfer.

    Limitations
Compiled secondary production table; the date column is delivery/commissioning, matching the 11 Dec 1943 commissioning. 'To NDRF 1948' is the furthest documented disposition step found - the MARAD Vessel History Database holds no status card for this hull (searched 2026-09-30), so subsequent sale/scrapping is undocumented. Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's Special List 44 inventory (by ship number, PDF page 23) lists Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-393 covering 11 December 1943 through 30 June 1945 - in-scope wartime service documentation held in Record Group 24, retrievable for this hull. The coverage start coincides with the 11 December 1943 commissioning date; these are log-coverage dates, not themselves asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates.

    1943-1945 (log coverage)
    Limitations
The entry is an inventory record only - it establishes that NARA holds logbooks for this hull for the stated span, not their contents. The deck logs themselves were not opened for this record; post-June-1945 logs (the craft remained in service until struck 20 March 1946) are outside this inventory listing. No asbestos or condition information is contained in the listing.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
LCI(L)s were diesel-powered landing craft of a utilitarian wartime Bureau of Ships design (designed May 1942; over 900 built by ten yards; ~158 ft, twin-screw). This hull's propulsion was eight General Motors Series 71 six-cylinder diesel engines in two quad banks, four engines per shaft through GM reduction gears, twin variable-pitch propellers (2,320 shp) - an all-diesel plant with no boilers or steam system, so the asbestos-relevant applications aboard are the era-standard diesel-craft items: engine exhaust and muffler lagging, thermal/acoustic insulation in the engine room and accommodations, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. HAER AK-52 also documents that the LCI(L) working/contract plans were produced by the Engineering Division of George Lawley & Son Corp., Boston - i.e., this hull was built at the class's own design yard, which delivered its first hull (LCI(L)-209) 30 September 1942.

Construction trades (Neponset MA, 1943); wartime crew in confined engine-room and accommodation spaces
    Limitations
Class/design inference only - HAER AK-52 documents a sister craft (LCI(L) 653, same LCI-351 class) and the LCI(L) design generally; it does not name this hull and does not itself assert asbestos content. No ship-specific material list exists for this hull; asbestos presence aboard is era- and design-level inference, not ship-proven. Does not establish quantity, products installed, or present-day presence (hull fate unknown since 1948).

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's construction (1943) and entire service era (1943-46).

    Finding
Mystic Seaport Museum holds the Lawley Family Collection (Coll. 279), containing business papers of the George Lawley & Son yard at South Boston, Neponset, and Quincy - vessel records, cost sheets, scantlings, owners' papers, and wage information spanning the yard's operation through 1946. This is the located archival repository for the builder of this hull; yard build records for LCI(L)-393's construction window may be retrievable there.

    Limitations
Repository-level lead only - the collection's cataloged description covers the Lawley business papers generally; no hull-level file was reviewed or confirmed to exist for LCI(L)-393. Does not establish any asbestos fact; wartime LCI(L) contract documentation may sit in NARA contract files rather than this collection.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed asbestos case naming LCI-393 / LCI(L)-393 was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches for '"LCI(L)-393"' and '"LCI-393"' each returned zero results, the class-level '"LCI" asbestos landing craft' opinion search returned zero, and the RECAP docket search for both spellings returned zero - a clean negative, not even a name collision. Builder-yard checks ('"Lawley" asbestos', '"George Lawley"') surfaced only non-asbestos name collisions and party-name hits. No individual DANFS entry exists for this numbered landing craft. MARAD's Vessel History Database holds no status card for this hull (only LCI(G)-190 is indexed under LCI-type craft).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - as a 1943 combat-built landing craft the hull sits inside the documented Navy asbestos era. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The vessel was transferred to the Maritime Commission in 1948 with fate unknown, so no modern survey can exist unless the hull is identified.
