- Identity, construction, and wartime record for this hull: laid down 5 January 1944 at George Lawley & Sons Shipbuilding Corp., Neponset, MA; launched 12 January 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-405 on 18 January 1944; reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Gunboat) LCI(G)-405 on 15 June 1944; assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater; credited campaign - Western Caroline Islands operation, capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, 6 October to 14 November 1944; one battle star for WWII service; ribbons listed include American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (1), and World War II Victory Medal. Decommissioned at an unrecorded date at Orange, TX; struck from the Naval Register 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission 1 December 1947; sold for scrapping. Page photographs include a 16 January 1944 outfitting-dock photo of LCI(L)-405 with LCI(L)-406 and LCI(L)-407 at Neponset (a George Lawley yard photo in US National Archives collections) and wartime LCI(G)-405 crew photos contributed via the USS LCI National Association newsletter.

- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 inventory (by ship number, PDF page 17) lists Navy deck logs for LCI(L)(G)-405 covering 18 January 1944 through 30 June 1945 - in-scope wartime service documentation held in Record Group 24, retrievable for this hull. These are log-coverage dates, not commissioning or decommissioning dates: the span begins on the documented 18 January 1944 commissioning date and ends while the vessel remained in service (struck 1946). NARA files the entire run under the final gunboat designation even though the reclassification to LCI(G) did not occur until 15 June 1944.

- Limitations
- The entry is an inventory record only - it establishes that NARA holds logbooks for this hull for the stated span, not their contents. The deck logs themselves were not opened for this record; post-June-1945 logs (through the 1946 striking and Orange, TX decommissioning) are outside this inventory listing. No asbestos or condition information is contained in the listing.

- Finding
- Published action-report-based history places this hull in LCI(G) Group 39 under Lieutenant Commander E. L. Yates, within LCI Flotilla Thirteen under Commander John H. Morrill. At the 17 September 1944 Angaur assault (TU 32.6.5), Unit Baker under Commander Morrill - LCI(G)s 404, 405, 406, 727, 728, 729, and 730 (FF) - attacked Blue Beach, delivering rocket and gun fire in waters found to be mined. Thereafter the gunboat worked patrol/picket duty north of Peleliu. On the night of 24 December 1944, anchored by her stern anchor in Yoo Passage, her watch discovered five Japanese swimmers towing a raft with a demolition charge toward her port quarter; the crew repelled the attack with a fantail-mounted .30 caliber machine gun and small-arms fire - commanding officer Lieutenant (jg) A. C. Timmons, who afterward recommended bow-anchor mooring for faster underway response. On 12 January 1945 she and LCI(G) 729 covered the east side of Yoo Passage during a repelled two-boat attack on LCI(L) 732. The book's notes cite the hull's own action report: 'USS LCI(G) 405, No Serial, Action Report - Report of Action Morning 24 December 1944, 15 February 1945, Enclosure A' - a NARA-retrievable document.

- Published secondary literature (author was Historian/Archivist of the USS LCS(L) 1-130 Association) that quotes and cites primary action reports and war diaries - it is not the action report itself, and the underlying NARA document was not pulled for this record. The 17 September Angaur assault participation predates the start of the NavSource credited-campaign window for this hull (6 October 1944) - the two are compatible (assault vs credited occupation phase) but only the NavSource credit is an official list. NavSource's LCI(G)-405 photo set, contributed through the same association newsletter ('The Elsie Item' Issue 45, July 2003, photos by Art Griffin, USS LCI(G) 405), documents this hull's crew by name: S/1c Art Griffin, Gunner's Mate Harold Prioux (photographed keeping armed watch for sharks during a Palau Islands swimming party), and crewmen identified as Kinnard, William Lunt, Douglas Leroy Lewis, Rose, Ross, Leisure, and Chuck Vogel.

- Finding
- LCI(L)s were diesel-powered landing craft of a utilitarian wartime Bureau of Ships design (designed May 1942; over 900 built by ten yards; ~159 ft, twin-screw). This hull is an LCI(L) 351-class craft - the same class HAER AK-52 documents through sister hull LCI(L) 653. This hull's propulsion was two sets of four General Motors 6-71-series diesel engines, four engines per shaft (2,320 shp) - an all-diesel plant with no boilers or steam system, so the asbestos-relevant applications aboard are the era-standard diesel-craft items: engine exhaust and muffler lagging, thermal/acoustic insulation in the engine room and accommodations, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. Her mid-1944 reclassification as an LCI(G) gunboat added weapons (40mm/20mm guns, .50-caliber machine guns, ten Mk7 rocket launchers) but did not change the all-diesel plant.

- Construction trades (George Lawley & Sons, Neponset MA, 1944); wartime crew in confined engine-room and accommodation spaces
- Limitations
- Class/design inference only - HAER AK-52 documents a sister craft (LCI(L) 653, same 351 class, different builder) and the LCI(L) design generally; it does not name this hull and does not itself assert asbestos content in WWII construction (its insulation mentions are a post-service commercial conversion). No ship-specific material list exists for this hull; asbestos presence aboard is era- and design-level inference, not ship-proven. Does not establish quantity, products installed, or present-day presence (hull scrapped after 1947).

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed asbestos case naming LCI(L)-405 / LCI(G)-405 / LCI-405 was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches for '"LCI(L)-405"', '"LCI-405"', '"LCI(G)-405"', and '"LCI" asbestos landing craft' each returned zero results, and the RECAP docket search across all three hull spellings returned zero - a complete negative with no name collisions. No individual DANFS entry exists for this numbered landing craft.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - as a 1944 combat-built landing craft the hull sits inside the documented Navy asbestos era. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The vessel was sold for scrapping after 1947, so no modern survey exists.
