Documented for this hull: laid down 27 October 1942 at New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; launched 4 December 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-41, 26 December 1942. Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater campaigns: Sicilian occupation 9-15 July 1943; Salerno landings 9-21 September 1943; Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings 22 January - 1 March 1944; Invasion of Southern France 15 August - 25 September 1944. Asiatic-Pacific Theater: LCI Flotilla Thirty-Seven (LCDR J. P. Moore), LCI Group One Hundred Ten (LT G. A. Lyon), LCI Division Two Hundred Nineteen. Converted to Landing Craft Infantry (Guns) at Navy Yard Long Beach with armament added at Naval Station Treasure Island; reclassified LCI(G)-41, 15 July 1945. Armament removed at Pearl Harbor and again designated LCI(L)-41. Occupation service in the Far East 27 November 1945 - 10 April 1946 (harbor control duties at Nagoya and Kobe-Osaka, Japan). Decommissioned 12 July 1946 at San Diego; struck from the Naval Register 1946; four battle stars for WWII service; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 20 February 1948; registered in 1951 as the vessel '41'; out of documentation 1984; fate unknown. Spec block: 216 t. light / 234 t. landing / 389 t. loaded; 158'5.5" x 23'3"; two sets of four GM diesels, four per shaft, 1,600 BHP, twin variable-pitch propellers; LCI(L) complement 3 officers + 21 enlisted; LCI(G) complement 5 officers + 65 enlisted; troop capacity 6 officers / 182 enlisted; four single 20mm guns plus two .50cal (LCI(L)); 2" plastic splinter protection on gun turrets, conning tower, pilot house.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - the history is credited to the USS LCI National Association's Turner Publishing volume and a crew member; milestone dates are consistent with the uboat.net allied-warships database (laid down 1942-10-27, launched 1942-12-04, commissioned 1942-12-26, LCI(G) reclassification 1945-07-15). Page verified live at navsource.net 2026-09-30. Contains no asbestos content. The 'registered as vessel 41 / out of documentation 1984' postwar trace rests on NavSource alone; the underlying merchant-vessel documentation records are a lead (see gaps).

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories Navy deck logs in Archives custody for LCI(L)-41 covering 9/30/1943 - 1/6/1944 (PDF page 23, entry verified in the live document). This is wartime service coverage: the window falls between the Salerno landings (9-21 Sep 1943) and the Anzio advanced landings (22 Jan 1944), during the ship's Bizerte-area operations period. Deck logs are the primary record of daily operations, personnel movements, and location - the highest-value unexamined primary source for this hull.

    Population
crew (the logged window covers ~3 officers/21 enlisted plus embarked personnel); shipboard population during Bizerte/Cape Gaeta operations
    Limitations
SL44 is an inventory of logbooks held, not the logs themselves: it establishes that logs exist for 1943-09-30 to 1944-01-06 only - a ~3-month window out of a 1942-1946 commission. Whether additional logs exist for the remainder of service (Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Southern France, LCI(G) conversion, occupation duty) is not resolved by this source. The logs' digitization status in the National Archives Catalog could not be confirmed (catalog is JS-rendered; NAID-level query not feasible from this session). The inventory carries no content detail - no asbestos-relevant content is asserted or implied.

    Limitations
Archival lead only: the film establishes physical presence at Anzio on 14 April 1944, not work performed, cargo carried, or materials aboard. NAID identifier resolves at catalog.archives.gov/id/76233 (HTTP 200) but the catalog record is JS-rendered and could not be independently fetched; title, date, and local ID are transcribed from the NavSource caption, which credits contributor David Upton. Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Two first-person crew accounts of this hull: (1) CO Ken Stern describes the ship as a 'square-conn' LCI of the 1-350 group, departing the Philadelphia-area building site for Norfolk and North Africa; Sicily and Salerno as a troop carrier; a December 1943 target-run against German shore batteries at Cape Gaeta; post-Anzio duty as a communications ship with additional radio gear and radiomen (spring 1944); Southern France on 15 August 1944 in the first wave as a salvage and fire-fighting ship; overhaul 'in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the sub-base'; transit via the Panama Canal to San Diego; and LCI(G) conversion in the Terminal Island dry dock at Long Beach. (2) QM1/c Earle L. Bailey adds: departed Little Creek, VA 19 March 1943 for Bermuda and convoy to North Africa; Sicily landings (ramps dislodged; field-hospital unit with nurses embarked for Gela; dry-dock repairs at La Goulette, Tunisia); Salerno grounding (took two wounded soldiers; pushed off the beach by bulldozer in a mined area); departed Mers El-Kebir, Algeria 14 December 1944 for the Portsmouth NH overhaul; and onward via Boston, Little Creek, Key West, the Canal Zone, and San Diego to Terminal Island, where he transferred off.

    Population
crew (Stern, Bailey, and named teammates); embarked troops incl. field-hospital nurses to Gela; Portsmouth and Terminal Island yard workers during 1944-45 availabilities (memoir-attested only)
    Limitations
First-person recollections published by the USS LCI National Association (a 501(c)(19) veterans' organization), not official records: dates and details are unverified memoir testimony, though internally consistent with the NavSource campaign record. Stern's 'scrap metal' ending is contradicted by documented MARCOM disposal and merchant registration (see ev-07); Portsmouth 'sub-base' identifies Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (Kittery, ME, opposite Portsmouth NH). No asbestos, material, or insulation content in either account; the conversion/overhaul episodes they describe are the maintenance-disturbance pathway only if era materials were present (inference, not fact).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered LCI(L)-1-class craft built Oct-Dec 1942 at New York Shipbuilding sits inside both the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO: substitution did not begin until the early 1970s) and that yard's documented asbestos product environment (insulation, panels, gaskets, packing documented in the Atlas yard dataset). Era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were engine and diesel-exhaust-system insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and electrical insulation in the confined hull volume. The diesel plant carries no boiler or steam turbine - the steam-lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply. The July 1945 LCI(G) conversion at Navy Yard Long Beach (Terminal Island) - major armament/topside rework inside another asbestos-documented Navy yard - is a disturbance pathway for any era materials present, and the class's 2-inch plastic splinter protection is a possible (undocumented) composite-panel application.

    Limitations
Class/era and yard-level inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-41. The yard datasets document asbestos use at the yards generally, not aboard this hull. The splinter-protection material is described only as 'plastic' in the spec block; composition is unestablished. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, deck-log citation, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-41 / LCI(G)-41 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned 0 results for the exact hull phrase in both the opinion and RECAP docket indexes and 0 for 'LCI-41'/'LCI 41' opinion variants; one variant docket query could not be run this session (fleet pacing - logged, not a negative result). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos in landing craft generically without primary sourcing (asbestos-ships.com 'Landing Craft Personnel and Asbestos Exposure' - excluded source class).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the vessel's unexamined deck logs, NY Shipbuilding and Terminal Island work packages, merchant-era documentation (1951-1984), and any disposal-contract records are all unexamined leads. The variant docket query left unrun this session is a residual coverage gap, not a finding. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

  8. [8]Disposition cross-check: NavSource disposal line (Maritime Commission transfer 1948-02-20; merchant registration as '41' 1951; out of documentation 1984; fate unknown) vs CO Ken Stern's memoir ending ('Our final gasp was scrap metal') [other_primary]

    Finding
CONFLICT FLAG: the commanding officer's memoir describes the ship ending as 'scrap metal' at San Diego after her 1946 return, but NavSource documents transfer to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 20 February 1948 and merchant-vessel registration as '41' from 1951 until documentation ended in 1984. The memoir line is a veteran's shorthand for the end of the ship's Navy career; the documented record carries the hull into commercial documentation for ~36 more years. NavSource's disposal line is carried; Stern's 'scrapped' reading is not asserted.
