    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-edited archival site whose page history is credited to the USS LCI National Association's Turner Publishing volume; dates and campaign attributions are consistent with official campaign listings and the NARA logbook inventory but are not themselves a digitized official record. The two January 1948 disposition dates are printed in the order shown (sale dated 6 Jan 1948 before the 17 Jan 1948 transfer line) - sequence anomaly unresolved. Contains no asbestos information.

    Special List 44 inventories four logbooks for LCI-43 covering 19 January 1943 - 30 June 1945 (row reads: 'LCI-43 | Jan. 19, 1943-June 30, 1945 | 4'). Confirms in-scope wartime service and locates the hull's deck logs in NARA custody.

    1943-1945 (log coverage)
    Limitations
Logbook coverage dates are not commissioning/decommissioning dates (commissioning was 26 Dec 1942 per NavSource; logs begin 19 Jan 1943). Coverage ends 30 June 1945 - before the 15 July 1945 LCI(G) reclassification and the April 1946 decommissioning - so later logs are outside this inventory. The logbooks themselves are not digitized; their contents are unexamined. ACPL scan is a public mirror of the NARA publication; NARA does not host the numbered-vessels list as a standalone page.

    Finding
Digitized NARA records naming this hull exist: 157 muster-roll images beginning with the 31 March 1943 roll (personnel roster source) and the December 1943 ship war diary (RG 38 World War II War Diaries series). War diaries of her parent formations - LCI Flotilla One (Feb-Nov 1943, covering North Africa/Sicily/Salerno) and LCI Group 110 (June 1945, covering the Pacific assignment) - are also cataloged.

    Limitations
File-unit titles and catalog metadata verified live; document contents not examined page-by-page. Flotilla/group war diaries document the formation, not necessarily this hull's daily movements. Whether the logs, diaries, or muster rolls contain any asbestos-related content is unknown - no exposure claim is made.

    Finding
At Anzio on 22 January 1944, LCI(L)-43 landed 157 embarked paratroopers on Red Beach and was alongside USS LCI(L)-20 when LCI(L)-20 took a direct German bomb hit that destroyed her; a photo shows LCI(L)-43 departing the beachhead at flank speed with LCI(L)-20's smoke behind her. Smith's account adds: underway from Pozzuoli 21 January in convoy astern of LCI(L)-20 and LCI(L)-221 as senior ship of Task Force 81.5 (Flotilla One, Group III); witnessed USS Portent (AM-106) strike a mine and sink that morning; bombing/strafing by eight Focke-Wulf 190s during the landing.

Crew-contributed photo caption plus a veteran's firsthand memoir published 73 years after the event in an association newsletter - recollection, not a Navy action report; consistent with the documented Anzio-Nettuno campaign participation. Establishes presence and events at Anzio, not any materials condition aboard.

Era inference built on: the official-derived LCI(L)-1 class spec block (diesel propulsion - 8 GM diesels, 4 per shaft, 1,600 BHP, twin variable-pitch screws; no steam plant); 1942 construction date placing the build in the period when asbestos was the standard shipboard insulation/gasketing material across U.S. naval construction. Era-consistent asbestos applications aboard a diesel amphibious craft: thermal insulation and exhaust/muffler lagging in engine spaces; gaskets and packing; electrical insulation; asbestos-cement/fireproofing panels; brake linings on ramp winches and windlass.

Construction trades (New York Shipbuilding, Camden, 1942); wartime crew
    Limitations
Class/design-level documentation, not a hull record - no source names asbestos aboard LCI(L)-43 specifically; applications are era-consistent inference. Diesel craft carried materially less asbestos than steam vessels (no boiler/turbine lagging). Does not establish quantity, locations, or present-day condition (hull scrapped 1948).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LCI(L)-43/LCI(G)-43 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener quoted-hull queries returned zero opinions and zero dockets; unquoted 'LCI-43' docket hits are all token collisions (MDL and civil docket fragments), not vessel references; a broad 'USS LCI' asbestos opinion sweep returned zero opinions naming any USS LCI.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the 1942 construction era makes era-standard materials plausible, but asbestos presence aboard this hull is not ship-proven. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
