    Finding
NARA's official inventory of Navy deck logs names this hull: 'LCI(L)-434 7/24/1943 6/30/1945' (Special List 44, ship-number edition, PDF page 23). Deck logs for this hull therefore exist in the National Archives holdings covering her wartime commissioned service from 24 July 1943 (the date also given by NavSource and uboat.net as her commissioning) through 30 June 1945. The underlying logs are RG 24 Entry 118 paper holdings at NARA College Park; this hull does not appear on NARA's digitized deck-log list.

    Limitations
The dates are deck-log coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning milestones - though the 7/24/1943 start coincides with the documented commissioning date. Deck logs record daily operations, positions, personnel and disciplinary entries - they carry no asbestos or material content and are not themselves an exposure record. Logs are undigitized; contents not examined. Verified live 2026-09-30 by direct PDF text extraction.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (source credited: Turner Publishing LCI Vol. II, 1995) - milestone dates corroborated here by uboat.net and the shipbuildinghistory yard list, but campaign participation windows were not independently verified against the official Navy awards/participation lists. The printed Lingayen campaign month (February) conflicts with the official 9 January 1945 landing (see ev-uss-lci-l-434-lcil434-04).

    Finding
Independent secondary corroboration of identity and milestones: uboat.net lists LCI(L)-434 of the LCI 351 class - ordered 22 March 1943, laid down 22 April 1943, launched 3 July 1943, commissioned 24 July 1943, sold 13 November 1946, built by New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp. (Barber, New Jersey). The yard-hull list for New Jersey Shipbuilding carries the row 'LCI(L) | 434 | US Navy | Landing Craft | Jul-43 | Sold 1946' within a production run of several hundred Navy LCI(L) hulls (hull numbers spanning roughly 238-884).

Both are secondary compilations (uboat.net specialist reference; Colton-style yard list mirrored at navalmarinearchive.com) - corroborating, not primary, sourcing. 'Ordered 22 Mar 1943' vs 'laid down 22 Apr 1943' distinguishes contract-order date from keel date. Yard list documents hull-by-hull production but no asbestos content.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CORRECTION: NavSource prints this hull's Luzon-operation campaign line as 'Lingayen Gulf landing, 9 to 18 February 1945.' The Lingayen Gulf landings occurred in January, not February: NHHC documents that 'the invasion of Luzon ... was set for 9 January 1945,' with preliminary minesweeping and bombardment from 6 January and the landings executed on schedule 9 January 1945. The February month on the NavSource campaign line conflicts with the official operational record and is treated as a transcription error; the campaign attribution itself (Luzon operation / Lingayen Gulf) is carried.

    historical_record
    Finding
Government wartime record of this hull's builder: the WPB/CPA register of authorized war industrial facilities lists 'new Jersey shipbuilding co PERTH AMBOY N J' in the alphabetical company register, in a shipbuilding block whose product columns include LANDING CRAFT INFANTRY and whose program columns include NAVY-SHIPS. The entry documents the Barber/Perth Amboy yard as a Navy-program wartime facility producing landing craft - the yard that built this hull and a run of several hundred sister LCI(L) hulls.

    Limitations
Yard-level record, not a hull record: names the builder, not LCI(L)-434. The source is an OCR-degraded scan of a multi-column register - the exact company-to-product column alignment is partially corrupt, so the specific product attribution is approximated (though landing-craft production at this yard is independently documented by the yard-hull list). Documents wartime production authorization only; no asbestos or material content.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A small all-diesel amphibious landing craft built mid-1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel combatant of this type and period were engine and exhaust/muffler lagging, gaskets and flange packing, valve packing, electrical insulation, and insulation/joiner materials in machinery and berthing spaces. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the confined-volume machinery-space exposure dynamic applies to a hull of her size.

    Locator

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
A period first-person diary names this hull in SW-Pacific service: under a Dec. 8 entry (1944 per the journal's own chronology - 'Dec. 1, 44' is explicitly dated), the LCI-226 diarist records 'Our gear box arrived today aboard L.C.I. 434, which has just come from Australia with 4 other LCI's' while both craft lay at the Stringer Bay / LaDava amphibious base (Milne Bay area, New Guinea). The entry places LCI-434 in New Guinea-area staging in early December 1944, consistent with NavSource's Cairns/New Guinea/Aitape 1944 photographs and the run-up to the January 1945 Lingayen operation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for LCI(L)-434: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming the hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches under spellings 'LCI(L)-434' (639 fuzzy hits, ALL 'LCI' corporate name collisions - LCI International, LCI Communications, etc., none ship-related), 'LCIL-434' (0), 'LCI(L) 434' (0), 'LCI-434' (0) and the phrase '"Landing Craft Infantry" asbestos' (0) returned no qualifying litigation; docket searches returned only 'LCI' corporate collisions unquoted and zero hits for the quoted phrase '"LCI(L)-434"'. The only 'asbestos aboard landing craft' content located is law-firm marketing material (asbestos-ships.com and similar), excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent materials would be expected on a 1943 hull. The litigation search covered CourtListener opinions and dockets under all spelling variants plus the craft-type asbestos phrase (all zero qualifying hits); it does not reach PACER-only records or sealed files. Deck logs, BuShips work packages, and the 1946 sale documents are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
