LCI-1-class Landing Craft Infantry (Large): laid down 2 November 1942 at New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; launched 9 December 1942; commissioned USS LCI(L)-45, 26 December 1942. Europe-Africa-Middle East service under LCI Flotilla One: Sicilian occupation (9-15 July 1943), Salerno landings (9-21 September 1943), West Coast of Italy operations - Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (22 January-1 March 1944), Elba and Pianosa landings (17 June 1944), invasion of southern France (15 August-16 September 1944). Asiatic-Pacific service: Borneo operation, Brunei Bay (7-12 June 1945). Reclassified LCI(G)-45, 15 July 1945; reverted to LCI(L)-45, 15 September 1945. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register in 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 19 February 1947. Purchased (date unknown) by Rivertow for use on MacKenzie Lake, southern British Columbia, reflagged Canada; acquired early 1980s by Seaforth Towing and Salvage, Sechelt, B.C.; sold 1994 to Aurora Marine Services of Kitimat, B.C., as MV Redonda; abandoned at Kitimat, B.C., circa 2015. Five battle stars for WWII; call sign NCKZ.

NavSource is a volunteer-edited archival site whose page history is credited to the USS LCI National Association's Turner Publishing volume; dates and campaign attributions are consistent with official campaign listings, the NARA logbook inventory, and the cataloged NARA action report but are not themselves a digitized official record. NavSource prints the Anzio-Nettuno window as '22 to 1 March 1944' (the standard campaign window is 22 January-1 March 1944). Contains no asbestos information. The post-Navy ownership outline is corroborated but partially disputed by Canadian registry data (see ev-08).

    1943-1945 (log coverage)
    Limitations
Logbook coverage dates are not commissioning/decommissioning dates (commissioning was 26 Dec 1942 per NavSource; inventoried logs begin 1 Dec 1943). Coverage ends 30 June 1945 - before the 15 July 1945 LCI(G) reclassification, the unknown decommissioning date, and the 1946 stricken date - so later logs are outside this inventory, and the Dec 1942-Nov 1943 period (including the Sicily and Salerno campaigns) is not covered here. The logbooks themselves are not digitized; contents unexamined.

    Finding
A hull-named NARA file unit exists: the ship's own narrative report of operations for 16 January - 2 February 1944 at Anzio, Italy - primary documentation of her participation in the Anzio-Nettuno landings (22 January 1944 onward), held at NARA College Park in the RG 38 war-diaries/operational-records series.

    Limitations
File-unit title and catalog metadata verified via the DPLA aggregation record (which carries the catalog.archives.gov/id/78407975 source URL); the NARA catalog item page is JavaScript-rendered and returned no readable text to direct fetch, and document contents were not examined page-by-page. A narrative report establishes the operation record exists; whether it or any related file unit contains asbestos-relevant content is unknown - no exposure claim is made. Analogous RG 24 muster-roll and monthly war-diary file units exist for sister hulls in this series but the specific LCI(L) 45 file-unit NAIDs were not located this session.

    Finding
Credited photographic record places this hull at Salerno (unloading men and supplies north of Agropoli, 21 September 1943, Signal Corps no. 180048), at the Anzio staging area embarking 3rd Ranger Battalion troops with LCI(L)-44 and LCI(L)-19 (22 January 1944), and underway in formation with LCI(L)-33 (date/location unknown). Post-service photos document her as Aurora Marine Services' MV Redonda with modified bow and added ramp, and as the abandoned hulk grounded in a tidal bay at Kitimat after removal from merchant service in 2015.

Era inference built on: the official-derived LCI(L)-1 class spec block (diesel propulsion - 8 GM diesels, 4 per shaft, 1,600 BHP, twin variable-pitch screws; no steam plant); November-December 1942 construction at New York Shipbuilding, Camden, placing the build in the period when asbestos was the standard shipboard insulation/gasketing material across U.S. naval construction. Era-consistent asbestos applications aboard a diesel amphibious craft: thermal insulation and exhaust/muffler lagging in engine spaces; gaskets and packing; electrical insulation; asbestos-cement/fireproofing panels; brake linings on ramp winches and windlass.

    Limitations
Class/design-level documentation, not a hull record - no source names asbestos aboard LCI(L)-45 specifically; applications are era-consistent inference. Diesel craft carried materially less asbestos than steam vessels (no boiler/turbine lagging). Does not establish quantity, locations, or present-day condition; the hulk attributed to this hull survives at Minette Bay, B.C., unsurveyed. shipbuildinghistory.com and yorkship.org are secondary compilations used for roster/contract corroboration.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LCI(L)-45/LCI(G)-45 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener quoted-hull queries returned zero opinions ('LCI(L)-45', 'LCI(G)-45', 'LCI-45'+asbestos) and zero dockets ('LCI(L)-45'); the single unquoted 'LCI-45' docket hit is a token collision on an unrelated insurance-coverage docket, not a vessel reference; a broad 'USS LCI' asbestos opinion sweep returned zero opinions naming any USS LCI.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CAUTION on the surviving-hulk claim: the Minette Bay/Kitimat hulk is attributed to ex-LCI(L)-45 by NavSource (Turner Publishing history) and by Nauticapedia's registry field ('LCI(L).45 (US Navy)'), and its documented ownership chain (Dennis 1952; Union Steamship; Raake; Rivtow 1969-85; Seaforth 1986-94; Aurora entities; Moon 2013-24) is consistent with NavSource's outline. BUT the Canadian registry-derived record describes the vessel as built 1944 in Portland, Oregon as 'YTC No. 501' - an origin inconsistent with LCI(L)-45's documented November-December 1942 Camden build - and the cited BC nautical historian notes no 'YTC' designation existed in the US Navy and that the rebuilt hull could be any of ~50 untraced Commercial Iron Works LCS(L)/LCI(L)-type hulls.

    Limitations
Resolves nothing - flags a genuine attribution dispute. Nauticapedia is a volunteer nautical-history project and shipindex.org aggregates registry data; neither is an official register. If the Portland-1944 registry line is correct, the Minette Bay hulk is NOT this hull and this vessel's post-1947 fate reverts to 'disposed of by MARAD, buyer/use unknown.' The 'abandoned at Kitimat c.2015' disposition and the lat/lon are therefore carried as attributed-but-contested.
