- LCI-351 class landing craft: laid down 19 August 1943 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, N.J.; launched 22 September 1943; commissioned USS LCI(L)-470 on 28 September 1943 (LTjg. W. M. Welsh USNR in command as of May 1945); reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Gunboat) LCI(G)-470 on 15 June 1944. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater - LCI Flotilla Three (1944); LCI Flotilla Six, LCI Group Eighteen, LCI Division Thirty-Five (May 1945). Campaigns: Marianas operation (Saipan 15 June-28 July 1944; Tinian 24-28 July 1944) and Western Caroline Islands (southern Palau Islands 15 September-14 October 1944). Occupation duty in the Far East 2 September-2 December 1945. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register 1946; sold 7 February 1947; fate unknown. - NavSource is a curated archive, not a federal repository; the narrative derives from a published association history (Turner Publishing, 1995). Specifications are class-standard figures, not hull-measured. The commissioning CO attribution is dated May 1945 and may not reflect the commissioning-day commander. Contains no asbestos information.

- Log-coverage dates only; they are not commissioning/decommissioning dates. The listed coverage ends 30 June 1945, before the ship's occupation duty and sale - post-June 1945 logs are not in this SL44 listing. Deck logs are not digitized in the NARA catalog for this hull; they exist as textual/microfilm holdings. Logs document operations, not asbestos content.

- Finding
- Digitized ship-specific war diaries for USS LCI(G) 470 exist at NARA for September 1944 through April 1945. The September 1944 diary (transmittal signed by commanding officer Philip J. Shaver Jr., 22 October 1944) records: preparatory availability at Carter City (Florida Island) with LCI Group 9 including SO radar installation by Landing Craft Repair Base No. 1; transit to the Palau Islands; D-Day 15 September 1944 standing off White Beach No. 2, Peleliu, firing 360 rockets from 36 launchers at 1,000 yards plus 1,500 rounds of 40mm and 1,000 rounds of 20mm ammunition; on 16 September embarked Landing Team 31 (1st Marine Division NCOs under Lt. W. A. Young) and fired two further 180-rocket barrages on White Beach targets; then picket patrol off Kossol Passage against enemy barge/MTB activity through 30 September. The April 1945 diary records picket duty in Kossol Passage/Schonian Harbor, a 7-9 April drydock availability, 435 rockets fired on Urukthapel Island on 11 April, and departure 22 April with LCI(G) Group Thirty-Nine for Eniwetok (arriving 30 April).

Diary coverage located runs September 1944-April 1945; earlier-period diaries (commissioning through August 1944, including the Saipan/Tinian assaults) were not located in the catalog search and remain an archival lead.

- Finding
- The NHHC vessel table for Typhoon Louise (9-10 October 1945, Buckner Bay, Okinawa) lists 'LCI 470 - Refloated 10/21/45', confirming ship-specific grounding in the typhoon (consistent with NavSource photo captions) and documenting that the hull was refloated twelve days later rather than lost. Fleet-level damage per the same page: 12 ships and craft sunk, 222 grounded, 32 severely damaged.

- Finding
- Crewmember Gabriel Chapa (assigned to USS LCI-470 after 1944 boot training at San Diego) recounts the ship's participation in the Saipan and Tinian invasions and service at Okinawa, and describes the ship being deliberately beached during a typhoon to prevent sinking - consistent with the documented Typhoon Louise grounding at Buckner Bay. Per the interview description, the ship returned to San Diego and Chapa was discharged in April 1946.

- Limitations
- Decades-later personal recollection; the catalog description lists 'Okinawa' among the invasions Chapa describes, but the ship's official campaign credits cover Saipan, Tinian, and the southern Palaus only - the Okinawa association is most consistent with post-surrender presence (the documented October 1945 grounding). No asbestos or materials content.

- Finding
- HAER documentation of USS LCI(L) 653 - a same-class (LCI(L)-351) hull built by the same yard (New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber, N.J.) - records the type's construction: 1/4-inch steel plate hull; eight six-cylinder General Motors Series 71 diesel truck engines (four per shaft) with variable-pitch propellers; 2-inch plastic splinter protection (crushed granite in bitumen) on gun positions, conning tower, and pilot house; diesel propulsion with no boilers or steam plant. The report documents the class design in detail without identifying asbestos-containing materials.

- Limitations
- Class/design documentation for a sister hull, not this vessel; the report's silence on asbestos does not establish absence aboard either hull - it simply means asbestos was not documented. Post-war alterations documented for LCI(L) 653 (engine replacement, conversions) do not apply to hull 470.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-470/LCI(G)-470 was found in the public sources searched. Sister-hull documentation reviewed (HAER AK-52 for LCI(L) 653; NRHP nomination for museum ship LCI(L) 713) likewise contains no asbestos content, and no asbestos documentation was located for the class as a whole.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard materials (gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, brake linings, deck coverings) are plausible but undocumented. The hull was scrapped/sold into private hands after February 1947, so no modern survey universe applies. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
