    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but no DANFS entry exists for this hull to verify against. Contains no asbestos content. The '3 February 1946' disposition date is chronologically impossible (precedes the 13 April 1946 return to custody and 5 June 1946 striking) - see ev-09 and gaps. Complement/spec figures are class-level, not verified per-hull.

Two Navy Cross citations name this hull, both for the Sicily assault 10 July 1943: (1) Yeoman Second Class Charles Binford Fletcher, USNR - 'while serving aboard Infantry Landing Craft U.S.S. LCI(L), FIVE (LCI(L)-5)' located a beaching point by swimming toward the beach within range of hostile guns, then rescued drowning soldiers under machine-gun fire; (2) Lieutenant Commander Richard Wayland Caldwell, USNR, 'Commanding Officer of the Infantry Landing Craft U.S.S. LCI(L), FIVE (LCI(L) #5)' - after his ship was 'beached and broached during an intense and close hostile attack and was riddled by hundreds of shells and machine-gun bullets,' fought the vessel for one hour, maintained gunfire until ammunition was exhausted, and completed the troop landing.

    Finding
A diesel-powered LCI-1-class landing craft built July 1942 at New York Shipbuilding sits inside that yard's and the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small combatant of this type and period were engine and exhaust-system lagging in the confined machinery spaces, gaskets, valve packing, compartment/machinery insulation, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Finding
Court record documenting asbestos use at this hull's builder yard: the estate alleged worker Robert Fish contracted mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos-containing joiner panels during construction of the N.S. Savannah at the New York Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company facility in Camden, NJ in 1960; defendants' proffered Fisher Report stated that 'the use of asbestos-containing joiner panels was contractually required by the federal government for the N.S. Savannah.' The court denied remand, holding removal proper under the federal officer removal statute (28 U.S.C. 1442(a)(1)).

    Limitations
Yard-level record, not a hull record: the exposure alleged is to a construction worker on a different vessel (N.S. Savannah) eighteen years after this hull was built at the same yard. Procedural-stage ruling - the opinion decides federal-officer removal jurisdiction, not the merits of the exposure claim; the allegation and the Fisher Report content are described, not adjudicated. Does not establish materials aboard LCI(L)-5, quantity, or individual exposure.

    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-5 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener was searched through the authenticated helper on 2026-09-30: 'LCI(L)-5' returns zero opinions and two dockets - a Delaware patent case and an unrelated Ninth Circuit veteran's appeal - both name collisions, not vessel references. A name-variant opinion query ('LCI(L)-5' OR 'LCI-5' OR 'LCI(L) 5') returned five opinions, all name collisions (LCI International telecommunications litigation, Leasing Consultants bankruptcy, an industrial-commission matter, a construction dispute) - none referencing the vessel or asbestos. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a hull disposed in the 1940s leaves almost no modern documentary trail. Deck logs (RG 24), BuShips work records, and State Department disposal files for this craft are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

NavSource 150005 disposition line; shipbuildinghistory LCI(L) table row for hull 5
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CORRECTION: NavSource's printed disposition date for this hull - 'disposed of through the US State Department, 3 February 1946' - is chronologically impossible: it precedes the 13 April 1946 return to US custody and the 5 June 1946 striking on the same page. Shipbuilding History records the same transaction as 'to DoS 1948,' which is internally consistent. The disposal channel (U.S. State Department) agrees across sources; the year does not - likely a transcription typo on the NavSource page. Fate after disposal: unknown.
