    Finding
The official NARA inventory of Navy deck logs carries a line for this hull - 'LCI(L)-510 | 12/3/1943 | 10/31/1944' (PDF page 24). The begin date coincides with the documented commissioning date (3 December 1943); the coverage window therefore opens at commissioning and establishes in-scope wartime service through at least 31 October 1944. The logbooks are physical holdings at NARA; they are not among the deck logs digitized in the National Archives Catalog online list (checked 2026-09-30).

    Population
Ship's company (1943-12-03 onward); embarked troops under operation
    Limitations
Inventory row, not the logs themselves - establishes that NARA holds logbooks covering these dates, not their content. Inventory dates are log-coverage dates, not commissioning/decommissioning dates. Coverage ends 10/31/1944, about five weeks before the documented UK lease (4 December 1944): sister hulls in the same list (LCI(L)-509, -511, -512) run to 12/5/1944, so the November 1944 segment for this hull appears not to be held or inventoried - a truncated series, not a service claim.

NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down October 1943 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, NJ; launched November 1943; commissioned USS LCI(L)-510, 3 December 1943. Assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater with campaign credit 'Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 25 June 1944'; two photo captions show the ship beached at Normandy in 1944. Decommissioned and leased to the United Kingdom 4 December 1944; served as a unit of the Royal Navy; returned to U.S. Naval custody 27 July 1946; struck from the Naval Register, date unknown; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal; sold 12 November 1947, fate unknown. Earned one battle star for World War II service (American Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal (1), WWII Victory Medal; call sign NQYE). Spec block: 236 t. light / 264 t. landing / 419 t. loaded; 158' 5.5" x 23' 3"; 16 kts max; complement 4 officers + 24 enlisted, troops 6 + 182; five single 20mm guns; two sets of 4 GM 6051-series 71 diesels, 4 per shaft, twin variable-pitch propellers, 2,320 shp; two diesel-drive 30 kW 120V D.C. generators.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (history text credited to Turner Publishing's USS LCI Vol. II), not a primary registry - no DANFS/NHHC entry exists for this hull to cross-check milestones, though the commissioning date is corroborated by the NARA log-inventory begin date. Page captions say 'beached at Normandy in 1944' - they do not name a beach; Omaha specificity circulating elsewhere rests on secondary/commercial sourcing (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. 'Struck' and buyer identity are undocumented by this source.

    Finding
The official USCG Historian's Office roster of the Coast Guard-manned LCI(L) flotilla at Normandy (Flotilla 4/10) lists hulls 83-96, 319-326, 349, and 350 - LCI(L)-510 is not among them. Combined with her documented Normandy campaign credit, her exclusion from the USCG-manned roster indicates U.S. Navy crewing for this hull.

    Limitations
Exclusion-based inference: the roster documents which hulls were Coast Guard-manned, and this hull's absence indicates Navy crewing - it is not an affirmative crewing record for this hull. No asbestos content.

    Finding
A diesel-propelled LCI-351-class landing craft built October-November 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small steel amphibious craft of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery and valve gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and fire-resistant interior/deck compounds in the confined hull volume. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam system - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

NJ Shipbuilding construction trades (1943); crew (1943-44); RN caretaker/operating crew (1944-46); 1947 purchaser unknown
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-510. Names era-standard application types, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. An LCI(L)'s small size and diesel plant imply less asbestos material than a steam combatant - the inference runs to limited scope, not certainty.

    Finding
GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure (fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards), covering 'the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities.' The Navy's 1975 policy removed/replaced only damaged insulation or insulation that had to be removed for repairs; in 1979 this was modified to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - i.e., asbestos insulation was used extensively aboard Navy ships and substitution with nonasbestos materials did not begin until the early 1970s, spanning this hull's 1943 construction and her entire U.S. custody period (1943-47).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum documentation, or verified litigation naming LCI(L)-510 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener queries returned zero opinions and zero dockets for the exact hull string 'LCI(L)-510', and zero opinions and zero dockets for the variant strings 'LCI-510'/'LCI 510'/'LCI(L) 510', on 2026-09-30. CAVEAT: the 'USS LCI(L)-510' prefixed form was throttled by the shared fleet pacing limit mid-session and is logged as blocked, not run - a residual open gap, not a negative result. Secondary sweeps surfaced only excluded-source marketing content generically asserting asbestos aboard WWII landing craft.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference remains reasonable. The deck logs (held, undigitized) and the Maritime Commission disposal file (1947 sale, buyer unknown) are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
