USS LCI(L)-514, an LCI(L)-351-class Landing Craft Infantry (Large), was laid down 5 November 1943 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, N.J.; launched 3 December 1943; commissioned 9 December 1943. In World War II she was assigned first to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater - Invasion of Normandy, 6-25 June 1944, and Invasion of Southern France, 15 August-21 September 1944 - and later to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater under LCI Flotilla Thirty-Seven (LCDR J. P. Moore), LCI Group One Hundred-Ten (LT. G. A. Lyons), LCI Division Two Hundred-Twenty. She was reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Gunboat) LCI(G)-514 on 15 July 1945. Post-war she performed Navy Occupation service (23 October-15 November 1945 and 15 November 1945-12 June 1946) and China service (15 November 1945-12 June 1946). Decommissioning and striking dates are not recorded in the archive listing. She was transferred to the Republic of China 7 February 1948; final fate unknown. She earned two battle stars for WWII service.

    Finding
The Bureau of Ships' official Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. II (NAVSHIPS 250-011, 15 April 1945) provides three distinct records of this hull: (1) the List of Naval Vessels shows LCI(L) 514 among in-service craft with no loss, transfer, or conversion annotation - on the Navy List and in U.S. service as of 15 April 1945; (2) the per-hull build table records LCI(L) 514 built by 'New Jersey S.B. Corp., Barber, N.J.', keel laid 5 November 1943, ship launched 3 December 1943, date of first commission 9 December 1943 - official confirmation of builder and all three build milestones; (3) the LCI(L) characteristics table covers the group 'LCI(L) 351-1098' (the design group containing this hull): length overall 159 ft 0 in, waterline 153 ft 0 in, extreme beam 23 ft 8 in, full-load displacement 387 tons, trial displacement 381 tons, trial speed 14.4 knots (Model Basin estimate), maximum navigational draft 5 ft 8 in, total accommodations 8 officers + 32 enlisted, armament five 20mm A.A. machine guns; propulsion: 2 propellers, G.M. Diesel 6051 series 71 engines, 2,320 shaft horsepower, single GM main reduction gears, two diesel-driven 20 kW 120 V DC ship's-service generators, diesel oil capacity 860 barrels.

NHHC's National Museum of the U.S. Navy describes the LCI(L) type on its LCI(L)-10 photography page: Navy-designed craft launched by the hundreds; approximately 157 feet long, speeds up to 14 knots, crew of 24 officers and men, four 20mm guns; the first version debarked troops by catwalks and ramps while later versions used bow doors; the same hull was modified into mortar, gunboat, and rocket versions and flotilla flagships. NavSource assigns this hull to the LCI(L)-351 class - the later variant group.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The LCI(L) was a diesel-powered beaching craft: the official BuShips Ships' Data 1945 specification for the LCI(L) 351-1098 group records G.M. Diesel 6051-series-71 engines (2,320 shp, two propellers, GM main reduction gears, diesel-driven 20 kW service generators, diesel oil 860 barrels) - no boilers and no steam system. The National Register nomination for the surviving sister-type hull USS LCI-713 (NRIS 07000300, same LCI(L) 351+ design group) describes 1/4-inch steel-plate construction for rapid assembly-line production, eight General Motors 6-71 diesel engines in two banks of four, and dual above-water and underwater engine exhaust systems; the nomination contains no mention of asbestos, insulation, or abatement. The era's dominant shipboard asbestos applications (boiler and steam-line lagging) were therefore absent by design on this craft type; residual era-typical candidate materials (exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, joiner and deck materials, coatings) are not documented for this hull.

Engine-room crew (LCI(G)-514 complement 5 officers + 65 enlisted after conversion); construction trades (New Jersey Shipbuilding, 1943)
    Limitations
The diesel configuration is documented at class level (both sources); the asbestos-relevant material content aboard this hull is not. Absence of boilers/steam removes the largest era-typical asbestos mass, but era-typical smaller applications (exhaust lagging, gaskets, electrical insulation, coatings) are plausible and undocumented - this row bounds the inference, it does not establish presence or absence. The LCI-713 nomination describes a sister hull of the same design group; builder-latitude in construction is acknowledged in that document itself.

Any crew exposure claims would name defendants (builders, manufacturers, operators), not the hull number, so a hull-name negative does not establish that crew members never filed claims. RECAP/docket coverage of wartime-era and early asbestos litigation is inherently thin. A docket-type (type=r) query and a '"landing craft infantry" asbestos OR mesothelioma' opinion query were attempted but the fleet pacing budget blocked completion at session time; logged in ledger.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located. No DANFS entry exists for this hull (the NHHC DANFS URL pattern returns 404 for LCI(L)-514; the HyperWar DANFS mirror page returns 404; NavSource attributes the history to Turner Publishing Vol. II, not DANFS). No asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming the hull was found in the sources searched. The National Register nomination for the same-design-group survivor USS LCI-713 contains no asbestos, insulation, or abatement mention. The hull left U.S. custody by transfer to the Republic of China (1946 custody handover / 1948 formal transfer), foreclosing the U.S.-era survey and abatement documentation channels that generate most hull-level asbestos records.
