    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but its stated history source is a veterans-association book (Turner Publishing 1995). Contains no asbestos or material-content information. 'Struck' and 'decommissioned' are both 'date unknown'. Whether the physical LCI(G) conversion fit was executed aboard this hull, and where, is not stated. No deck-log detail (damage, repairs, availability) is given.

DANFS for this hull: 'LCI(G)-558 was built at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, N.J.; and commissioned 22 February 1944. During World War II, LCI(G)-558 was assigned to Flotilla Six, Group 16, Division 31 of Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet. The ship participated in the landings at Leyte, P.I. on 20 October 1944, Lingayen Gulf 4-18 January 1945, the landing at Nasugbu, P.I. 31 January-13 February 1945, and the assault and occupation of Okinawa 25 March-24 June 1945. After the war, LCI(G)-558 was declared surplus and sold to the Netherlands East Indies 22 May 1946. LCI(G)-558 was awarded four battle stars for World War II service.' Limitations
The ibiblio transcription carries a header/spec-block artifact: its title and spec line are mislabeled 'LCI(G)-588' while the narrative text, assignment, campaigns, disposal, and battle stars all match LCI(G)-558's documented record - treated as a transcription typo, not a second hull. Live NHHC DANFS URLs for this craft 404 (checked 2026-09-30); verbatim transcription used. Nasugbu end date here (13 February) conflicts with NavSource's campaign table (2 February) - see gaps. Disposal wording 'sold to the Netherlands East Indies' differs from NavSource's 'State Department / Indonesia' - see gaps. No asbestos content.

NARA Special List 44 lists Navy deck logs held for this hull: 'LCI(L)(G)-558 2/22/1944 6/30/1945' (PDF page 18, 2 logbooks per the printed edition's logbook-count column - verified on the SL44 scan, printed page 344, and by pdftotext extraction of the NARA PDF) - i.e., logbooks covering commissioning day through 30 June 1945 are in NARA custody (RG 24 deck logs). These are coverage dates, not commissioning/decommissioning dates; the 2/22/1944 start coincides with the documented commissioning date and the 6/30/1945 end is the SL44 accession boundary for most listed craft, not a service-termination date.

    Limitations
Archival lead only: SL44 establishes that logbooks exist and their coverage span; the log text itself was not examined (WWII-era LCI deck logs are not confirmed digitized in the NARA Catalog - catalog is JS-rendered and could not be API-queried this session). The coverage end precedes the 1946 disposal; decommission and strike dates are not established by this source. The PDF's (G)-variant designation 'LCI(L)(G)-558' reflects the hull's reclassified designation.

    Finding
The hull's own action report documents the Nasugbu operation: USS LCI(G)558, with Commander LCI(G) Group 16 embarked, was part of Task Unit 78.2.6 (CTU Commander Day USN, flagship LCI(R)-73) within Task Group 78.2 (COMPHIBGROUP 8, Rear Admiral Fechteler, USS Spencer) supporting the 31 January 1945 landing of 11th Airborne Division elements at Nasugbu, Batangas Province, Luzon. Assigned mission: accompany LCI(R)-73 to Nasugbu Point furnishing navigational fixes and radar rocket ranges, fire 150 rockets on the point, take station on the left flank of the beach assault lane, and engage targets of opportunity or call fire. The report records that in darkness the ship tracked the wrong rocket ship (LCI(R)-34 mistaken for LCI(R)-73), was not permitted to fire on Nasugbu Point at 0712, took left-flank station at 0740, and later fired on an enemy light-machine-gun position on Nasugbu Point at 1900 in company with LCI(G)-42; on 1 February she entered Talin Bay with LCI(G)-442 and LCI(R)-73 hunting enemy 'Q' suicide boats. Ordnance expended in the operation: 1,088 rounds 40mm, 766 rounds 20mm, 475 rounds .50 cal, and 155 4.5-inch barrage rockets. No battle damage; no personnel lost or wounded. The ship departed to Mindoro 2 February (Mangarin Bay) and for Leyte 3 February 1945.

    Limitations
Third-party transcription of a declassified NARA action report (the transcriber notes the original is online at the National Archives); the NARA original is authoritative but was not independently fetched this session - transcription used as the access copy. Documentary richness is tactical/operational; it contains no asbestos, material, or maintenance-condition content and does not describe interior spaces. 'HAROLD S. Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A 1944 diesel-powered amphibious landing craft sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type were engine and diesel-exhaust lagging and muffler insulation, machinery gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, and felt/pad insulation in accommodation spaces. The class carried no steam plant (two sets of 4 GM diesels, 4 per shaft, twin variable-pitch screws) - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Documented splinter armor is a 2-inch 'plastic' material, not an asbestos application.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-558 / LCI(G)-558 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener authenticated API returned 0 results for the phrase-exact '"LCI(L)-558"' and '"LCI(G)-558"' opinion queries; an earlier unquoted opinion query returned 632 hits that are entirely name collisions ('LCI International'/'LCI Communications' telecom entities and unrelated docket numbers - zero ship, Navy, or asbestos mentions). The combined RECAP-docket query was throttled by fleet pacing - see search_ledger. Secondary sweeps surfaced only encyclopedic list coverage (uboat.net, Sons of Liberty Museum placeholder page) and generic 'LCI asbestos' marketing material asserting era use without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 naval craft is consistent with era-standard insulation use. The litigation repository search is partially open: the RECAP-docket query was throttled by fleet pacing, not run - treat docket-level litigation status as not fully ruled out (see search_ledger and gaps). Deck logs (RG 24, coverage through 1945-06-30), BuShips contract/specification records, and any disposal documentation are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
