NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - dates generally track official records but the page is not a primary registry; key claims are independently corroborated in this record (builder/delivery/disposition by the shipbuilding-history build table; the 29 March 1945 kamikaze attack by the hull's own digitized action report - ev-04; the Lingayen and Okinawa operations by digitized NARA action reports - ev-03, ev-04, ev-05). Contains no asbestos or material content. Light displacement printed 246 t. on this page vs 236 t. on sister-hull pages of the same class - minor unresolved variance.

The companion New Jersey Shipbuilding yard page lists 'LCI(L) | 560 | US Navy | Landing Craft | Feb-44 | Struck 1946' - a stricken-year claim NavSource does not carry (see gaps). Surrounding rows (558-562) show the same New Jersey Shipbuilding/Barber block: 558 to the Netherlands East Indies 1946, 559 to the Netherlands East Indies 1946, 561 to NDRF 1948, 562 sold 1946.

    Finding
Three commanding-officer action reports authored aboard this hull were read via OCR. (1) Okinawa report (24 Jun 1945): the ship moved to the objective 'as a part of a unit designated as GUNBOAT SUPPORT DIVISION ONE (LCI(G)'s 558, 452, 561, 751, 559, 560) with LT. COMMANDER RICKABAUGH, COMMANDER LCI(G) GROUP SIXTEEN in Charge,' providing close-in fire support including rocket fire on Kerama Retto beaches; the kamikaze attack is documented verbatim: 'At 0615-I (29 MARCH, 1945) this ship was attacked by three (3) enemy planes ... One, passing close by the bow, was shot down; a second passed close above the mast and thence inland; the third crashed the mast and conn at 0618-I. Generally, all radio and visual communication facilities were destroyed. Specifically, the following equipment was destroyed or damaged: Mast (including radar, BK, BL, TCS radio, recognition lights, all flag[s]...)' - after repairs alongside a tender she ran smoke and anti-small-craft patrol stations in Kerama Retto and along eastern Okinawa (stations 139/140, 142/143, 143/144, 145) through 22 June 1945, when the island was secured and she was relieved for rear-area duty in Nakagusuku Wan. (2) Luzon report (25 Jan 1945): participant in the Luzon operation; the Lingayen gunboat unit (LCI(G)s 558, 559, 560, 751 and division mates, Lt. Cmdr. Rickabaugh) staged at Hollandia, New Guinea 26-30 December 1944 and departed Leyte Gulf for Lingayen Gulf in company with the Minesweeping and Hydrographic Group (the report text attaches a 2 January 1945 date to the unit assignment); intermittent enemy air raids of two- and three-plane groups 2-5 January 1945 caused no damage to this hull. (3) Patrol report (8 May 1945, covering 8-12 April): detached from Gunboat Support Division One (TU 52.17.1) to Gunboat Support Division Four (TU 52.18.1, Lt. Cmdr. Robinson) 8 April 1945; patrol station 110 south and east of Ie Shima; investigated an unidentified craft (proved USS LCI(G)-467); relieved by USS LCI(G)-561 and proceeded to Kerama Kaikyo anchorage for logistics.

    Limitations
Primary documents authored by the hull's commanding officer - OCR-verified content, not just catalog metadata. The scans carry NARA declassification stamps; they are NavSource-hosted copies corresponding to NARA RG 38 file units (the patrol report window matches NAID 77485205 4/8-12/45; the Okinawa report window matches NAID 140083908 3/26/45-6/22/45 - internal coverage 8 Mar-22 Jun per the report text). OCR quality on microfilm-era typewriter copy is imperfect; quoted text is the highest-confidence reading but minor transcription artifacts are possible. Operational records - no asbestos or material content.

A deck log is an operational record, not a material survey; it would document location/moorage and noteworthy events, not insulation content. Post-June-1945 coverage is not listed in SL44.

CORRECTION: the published secondary literature dates this hull's kamikaze attack 'the morning of 29 April' (Rielly ch. 9: 'LCI(G) 560, a part of TU 52.17.1, was assigned to cover operations of UDT 17 at Green Beach on the morning of 29 April. As she cruised the area she came under attack at 0615 by a combination of three Nates and a Val... One of the planes clipped her conning tower but only one man was injured'), and elsewhere in the same chapter describes it as 'minor damage and two injuries when her mast was clipped by a kamikaze' during the taking of the Kerama Retto islands. The hull's own action report dates the attack 0615-I on 29 MARCH 1945 (three planes; the third 'crashed the mast and conn at 0618-I'), and NARA catalogs her AA-action report under 3/29/45 (NAID 101777400). The 'April' printing is also internally inconsistent with the book's own Kerama Retto framing (UDT beach coverage ran 28-31 March). The injury count in the same source varies between one and two. The March date is carried throughout this record; NavSource's Combat Action Ribbon notation '29-29 March 1945' and photo captions '28-29 March' bracket the same event.

A diesel-powered landing craft built January-February 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing in engine and piping systems, electrical insulation on wiring and in control panels, and thermal insulation in the confined machinery spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-560 / LCI(G)-560 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched this session via the authenticated helper - 'LCI(G)-560' OR 'LCI(L)-560' OR 'LCI-560' returned zero opinions (type=o) and zero dockets (type=r), HTTP 200 both - a genuine negative, not a throttle. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm marketing material for this numbered hull. The hull's 1947 sale (buyer and fate unknown) forecloses the usual US-side abatement/museum/scrapping documentation trail that produces ship-specific asbestos records.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener indexes published litigation - a no-result does not rule out unfiled, settled, or differently-captioned claims. Undigitized deck logs (SL44 window 2/25/1944-6/30/1945), NJSB build records, the CNO correspondence folder NAID 6846965, and any 1947 sale/disposal file are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
