- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (underlying history credited to Turner Publishing 1995), not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records but are not independently verified here. Contains no asbestos or material content. 'Fate unknown' means no documented foreign transfer or scrapping is claimed by this source.

- Finding
- Documents this hull in the 3 May 1944 convoy UGS-41 sailing from Hampton Roads: USS LCI(L)-563 under Ens. P. App, USNR, sailed in company with LCI(L)-562, -581, -582, -583, -584, -585, -586, and -664 through -671, escorted by Task Force 62; the LCI(L)s were detached to Bizerta on 24 May 1944 - the transit that placed the craft in the Mediterranean ahead of the southern France operation. Table independently records: built by New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp. (Barber, New Jersey); laid down 25 January 1944; launched 25 February 1944; commissioned 1 March 1944; reclassified LCI(G), Landing Craft Guns, 15 July 1945.

- Limitations
- uboat.net is a secondary specialist compilation built from convoy commodore/escort reports; not a primary registry. Its laid-down date (25 January 1944) conflicts with NavSource (26 January 1944) - carried in gaps, unresolved. Names a commanding officer at one date only; no command listing otherwise. - Finding
- NARA's deck-log finding aid lists two logbooks for LCI(L)-563 covering 1 March 1944 through 30 June 1945 - the full commissioned US Navy service from commissioning through the end of the war in Europe and into the Pacific deployment. The logs are physical records at the National Archives (RG 24); they are the primary-source lead for crew rosters, operations, and any yard availabilities.

- All hands aboard, March 1944-June 1945
- Limitations
- The finding aid lists log coverage only - not log content; the underlying logs were not reviewed. Coverage ends 30 June 1945: any logs for July 1945-1946 (post-LCI(G) reclassification through decommissioning and disposal) are not listed in this source. The cited image is a digitized page of the 1978 NARA publication hosted at genealogycenter.net (ACPL), not on archives.gov.

- Finding
- A named enlisted crew member is documented aboard this hull: Victor E. Rey, U.S. Navy, enlisted 1943-1945, highest rank Electrician's Mate Second Class, service units including USS LCI-563 (Landing Craft Infantry) alongside USS Warrington (DD 843), USS LCI(L)-237, and USS LCI-194; service locations span the European Theater (North Africa, Anzio, Naples, Livorno). The collection holds 519 correspondence items (1943-1945), clippings, printed matter, and photographs - a primary-source personnel archive for this hull's wartime complement.

- Limitations
- Establishes that a named individual served aboard LCI-563 during 1943-1945; the collection record does not date his tour aboard this hull specifically or describe conditions aboard. NOT an exposure record - no asbestos claim is made or implied for Rey or any individual.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The builder's production table lists hull 563: 'LCI(L) 563, US Navy, Landing Craft, Mar-44, Struck 1946' - confirming the builder and 1946 striking. Yard context documented: New Jersey Shipbuilding was an assembly line for LCIs on Arthur Kill at Barber (later absorbed into Perth Amboy, now Maurer); management was taken over by Todd Shipyards in 1942 at the Navy's request; the yard closed after the war.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious landing craft built in early 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were thermal and acoustic insulation in the engine spaces, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing on fuel, lube-oil, and cooling systems, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler and steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, plans, or work package located for LCI(L)-563/LCI(G)-563. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity and no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 'Highlights' section
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented Navy asbestos use and worker-protection policy: the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships, and its 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - documenting that asbestos substitution did not begin until the early 1970s, well after this hull's construction and entire service life.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-563 / LCI(G)-563 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion-index queries for 'LCI(L)-563' and 'LCI-563' returned zero hits; the RECAP docket index and the 'LCI(G)-563' opinion query could not be run this session - fleet-wide pacing budget momentarily spent (logged blocked, not as negative results).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent materials are reasonably inferred but not ship-proven. Litigation coverage is partial: opinion indexes were clean on two name variants, but the docket index and the LCI(G) variant remain open. The 1944-45 deck logs (NARA RG 24, undigitized) are the primary follow-on lead. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
