- Documented for this hull: laid down 29 January 1944 at New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber, NJ; launched 29 February 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-566, 4 March 1944, LTjg. G. W. Hartland, USNR, in command (30 May 1945 register notation); reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Gunboat) LCI(G)-566, 15 June 1944. Assigned Asiatic-Pacific Theater: LCI(G) Flotilla Six (CDR A. R. Montgomery, USN), LCI Group Seventeen (LCDR C. F. Robinson, USNR), LCI Division Thirty-Three. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register 5 June 1946; sold 16 January 1947; final disposition, fate unknown. Spec block: displacement 216 t. light / 234 t. landing / 389 t. loaded; length 158' 5.5"; beam 23' 3"; LCI(L) complement 3 officers + 21 enlisted, LCI(G) complement 5 officers + 65 enlisted; troop capacity 6 officers + 182 enlisted; LCI(L) armament four single 20mm guns plus two .50cal machine guns; LCI(G) armament two 40mm guns, four 20mm guns, six .50cal machine guns, ten Mk7 rocket launchers; propulsion two sets of four General Motors diesel engines (four per shaft), 1,600 BHP, twin variable-pitch propellers. Awards shown: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal; NO campaign table and no battle stars displayed - unlike sister ships of the same division (e.g., LCI(G)-466) whose pages carry credited campaigns. No photographs of this hull are held.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - the history section is credited to the Turner Publishing LCI book, not a primary registry; milestone dates generally track official records but carry transcription risk. The parenthetical '(30 May 1945)' beside Hartland's name is a directory/register-style notation, not explained on the page. Absence of a campaign table documents no credited operations in this compilation - it does not prove the ship conducted no combat operations; deck logs are the open lead. Contains no asbestos or material-content information.

- Finding
- The official Navy chronology records for Tuesday 29 August 1944: 'Infantry landing craft LCI-566 is damaged by grounding, south of Oahu, 20°56'N, 157°00'E.' - a documented damage event during this hull's westward transit toward the combat zone, roughly two months after her LCI(G) reclassification. Separately, the Bureau of Ships landing-ships table (US Navy Landing Ships/Craft, 1940-1945) lists LCI(G)-566 in commission 1944-45 with no loss notation.

- Population
- Ship's company aboard during grounding and any repair crew (Aug-Sep 1944)
- Limitations
- The printed longitude (157°00'E) is inconsistent with 'south of Oahu' - Oahu is at approximately 157°58'W; the 'E' is a transcription or source typo and the coordinate is quoted verbatim as published. The chronology entry says nothing about extent of damage, repair location, or duration out of service - any repair event and its material-disturbance implications are undocumented inference. The ships table gives a commission window only - no operations detail. Contains no asbestos or material-content information.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A steel-hulled diesel-powered landing craft built in early 1944 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, NJ sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small combatant of this type and period were engine-exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined hull volume. As a diesel-powered craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her '2-inch plastic splinter protection' armor is not an asbestos product. The LCI(G) gunboat conversion (additional guns, ten Mk7 rocket launchers, heavier crew) reworked armament and internal spaces within the same era-materials environment.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LCI(L)-566/LCI(G)-566. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. The builder yard (New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ) has no located asbestos-specific documentation of its own - inference rests on era and Navy practice, not yard records.

- Rielly Appendix II, 'LCI(L) Builders' and 'LCI(L) Conversion Locations' lists (page 16 of the mirrored text)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Rielly's Appendix II lists this hull under New Jersey Shipbuilding Corporation, Barber (Perth Amboy), NJ production ('LCI(L)s ... 563-568 ...' covers 566) and lists her gunboat conversion under TWO locations: 'Portsmouth, VA: LCI(G)s 422, 442, 558-561, 565-567, 568, 580, 751' and 'West Coast Yards (General): LCI(G)s 42-46, 195, 234, 422, 466, 514, 517, 528, 566, 570-579, 751.' The appendix notes 'an individual ship may be listed twice' because conversions could be done in a combination of yards - so the double listing plausibly reflects two-stage conversion work (Portsmouth VA plus an unidentified West Coast yard) rather than an error, though it cannot be resolved from this source alone.

- Population
- Conversion-yard trades, Portsmouth VA and unidentified West Coast yard(s) (spring-summer 1944)
- Limitations
- Published secondary history accessed via a third-party text mirror (erenow.org) - the McFarland book is the real source; the mirror is an access convenience. 'Portsmouth, VA' does not name the specific yard - Norfolk Naval Shipyard is located in Portsmouth but is not identified by Rielly as the conversion site, so no related_shipyards slug is asserted. The 'West Coast Yards (General)' grouping is explicitly unattributed. Conversion work (gun tubs, splinter protection, rocket-launcher mounts, reworked accommodation) is a yard-level material-disturbance event, but no work package or material list for this hull's conversion was located. Contains no asbestos content.

- The veterans' association memorial record names two enlisted crew of this hull: 'RM3 Robert D. Deviney, USNR - LCI(L) 566, LCI (G) 457, LST 612 - WWII Pacific Theater - From sons Bob Jr., Mark, Steve & Lance'; the June 2017 Elsie Item newsletter corrects a prior listing, stating 'DeViney actually, served on LCI 457 and 566. He was part of the commissioning of LST 612 before transferring to LCI duty.' A second memorial entry records 'Harvey W. Wright Jr. Rdm 2/c - The Naval Amphibious Corps - USN LCI (G) 752 & 566.'

- Population
- RM3 Robert D. Deviney USNR; Rdm 2/c Harvey W. Wright Jr. USN; ship's company generally
- Limitations
- Self-reported veterans' memorial data (family-submitted inscriptions and a newsletter correction) - crew service attribution is plausible and internally consistent but not an official muster record; NARA muster rolls (RG 24) and the digitized deck logs would be the authoritative personnel confirmation. A memorial inscription is not an exposure record and establishes nothing about materials aboard the hull.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS LCI(L)-566 / LCI(G)-566 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener exact-phrase searches for all designation variants ('LCI(L)-566', 'LCI-566', 'LCI(G)-566') returned zero hits at both opinion (type=o) and docket (type=r) level, and a '"566" "landing craft" asbestos' opinion query returned zero (2026-09-30, authenticated API v4). Secondary web sweep surfaced no asbestos claim of any kind for this hull - not even law-firm marketing listicles.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the Navy's asbestos era and was sold into private hands in 1947 with final fate unknown, leaving no post-service material record and no surviving hull to survey. CourtListener designation-string searches cannot reach unindexed PACER filings or state-court complaints that never name the hull verbatim. Deck logs (NARA College Park, coverage verified), BuShips construction records, and any 1947 sale documents are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
