- Finding
- The official NARA inventory of Navy logbooks lists deck logs for LCI(L)(G)-568 covering 3/14/1944 through 6/30/1945 (PDF page 18 of the by-ship-number list). The coverage start date equals her commissioning date. This is the wartime Navy's own log inventory establishing in-scope service for this hull.

- Log coverage dates are not commissioning/decommissioning dates - they document that logs exist and the coverage window, not that service ended on 6/30/1945. The logs themselves are not digitized (not on NARA's digitized deck-log list); they are RG 24 textual records at Archives II, College Park. Contains no asbestos content.

- Documented for this hull: laid down 5 February 1944 at New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber, N.J.; launched 2 March 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-568 on 14 March 1944, 'LT. H. H. Brown USNR in command (May 1945)'; reclassified Landing Craft Infantry (Guns) LCI(G)-568 on 15 June 1944 - an early gunboat conversion preceding all of her combat service. Asiatic-Pacific campaigns: Leyte operation (Leyte landings 20 October 1944; Pegun, Bras and Fanildo Island (Mapia Islands Group) landings 15-18 November 1944); Luzon operation (Lingayen Gulf landings 7 January 1945); Okinawa Gunto operation (assault and occupation 1 April-24 June 1945). During Okinawa she came under LCI Flotilla Six (CDR A. R. Montgomery USN), LCI Group Sixteen (LCDR R. S. Richabaugh USNR), LCI Division Thirty-Two. Decommissioned, date unknown; struck from the Naval Register in 1946; sold 13 January 1947; final disposition 'fate unknown'. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track official sources but the cited underlying work is a veterans' association history volume, not a Navy record. Contains no asbestos content. 'Decommissioned, date unknown' and 'fate unknown' are carried verbatim - status between the end of log coverage (6/30/1945) and the 1946 striking is undocumented, and the buyer/fate after the 13 January 1947 sale is undocumented.

- Finding
- Action-report-based combat history for this hull. Conversion: Rielly's appendix lists LCI(L)-568 among the LCI(L)s converted to gunboats at Portsmouth, VA. Leyte (20 Oct 1944): in TU 79.7.1 under LCDR Robert S. Rickabaugh providing close-in fire support for the Violet and Yellow Beaches (7th Infantry Division sector), firing rocket salvos and strafing; overnight 25-26 October she laid smoke covering her area. Mapia Islands (15-18 Nov 1944): in Close Support Unit TU 78.14.31, Red Beach attack group at Pegun Island (LCI(G)s 567(F), 568, 580, 407 under LCDR J. D. Starkus), staged from Morotai. Luzon: during the 7 January 1945 approach a Japanese aircraft that had strafed LCI(G) 567 was fired on by LCI(G)s 564 and 568 and LCI(L) 676 and shot down; at the Lingayen landings LCI(G)s 565, 567, 568, 580 and three mortar gunboats strafed ahead of the 129th RCT. Okinawa: strafed Purple Beach, Tokashiki Shima (Gunboat Support Unit 52.18.2, 27-28 March); screening stations 116/117 north of Motobu Peninsula 1-3 April; on 2 April a Japanese plane crash-dived into the after part of her gun deck, destroyed two 20mm guns, killed one man and wounded three (one seriously) - her wounded were taken aboard USS Wilson (DD-408) for transfer to a hospital ship and she returned to Kerama Retto for repairs; subsequently covered UDT operations (TU 57.18.1 under LCDR Robinson) and the Ie Shima assault of 16 April (Gunboat Support Division Five), where she grounded briefly on a reef and a near-miss 5-inch shell dented her forward splinter shield, no injuries. Crew corroboration: storekeeper Joseph A. Dumenigo, pointer on the forward 40mm gun at general quarters (interviews 17 January and 17 February 2011).

Text accessed via the erenow.org mirror; pagination refers to the print edition. Rielly's two passages on the 2 April attack differ on aircraft type (Tony/Judy vs Zeke/Oscar) and shootdown-vs-crash detail; casualty count (1 killed, 3 wounded) is consistent - see gaps. - Finding
- A diesel-powered landing craft built February-March 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a craft of this type and period were diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch brake linings. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships; its 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs, modified in 1979 to include selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming LCI(L)-568/LCI(G)-568 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener authenticated API v4 searches completed 2026-09-30 returned zero opinion hits for both the exact-designation query and the variant-spelling query ('LCI 568', 'LCIL-568', 'LCI(L) 568', 'LCI(G) 568', 'LCIG-568'), and zero docket hits for the exact designations. The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced is law-firm marketing content for the LCI type generally, asserting asbestos on Navy/amphibious ships without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- ODU holds a ship-data file collection (Heflin & Williams) whose Volume 02 spans hulls LCI(L)-351 through LCI(L)-1098 - a range including this hull - with files organized by ship class, hull designation, and hull number. Separately, Rielly's notes cite two ship-specific wartime documents: 'USS LCI(G) 568, No Serial, Action Report, no date' (Leyte) and 'USS LCI(G) 568, Serial 5-45, Anti-aircraft Action Report, 7 April 1945' - action reports held in NARA's WWII operational records. Together with the undigitized NARA RG 24 deck logs (coverage 3/14/1944-6/30/1945 per Special List 44), these are the located archival paths most likely to hold ship-specific files.
