- Limitations
- Volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; its milestone dates generally track official records but its laid-down date (18 Feb 1944) conflicts with the official Ships' Data build table (17 Feb 1944 - carried). Its 'Ormoc Bay landings, 7-8 December 1944' campaign credit and derived 'one battle star' are contradicted by the contemporaneous war diary of her own flotilla (see ev-05 correction row) - the credit is carried here as NavSource's claim only, disputed. 'Laid up ... March 1946' conflicts with its own China-service window ending 14 March 1946 - unresolved, in gaps. Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- The official NARA deck-log inventory lists 'LCI(L)(FF)-575' with three logbooks covering Mar. 20, 1944 - Nov. 30, 1945. Verified by direct inspection of the scanned page (printed p. 345): the entire wartime run is filed under the LCI(L)(FF) designation. These are log-coverage dates establishing in-scope wartime service - not, by themselves, commissioning or decommissioning dates. Neighboring rows mark sister conversions (e.g., LCI(L)(G)-574, LCI(L)(M)-582) - the inventory is filed by final designation.

- Two digitized muster-roll file units name this hull - 'LCI(L) 575' and 'LC(FF) 575' - confirming separate crew-roster runs under both designations (the redesignation boundary 31 Dec 1944). Muster rolls document the crew population aboard by name and rating - the primary source for any future crew-level exposure research.

- CORRECTION (primary contemporaneous document, read via OCR of the scanned diary pages): As of 1 December 1944 LCI(L)-575 was in LCI(L) Group 27 of LCI(L) Flotilla NINE, Amphibious Training Command, U.S. ATLANTIC Fleet, training LCI(L) and LCS(L)(3) crews afloat out of the Chesapeake Bay area (ATB Solomons, Md.): 'LCI(L) Group 27 (LCI(L)s 531, 532, 533, 534(GF), 535, 536, 569, 570, 571, 572, 573, 574, 575 and 576).' The diary reports that 'the majority of the ships of this Flotilla will be used as flagships for other LCI(L), LCS(L)(3) and LSM Flotillas already overseas,' and that ComPhibTraLant speedletter serial S5181 of 21 December 1944 'extended the navy yard availability of the following ships to the dates indicated: LCI(L) 575, 21 December.' This places the hull in stateside navy-yard availability through 21 December 1944 - incompatible with the widely-republished claim (NavSource; NAVPERS-15,790-derived awards mirrors) that she participated in the Ormoc Bay landings, Leyte, 7-8 December 1944. The campaign credit and the 'one battle star' that rests on it are disputed by this primary record.

- Limitations
- The war diary is the contemporaneous operational record and outweighs a post-war awards-list line, but the conflict is recorded rather than resolved: NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953) is the Navy's official awards compilation and its P31-7 Ormoc entry for 'LCI 575' may reflect an administrative credit or a listing error - unresolvable without the awards manual's full context; carried as disputed. OCR of the scan was clean enough to verify the roster list and the availability entry verbatim (diary OCR renders 'LCI' as 'ICI'); no other December movements of this hull appear in the diary. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- The hull designation appears in the extracted text of digitized flotilla war diaries across her service arc: her own Atlantic training formation (LCI(L) Flotilla 9 / Group 27, Aug-Dec 1944), then LCI(L) Flotilla 35 in April-May 1945 (a Pacific amphibious flotilla - consistent with the post-conversion overseas assignment the Flotilla 9 diary described), and LST Flotilla 8 diaries of July-November 1945 (Far East occupation period). These hits map the hull's command chain across the LCI(L)-to-LC(FF) transition and Pacific deployment.

- Finding
- Federal documentation of the LCI(L)-351 class and of this hull's builder: New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp. was incorporated in 1942 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Barber Asphalt Corp., leased the idled Perth Amboy asphalt plant on the Arthur Kill, prefabricated hull and deckhouse sections at a factory 14 miles away for sequential ways assembly, employed about 2,500 workers (later Todd-managed), produced 375 LCI(L)s, and was dismantled after the war. HAER gives the yard's documented hull runs - LCI(L)s 239-318, 423-657, 782-821, and 866-884 - which include hull 575, corroborating the official build table. Class data: Bureau of Ships design (working plans by George Lawley & Son); eight 6-71 GM diesel engines; ~159 ft o.a., 387 long tons loaded; complement 4 officers + 24 sailors, troop load 9 officers + 196 enlisted per the wartime guide; LCI(L)-351-and-later deckhouse/pilot-house redesign. It also cites the underlying BuShips document - 'Detail and Special Specifications for Building Landing Craft Infantry (Large) LCI(L) 351-542' (1943) - held in NARA RG 19, the open lead that could itemize specified insulating materials for the class.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A steel-hulled diesel landing craft built Feb-Mar 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a craft of this type and period were thermal insulation in machinery spaces and accommodation areas, diesel-engine exhaust lagging, pipe lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and her small size bounds the magnitude. The wartime 'critical materials to be avoided' framing in the BuShips-informed HAER narrative does not exclude asbestos - asbestos was treated by the wartime Navy as a strategic shipbuilding material, not a dispensable refinement.

CourtListener returned zero opinion results and zero docket results for all designation variants; a broad 'LCI asbestos' opinion sweep surfaced only name collisions (e.g., the silica MDL). No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NHHC 404s); NVR does not cover pre-1987 disposals. The only 'asbestos aboard' web material is law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard LCIs generally without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1944 construction is era-consistent with asbestos use. The litigation negative is verified for exact hull designations but cannot certify zero filings: undigitized dockets, crew-name suits that never print the hull, and MDL-875 vessel schedules are outside what name search proves. One variant query ('LC(FF)' asbestos) was declined by the fleet request pacer - residual gap noted in ledger sl-13. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
