Commissioned USS LCI(L)-580, 28 March 1944, LT E. S. Smith USNR in command (as of May 1945); reclassified LCI(G)-580 on 15 June 1944; assigned to LCI Flotilla Six / LCI Group Sixteen / LCI Division Thirty-Two in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Campaigns: Leyte landings 20 Oct 1944; Pegun/Bras/Fanildo Islands (Mapia group) landings 15-18 Nov 1944; Lingayen Gulf 7 Jan 1945; Nasugbu 31 Jan-2 Feb 1945; Okinawa Gunto 1 Apr-24 Jun 1945. Decommissioned 25 June 1946; stricken 15 August 1946; sold 13 January 1947; fate unknown. Four battle stars. Limitations
Compiled secondary record (Turner volume); the build/milestone dates agree with BuShips Ships' Data and the campaign list with the ship's own NARA-digitized action reports, but the post-war milestones (decommissioning, stricken, sale) and 'fate unknown' rest on NavSource alone. Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding
Special List 44 lists Navy deck logs for this hull under the designation 'LCI(L)(G)-580' covering 3/28/1944-6/30/1945 - from commissioning through just past the Okinawa operation. The logs exist at NARA College Park (RG 24); they are not in NARA's online deck-log index and are undigitized.

    Limitations
Establishes the existence and custody span of the deck logs, not their content. Log coverage dates are not ship milestones; decommissioning came later (25 Jun 1946). The 6/30/1945 end date reflects the list's WWII-era cutoff convention, not any event in the ship's life.

    Finding
The ship's own digitized action reports document all four combat campaigns. The Nasugbu report (signed E.S. Smith, Lt., USNR, 2 Feb 1945) records: departed Leyte 1700 on 27 Jan; on the line of departure 0745 on 31 Jan; 40mm fire at 0808 and a rocket salvo at 0811; 26 rockets, 408 rounds 40mm, 420 rounds 20mm expended; inner-screen anchorage 1,500 yards off Nasugbu beach until 0300 on 2 Feb; rocket-system electrical failure limited firing to 26 of 288 loaded rockets (with the same fault 'on 9 January 1945 at Lingayen'); gyro compass, SO8 radar, and one bilge pump out of order; no casualties to ship or personnel. Rickabaugh USNR), LCI Division 32 (G), commanded by Lt. (jg) E. S. Smith (USNR) - confirming the NavSource flotilla/group/division assignment ship-specifically as of 1 May 1945.

    Limitations
A single-date organizational snapshot: it documents the command structure and CO at 1 May 1945 only, and contains no asbestos or material content. The CO is listed as 'Lt. (jg)' here while the ship's own February 1945 action report is signed 'Lt.' - a rank-printing variant carried in gaps.

Diesel 6051 Series 71' engines through single GM main reduction gears; two diesel 30 kW 120 V DC ship's-service generators; diesel fuel 860 bbl. Class-level spec sheet: documents the design plant and bounds the asbestos-relevant systems (diesel machinery/exhaust, gaskets, electrical, interior insulation) but names no materials and no asbestos content; the printed shaft horsepower (1,320) is a probable misprint against the same volume's 2,320 for the identical LCI(L) plant - see ev-09.

AWM holds an aerial photograph of this hull showing deck layout; the official caption describes 40mm Bofors AA guns in the bow and at the forward end of the superstructure, 20mm Oerlikon AA guns in the well deck forward and on the after end of the superstructure, and masthead radar - a hull-specific armament record differing in detail from both the NavSource spec block and the SDB class table (fits varied by period).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The SDB LCI(G) table prints shaft horsepower as '1,320' for the GM Diesel 6051 Series 71 plant, while the same volume's LCI(L) table for the identical machinery (and NavSource, carrying the same plant) prints 2,320. The verified page image shows '1,320' is a printed figure, not an OCR artifact - a probable wartime misprint; this record carries 2,320 shp.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LCI(L)-580 / LCI(G)-580 / LCI(L)(G)-580 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero results for every hull designation in both opinions and dockets; generic-designation sweeps surfaced only name collisions (a Texas appellate case on 'LCI(G)' and a Ninth Circuit civil case on 'USS LCI'), neither asbestos-related.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 Navy landing craft sits squarely inside the documented asbestos-use era. Deck logs (RG 24), builder yard records (New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ - defunct), and any post-sale material records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
