Assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater; participated in the invasion of southern France, 15 August to 9 September 1944. Decommissioned and transferred as part of the Lend-Lease program to the Soviet Union at Cold Bay, Alaska, 14 June 1945. Struck from the Naval Register in 1955. Earned one battle star for World War II service; awards listed are American Campaign Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal (1 star), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (here sourced to the Turner Publishing LCI volume), not a primary registry - milestone dates corroborated this session by NARA Special List 44 (commissioning window) and the NHHC-published Project Hula appendix (transfer date), but the printed Soviet designation DS-34 is contradicted by that appendix (see ev-05; carried here as reported, corrected there). No commanding officers or intermediate ports are given between commissioning and transfer. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
The official NARA inventory lists Navy deck logs for LCI(L)-587 covering 4/8/1944 through 6/13/1945 - logs held in Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Record Group 24, Entry 118 (National Archives Identifier 581208). The coverage window corroborates this hull's commissioned U.S. Navy service exactly: beginning on its 8 April 1944 commissioning date and ending the day before its 14 June 1945 transfer to the Soviet Union.

    Limitations
An inventory row, not the logs themselves - it establishes that logbooks for this hull exist at NARA for the stated dates, not their contents. The hull does not appear in NARA's digitized deck-log index (archives.gov navy-online list checked 2026-09-30), so the logs are undigitized physical holdings at Archives II, College Park; any operational detail inside them (transit route, ports, casualties, material notes) is unexamined here.

    Finding
The NHHC-published transfer table lists this hull by number: 'LCI(L) 587 -> DS-33 | 14 June | 1956-stricken' - i.e., transferred at Cold Bay on 14 June 1945 in the second LCI(L) group (with LCI(L)-586 -> DS-37), and struck from the Soviet naval list in 1956 rather than returned to U.S. custody. The appendix assigns DS-34 to LCI(L)-590, transferred in the 10 June group. Russell's narrative documents that Navy Detachment 3294 trained roughly 12,000 Soviet personnel and transferred 149 ships and craft at Cold Bay, including 30 large infantry landing craft, and that five Project Hula ex-LCI(L)s - DS-1 (ex-LCI(L)-672), DS-5 (ex-LCI(L)-525), DS-9 (ex-LCI(L)-554), DS-43 (ex-LCI(L)-943), and DS-47 (ex-LCI(L)-671) - were sunk by Japanese coastal artillery on 18 August 1945 at Shumshu; DS-33 is not among them.

    Limitations
Cited via a faithful HTML transcription of the official 1997 Naval Historical Center monograph (the NHHC site does not host the text; live NHHC URL not located). The appendix row establishes transfer date, Soviet designation, and Soviet-list disposition - it does not detail DS-33's Soviet employment, and '1956-stricken' does not establish how the hull was disposed of afterward. No asbestos content.

CORRECTION: NavSource (sourced to Turner Publishing's USS LCI volume) prints DS-34 as this hull's Soviet designation. The NHHC-published Project Hula appendix - the official transfer table compiled from U.S. Navy transfer records - assigns DS-33 to LCI(L)-587 and DS-34 to LCI(L)-590 (10 June group). DS-33 is carried as the correct designation in this record; the NavSource DS-34 appears to be a one-off transposition of the adjacent table entry.

    Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built March-April 1944 at a wartime commercial yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type and period were engine, exhaust, and muffler insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in confined machinery spaces and compartments. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler and turbine lagging pathway of steam combatants does not apply, and the asbestos load aboard a 158-foot landing craft was materially smaller than aboard steam-driven fleet units, though the confined-space exposure dynamic applies.

GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure and documented that asbestos was used in insulation throughout Navy ships - spanning this hull's entire construction and U.S. service era (1944-45) - with the 1975 policy being to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LCI(L)-587 (or Soviet designation DS-33) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched this session - opinions and RECAP dockets, query variants "LCI(L)-587", "LCI-587", "LCI(L) 587" - zero hits. No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NHHC canonical URL pattern 404; DANFS carries entries for only selected notable LCIs). The Naval Vessel Register is out of scope: NVR excludes ships and craft disposed of before 1987. The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced is generic landing-craft marketing content (asbestos-ships.com listicle) that does not name this hull - excluded by source policy.
