Specifications block: LCI-351 class, 158 ft 5.5 in length, 23 ft 3 in beam, 16 knots maximum, five single 20 mm guns, two sets of four GM diesels at 1,600 BHP driving twin variable-pitch propellers, complement 4 officers and 24 enlisted, troop capacity 6 officers and 182 enlisted. - NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - dates generally track official records but the page is not a primary registry. Key claims are corroborated independently here: builder/delivery by the shipbuilding-history build table, commissioning window by NARA SL44 log coverage, transfer date and DS-39 designation by the NHHC-published Project Hula appendix, southern France participation by the ship's own August 1944 war diary, and decommissioning by the June 1945 war diary. NavSource's 'returned to US Naval custody in 1955' claim conflicts with the NHHC appendix - see ev-05.

- Finding
- The ship's own digitized August 1944 war diary documents her part in the invasion of southern France: operating in LCI(L) Flotilla 4 (Task Force 84, TG 84.1, TU 84.1.4 on D-Day), she loaded 171 U.S. Army troops (Co. B and Co. C, 36th Engineers; 3rd Platoon, 337th M.P.E.G. Co.) at Pozzuoli on 9 August, sailed in convoy SF-2B on 12 August in convoy position 36 between LCI(L)-236 and LCI(L)-593, staged at Ajaccio Bay, Corsica, and on 15 August arrived the outer transport area off Red Beach, Cap Cavalaire, Cote d'Azur at 0650. In wave six she beached at 0852; her bow struck and exploded a submerged mine beneath the forepeak tank and boatswain's locker, disabling the port ramp. All troops were put safely ashore over the starboard ramp with no casualties; enemy artillery scored near misses. She retracted at 0911 with two wounded Army troops aboard. Damage recorded: port ramp sprung and punctured; voids A-301-V and A-302-V undersides, sides, and all piping ripped open; decking and bulkhead between voids A-201-V and A-202-V punctured with shelving, piping, and stanchions damaged; port and starboard screws and struts deranged and bent.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The ship's own war diary for 1-9 June 1945 records her final days in U.S. service: 1-8 June 'SPECIAL SERVICE - OPERATING IN ACCORDANCE WITH C.O. TRAINING PROGRAM OF U.S. NAVY DETACHMENT 3294' (the unit created specifically for Project Hula per the NHHC-published Russell monograph), and on 9 June 'OPERATING AS BEFORE. AT 1700 SHIP WAS DE-COMMISSIONED.' Signed by Donald Andrew Ullrich, LT.(JG) USNR, Commanding. This dates the U.S. Navy decommissioning to 1700 on 9 June 1945 - one day before the 10 June 1945 transfer date carried by the NHHC appendix and NavSource.

- Primary record authored aboard the ship and read directly. Decommissioning date (9 June) vs. transfer date (10 June) are reported as distinct events.

- Finding
- The appendix of this Naval Historical Center monograph lists 'LCI(L) 592 | DS-39 | 10 June | "' - the transfer date (10 June 1945) and Soviet designation DS-39 corroborate NavSource. The disposition cell is a ditto continuation of the row above (LCI(L) 591, '1956-stricken'), placing DS-39 in the 1956-stricken category - i.e., stricken from the U.S. Naval Register in 1956 while remaining in Soviet custody, not physically returned. The monograph also documents Navy Detachment 3294 as 'the unit created specifically for HULA' and that 149 ships were transferred in the program.

- CORRECTION: NavSource reports the ship was 'Returned to US Naval custody in 1955 and struck from the Naval Register.' The NHHC-published appendix lists LCI(L)-592's disposition as a ditto of '1956-stricken' - placing her among the hulls never physically returned and stricken in 1956. The Naval Marine Archive's New Jersey Shipbuilding yard page carries a third variant for this hull, 'To the USSR 1945, struck 1955.' The conflict is unresolved: the official-publication appendix is carried over the secondary pages, but no primary stricken-date record was located.

- NARA Special List 44 (by ship number) lists Navy deck logs held for LCI(L)-592 covering 4/17/1944-6/9/1945 - coverage spanning her commissioning date through decommissioning day. - Archival lead: the list establishes that logs exist in NARA holdings for that window. A catalog search of the deck-log series (Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations) surfaced no digitized per-month file unit titled for this hull - the logs are a physical-holdings lead, not digitized. Log-coverage end date (6/9/1945) coincides with the documented decommissioning day.

The August 1944 and June 1945 diaries were read image-by-image; other installments were verified at the file-unit level but not read page-by-page. No war-diary installment surfaced for January-February 1945 (likely the Mediterranean-to-Cold Bay transit window, but that gap is not explained by any located record). Muster rolls and war diaries are personnel/operational records - no material or asbestos content.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered landing craft built March-April 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type would have been limited to items such as diesel exhaust/muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and thermal insulation in confined machinery spaces. There was no steam plant - no boilers and no steam-distribution system - so the heaviest asbestos-bearing systems of steam-driven ships did not exist aboard this type.
