- Documented for this hull: LCI-351 Class Landing Craft Infantry (Large); laid down 28 March 1944 at New Jersey Shipbuilding Corp., Barber, N.J.; launched 28 April 1944; commissioned USS LCI(L)-601 on 1 May 1944, LTjg. W. Fred Sobsby in command; assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII; post-war occupation duty in the Far East, 15 to 24 October 1945; decommissioned 10 June 1946; struck from the Naval Register 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission 16 December 1947; registered in 1950 as the dredge O.V.C. 473 at Evansville, IN; registered in 1978 as the dredge Jackie Lewis, homeported at Baton Rouge, LA; renamed Donald B. (date unknown); out of documentation 1988; final disposition fate unknown. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its history block is sourced to Turner Publishing's USS LCI Vol. II (secondary literature). Milestone dates generally track official records but no government source was located to confirm the laid-down/launched dates; uboat.net carries a 25 April 1944 launch date that conflicts with NavSource's 28 April (see gaps), and the NavSource laid-down line appends '(date unknown)' internally. The page explicitly shows no photographs of this hull. Contains no asbestos or material content.

- Finding
- The official NARA wartime logbook inventory lists under 'LCI(L)-601': Date Span of Logbooks 'May 1, 1944-June 30, 1945', Number of Logbooks: 2 (read directly from the scanned page image, printed p. 346, 'Ships with Symbol and Number Designations'). The inventory establishes official archival custody of this hull's wartime deck logs spanning its commissioning month through June 1945.

- Limitations
- A finding aid entry establishes that NARA held two logbooks covering the stated span - it does not establish log content, and no deck-log text for this hull was reviewed. The listed span ends 30 June 1945 while the hull remained in service to June 1946; any post-June-1945 logs (covering the Taongi Atoll search and occupation duty) are not in this listing. Deck logs are routine operational records; their existence implies nothing about materials aboard.

- Finding
- Official Navy occupation report names this hull verbatim: 'On 21 September, LCI(L) 601 was sent from Kwajalein to [Taongi Atoll] (the northernmost of the Marshalls) for possible Allied survivors, or members of the Japanese garrison known to have been there at one time.' The craft stopped at Utirik Atoll to embark eight natives for the search party, proceeded to Pakaakku Island (Bokak), and at 0800 on 24 September put a 12-man search party ashore over the reef by rubber boat; LCI(L) 601 cruised the east side of the atoll sounding her whistle, joined at 1100 by a PBM Mariner; the U.S. flag was raised on Pakaakku at 1130; searches of Sibylla and Kamone that day and the next found no survivors, remains, or graves. This is the only specific operational event for this hull located in an official source.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific operational narrative from an official USN report; establishes deployment and activity, not material conditions aboard - no asbestos content. This event (Sept 1945) falls AFTER the deck-log span listed in NARA Special List 44 (ends 30 Jun 1945), so the two SL44-listed logbooks do not cover it. Cited via a privately mirrored Fold3 scan; the original report is a NARA RG 38 record (CinCPac & POA Serial 0395).

- Finding
- The official roster lists 'LCI(L)-601-608 | commissioned 1942-44' with no loss notation - consistent with this hull's survival through the war and transfer to the Maritime Commission in 1947. The adjacent LCI(L)-1-class specification block: displacement 387 tons full load; length 160'; beam 23'3"; speed 15.5 knots; armament 4 20mm; complement 3 officers, 21 enlisted; capacity 6 officers and 182 troops or 75 tons cargo; '2 sets G.M. diesel engines; twin variable-pitch screws, 1600 BHP' - a diesel plant, no steam machinery.

- Locator
- newjersey.html yard narrative + build table row 'LCI(L) 601'
- Finding type

- Finding
- Builder-yard context with a ship-specific row: New Jersey Shipbuilding 'was an assembly line for LCIs on Arthur Kill, in Barber, a community immediately to the east of Perth Amboy which was later absorbed into Perth Amboy and is now called Maurer'; yard management was taken over by Todd Shipyards in 1942 at the Navy's request and the yard closed after the war; site was at the foot of what is now Maurer Road. The yard's build table lists 'LCI(L) 601 | US Navy | Landing Craft | May-44 | Struck 1946' - consistent with NavSource's May 1944 commissioning and 1946 strike.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered infantry landing craft built March-May 1944 at a wartime emergency yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel amphibious craft of this period were diesel-exhaust and machinery lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, accommodation-area insulation, and brake linings on winches and the windlass. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam piping - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LCI(L)-601 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). A CourtListener API v4 opinion search on the exact designation '"LCI(L)-601"' returned zero results (2026-09-30); the RECAP docket search could not be completed this session (fleet pacing throttle) and is logged as blocked, not as a negative result. General web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no 'asbestos aboard' claims beyond generic landing-craft marketing content, which is excluded by source policy.
