Special List 44 (by ship number) lists Navy deck logs held by NARA for LCI(L)-608 covering 5/11/1944-6/30/1945 (2 logbooks) - logbook coverage running from her commissioning date through mid-1945 (log-coverage dates, not commissioning evidence). Independently corroborated against the full SL44 book scan (printed p. 346, ACPL mirror display page 372): 'LCI(L)-608 May 11, 1944-June 30, 1945 - 2 logbooks'.

    Limitations
Archival lead: the list establishes that logs exist in NARA holdings for that window. A search-within of the digitized WWII deck-log series (catalog NAID 594258) returned zero file units under name forms 'LCI(L) 608' / 'LCI(L)-608', so these logs were not located online - physical holdings at Archives II, College Park only. SL44 reflects the first accession; post-6/30/1945 logs (covering her Sep-Dec 1945 occupation/China service) are not in the listed span. No asbestos content - deck logs are operational/personnel records.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation citing Turner Publishing's LCI volume, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track official sources and the commissioning date is consistent with the NARA SL44 log-coverage start, but no primary construction record was pulled for this hull. Contains no asbestos content. No campaign table is printed for this hull (unlike sister pages) - her specific landing operations are unitemized on the secondary record.

Adds ship-specific operational detail: on 14 February 1945 LCI(L)-608, Lt.(jg) D. S. Bays, USNR commanding, sailed with convoy GI 11 out of Humboldt Bay (Hollandia) - a mixed Navy/merchant convoy including USS Dobbin, USS Banner, USS Torrance, and USS Acubens.

    Finding
Digitized operational records indexing this hull: the LCI(L) Flotilla 15 war diary for September 1944-April 1945 - the flotilla in which sister hulls LCI(L)-607 and LCI(L)-609 served (their NavSource pages show Flotilla Fifteen/Group Forty-Three) - is digitized and its extracted text matches a search for 'LCI(L) 608'. Four additional digitized war diaries (USS Briareus Feb-Aug 1944; NOB Key West, COM Chesapeake Group ESF, and COMPASEAFRON for June 1944) also surface as text matches - consistent with an East Coast fitting-out/shakedown window before Pacific deployment.

    Limitations
Class design documentation, not a hull record - the booklet describes the LCI(L)-351 design (LCI(L)-608 was built to it at a different yard), and its plate list does not expose a material-by-material insulation schedule in the portion reviewed. Finding
A diesel-powered landing craft built April-May 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and valve packing in engine and piping systems, electrical insulation on wiring and in control panels, and thermal insulation in the confined machinery spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply - but a 28-man crew plus up to 188 embarked troops lived and worked inside a small welded-steel hull whose machinery spaces concentrated whatever insulating and sealing materials were used.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos aboard ships - thermal insulation was the Navy's major shipboard asbestos use, and per the Navy all ships contained some asbestos in components such as clutches and electric cables - and that substitution of asbestos-free insulation materials did not occur until the 1970s (product specifications changed 1973; some ships delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978). This hull's entire construction and service window (1944-47) falls inside the documented use era.
