- sl-44-ship-number.pdf, p. 26, row 'LCI(L)-618 5/27/1944 6/30/1945' (line 1257 of pdftotext -layout extraction); LC(FF)/LCI(L)(FF) jacket section has no 618 row
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official NARA inventory of Navy logbooks lists deck logs for 'LCI(L)-618' covering 5/27/1944 through 6/30/1945 (PDF page 26 of the by-ship-number list) - under the plain LCI(L) designation; SL44's separate LC(FF)/LCI(L)(FF) jacket section exists (e.g., LC(FF)-423, -426, -793; LCI(L)(FF)-367-370, -399, -423-427, -484-486, -503-504, -1031, -1079-1083) but contains no 618 entry. The coverage start date equals her commissioning date (27 May 1944 per NavSource/uboat.net). This is the wartime Navy's own log inventory establishing in-scope service for this hull.

- Limitations
- Log coverage dates are not commissioning/decommissioning dates - they document that logs exist and the coverage window. The inventoried coverage ENDS 6/30/1945, before V-J Day, her documented 12 September-9 December 1945 Far East occupation service, her return transit, and her May 1946 decommissioning - yet the NavSource-published log excerpts (ev-03) run to 16 March 1946, so later log material demonstrably existed; where the post-June-1945 jackets reside relative to the SL44 listing is unexplained. The logs themselves are not digitized (NARA's digitized deck-log list contains no LCI hulls); they are RG 24 textual records at Archives II, College Park. Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- A first-person account by a member of the Flotilla 22 staff documents this hull's flagship role: the flotilla's 36-ship roster is listed (62, 63, 328, 333-335, 357-360, 433-436, 443-446, 518, 519, 614-619, 688-690, 776, 777, 985-987, 1032, 1033 in three groups - 64, 65, 66); 'Flotilla 22 Staff, for most of WWII was billeted aboard the USS LCI 618(FF)'; in late September 1944 'the Flag was transferred from the 433 to the 618. It was a new ship just out from the states and it had all the latest equipment and it was designed to be a Flag Ship. It had the latest Radar and Radio equipment and the troop compartments were all offices. In fact I had two radio "shacks", eight radiomen and six radarmen.' Narrated operations include: Lingayen Gulf (arrived 9 January 1945, smoke-making duties); the 28 January up-coast run on LCI-519 to evacuate Mrs. Osmena's family; the 21 February move to Subic; the 1 March Manila Bay convoy with Commander Flotilla 22 in 618 as SOPA ('the first merchant shipping in Manila Bay since 1941'); 'twenty-two' Philippine landings including Legaspi 1 April, Parang Mindanao 17 April (24th Infantry Division), Zamboanga 11 May, Basilan 13 May; occupation transit via Okinawa to Jinsen Korea through a typhoon (arrived 21 September); Taku Bar and the run '36 miles up the river to the city of Tientsin'; Commander Byrd transferred to USS Seminole (AK-104) 10 October and the flag shifted to LCI(L)-690 under Commander Philip Porter; the flotilla departed for the States in December, decommissioning January 1946. Flotilla commanders named: Commander James McD Smith (first, on LCI-433), Commander Marion M. Byrd/'Byrde' (on 618), Commander Philip Porter (on 690).

- A veteran memoir transcribed for the association - rich but recollection-grade: it contains typos and small inconsistencies (e.g., 'Attape' for Aitape, 'Jensen' for Jinsen, 'Byrde' vs NavSource's 'Byrd'; it dates the flag transfer to 'late September' while the log shows staff embarking 23 September). The 'designed to be a Flag Ship' phrasing leaves whether the flagship conversion was done at the builder's yard or before deployment undocumented. Contains no asbestos content.

Builder, build dates, and decommissioning corroborate NavSource. - Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The HyperWar landing-craft roster lists this hull inside the unannotated range row 'LCI(L)-610-664, 1942-44' (the printed row reads '610-6664', an evident transcription typo for 610-664) - i.e., no loss, lend-lease, or conversion note (contrast 'LCI(L)-600 ... 12 Jan 45' lost and the lend-lease USSR rows). The LC(FF) section documents the type: 'Landing Craft, Flotilla Flagships,' 387 t., 160', 23'3" beam, 15.5 kts, 4x20mm, complement 3 officers + 21 enlisted, 8 GM diesel engines (4 per shaft) twin variable-pitch screws, 'Converted from Landing Craft, Infantry (Large) - LCI(L) to carry flag officers and crew' - but the LC(FF) roster rows (367-370, 399, 423-427, 484-486, 503-504, 531-533, 535-536, 569, 571-572, 575, 627-628, 656-657, 679, 775, 782-783, 786, 788-793, 988, 994-995, 998, 1031, 1079-1083) do NOT include 618, despite NavSource and uboat.net documenting her redesignation. The LCI(L)-351 class block documents the type: 385 t. full load, 160'4", 23'3" beam, 15.5 kts, 5x20mm, complement 4 officers + 25 enlisted, capacity 9 officers + 200 enlisted or 75 t. cargo, 2 sets GM diesels, twin variable-pitch screws, 1,600 BHP.

- HyperWar is a transcription/compilation host; roster rows are bare range listings and the class blocks describe types, not this hull. The LC(FF) roster's omission of 618 is a documented compilation conflict (see ev-12) - the roster is visibly incomplete in places and an omission is not proof the redesignation did not occur. Class-block figures differ from NavSource's hull-specific block (385 t / 160'4" / 25 enlisted / 1,600 BHP vs 236-419 t / 158'5.5" / 24 enlisted / 2,320 shp) - spec variance noted in gaps. - Finding
- The official Seventh Amphibious Force administrative history's annex independently corroborates the operational framework this hull's log records: its operations table lists 'LINGAYEN, LUZON | CTF 78 Op. Plan (103-44)' dated 1-9-45; 'LEGASPI (BICOL), LUZON | CTF 78 Op. Plan (8-45) CTG 78.4 ComLCIFlot 7 Op. Plan (3-45)' dated 4-1-45 - the same LCI Flotilla 7 Operations Plan 3-45 that LCI(L)-618's own log says she sailed under departing Subic 28 March; and 'MALABANG (PARANG) MINDANAO | CTF 78 Op Plan (9-45) CTG 78.2 Op. Plan (4-45)' dated 4-17-45, matching her 17 April Polloc Harbor/Illana Bay landing and NavSource's credited Mindanao campaign window. The narrative volume records that the Seventh Amphibious Force grew threefold August-November 1944 'by the addition of ... four LCI Flotillas' - the formation window in which the Talbert narrative dates Flotilla 22's August 1944 establishment.

- Finding
- The yard delivery table lists 'LCI(L) | 618 | US Navy | Landing Craft | May-44 | Struck 1946' - corroborating a May 1944 delivery (consistent with the 27 May 1944 commissioning) while asserting a 1946 striking that NavSource gives as 'date unknown.' The page's yard history describes New Jersey Shipbuilding as 'an assembly line for LCIs on Arthur Kill, in Barber' whose 'management was taken over by Todd Shipyards in 1942, at the Navy's request,' closing after the war. Neighbor context: the same table shows LCI(L)-600 'Sunk 1945', 616/617 'To China 1946', 615 'Target at Bikini', 606 'To Argentina 1948', and most other neighbors 'Struck 1946' - 618's 'Struck 1946' row is the modal disposition for the block.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered landing craft built April-May 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a craft of this type and period were diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch brake linings. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Documented asbestos-era events aboard this specific hull: construction at New Jersey Shipbuilding (Barber, NJ); the flotilla-flagship conversion that turned her troop compartments into offices and added radar/radio spaces (documented as existing by September 1944, conversion yard and work package undocumented); a Hollandia drydocking 17-18 December 1944; repair of 18 February 1945 LSM-51 collision damage (frame 81 starboard, No. 5 gun shield; repair location undocumented); and a San Diego drydocking 1-16 March 1946. No law-firm or marketing hull-specific content naming this hull surfaced (the LCI-type listicle class asserts asbestos on Navy ships generically - excluded by source policy; none names this hull). No crew memorial inscription naming hull 618 appears in the Amphibious Forces Memorial Museum's donor list.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference is consistent with retained era materials during service, and the undigitized RG 24 deck logs (5/27/1944-6/30/1945 inventoried) plus the ODU Heflin & Williams ship-data collection (hull-range coverage including this hull) are open archival leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- CORRECTION: '618' collisions are real and materially different hulls. NARA Special List 44 carries log jackets for LST-618 (6/3/1944-12/31/1945), PC-618 (9/7/1942-12/31/1945, 'see PC-617, 1942-45'), PT-618 (9/24/1945-2/4/1946), and YP-618 (4/9/1945-12/31/1945). The 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization lists YF-618 and YP-618. NARA's digitized deck-log list contains 'Weatherford (EPC/PC-618)' - the ex-PC-618 under her later designation - and 'Thomas Jefferson (SSBN/SSN-618)'. Any attribution to a bare '618' absent the LCI qualifier is a hull-number collision, not this vessel. DESIGNATION NOTE: this hull's LC(FF) status is also imperfectly uniform across sources - NavSource titles her 'USS LC(FF)-618' with redesignation 'in 1944' and uboat.net dates it 31 December 1944, but SL44 carries her log jacket under plain 'LCI(L)-618' (the LC(FF) jacket section has no 618 row), the HyperWar LC(FF) roster omits her entirely, and the published log excerpts style her 'LCI(L) 618' throughout - including entries after the asserted reclassification date.

- Limitations
- Collision-disambiguation and designation-hygiene finding only. The LC(FF) discrepancy is carried at face value, not resolved: the flagship role is well documented by the Talbert narrative and the staff-embarkation log entries, but the formal redesignation's date and its reflection (or non-reflection) in official rosters is unresolved. Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- Open archival paths attach to this hull: (a) ODU holds the Heflin & Williams ship-data file collection whose Volume 02 is cataloged for hulls LCI(L)-351 through LCI(L)-1098 - a range including this hull - with files organized by ship class, hull designation, and hull number; (b) the undigitized NARA RG 24 deck logs (inventoried coverage 5/27/1944-6/30/1945 per Special List 44, with log material demonstrably extending to 16 March 1946 via the published transcription); and (c) the published log excerpts and Flotilla 22 memoir already supply more of this hull's operational record than survives for most LCIs - the residual archival value is the complete logs (daily positions, materials/maintenance entries, full personnel roster) behind the excerpts.

- N/A - record-location leads
- Limitations
- Archival leads only. The ODU volume is cataloged for the 351-1098 range but the item-level entry carries 'LCI(L)-453' as its terminating hull, suggesting the online listing may cover only a segment of the volume - whether an LCI(L)-618 file actually exists inside is unverified; undigitized, open to researchers per the finding aid. Deck-log SL44 coverage ends 6/30/1945 while the published excerpts run to March 1946 - the post-June-1945 jackets' archival location is unresolved. No asbestos content.
